I travel a lot for work; in 30 years I’ve stayed in everything you can imagine; Four Seasons in Italy, Maui resorts, villas in the Caribbean, hammocks in Mexico. This was perfect to make our vacation whatever we wanted. The 1 review about the rundown community was misleading. This is the DR, not Florida. Please, if that’s what you expect, go there and don’t give Americans more of a bad reputation than we already have. Yes, you'll see some vacant buildings, quaint restaurants and beautiful homes. The DR is a developing country, and if you want to be a good citizen of our World, show some respect for that. There are poor areas (I didn’t really see that), but I’ve seen much, much worse in Mexico, Dominica, St. Thomas, and Barbados. It’s just… different. The owner was excellent, the house is nicer than the pics. "Beachfront" means 1 step from the backyard to the beach; quiet, not deserted. 2 min. walk to slightly more populated beach; little restaurants, thatched-roof palapas, great swimming. Great for kids, swim in the easily identified white-sand areas (bring a mask/snorkel and you’ll easily identify where coral and sea urchins are further out). The gated community is safe, several English-speaking restaurants/shops. You could spend your entire time without leaving, but if that’s your plan… go to Florida, please. We explored every day. If you haven’t traveled much outside your country, but want to experience something idyllic, slightly exotic, and relatively quiet, this may be a good place to start. Just use your head and do some research. And if you have traveled, enjoy. A big smile and “Hola” goes a long way. A little Spanish helps tremendously. Mine was rusty, but when seeking directions in Puerto Plata, a shop owner walked us two blocks to the store I was looking for, and left me with a warm smile and a handshake. When was the last time that happened to you in the States?Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We enjoyed our 10 day vacation in Costambar. The house is quite large and has a gorgeous view. Two of the bedrooms face east so you can watch the sunrise from your bedroom window! The house is very secure, neighbors friendly and helpful, the manager and house staff is very attentive. Inside the community there are several restaurants, small market, golf course, spa, and beautiful beach. You wouldn't need to venture outside of the community if he didn't want to. If you do, however, Puerto Plata is a busy little community filled with small time entrepreneurs. Your adventures can consist of lots of day trips that will provide you with history (Columbus’ first settlement) and social activities (casino and dancing). Note: brush up on your Spanish or download a translation app to make communication easier during your stay.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

As described with excellent owner communication. Greeted by local property manager who checked in several times during the week. Cleaning service twice during week kept things clean with fresh towels. Easy to get around the small town/village by foot. Taxis readily available for further day trips. Local market with delivery. Good restaurants within walking. Comfortable home for four looking for R&R. Great that you were on the beach for breezes, easy access to public beach. Would recommend for couples...may need a car with teenagers to go to places. Family oriented beach would be fine for children.Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Hello Rita You said it all! We strive to provide a level of service that allows our clients to instantly feel relaxed and secure in our home. Quaint is a perfect description for our seaside village. Vacationing in Costambar is for people who are interested in an affordable, low keyed beach vacation away from the hassle that is associated with touristy hotel strips. Although costambar offers all of the amenities one needs for a great vacation, I am happy that you took advantage of the taxi service and enjoyed the beautiful areas of the DR that we recommended.

We were a little unsure about renting outside an all-inclusive. But we wanted to find a place that wasn't touristy. The owner gave us a lot of information about Costambar, and what the neighborhood had to offer. He had the house manager meet us when we arrived. That put us at ease right away. The house itself was beautiful, brightly painted, right on the water. It looked just like the pictures, was very comfortable and the ocean views were great. The swimming and sun bathing beach was just a short walk from the house, and we rented lounge chairs for a couple dollars a day. The ocean is gentle and the beach was ideal for our kids. There's a small but well stocked local super market called Jenny's, so we packed lunches a few days. But the restaurants on the beach were good, and we ended up eating at them quite a few times. The golf club that visitors have access to, Los Mangos, was a little touch of luxury when we wanted to sit around the pool for a change of pace. The house was wonderful, the beach was easy-going, and it was just how we wanted to spend our vacation.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: I am so happy that you felt so at home in my house and that you enjoyed the relaxed feel of Costambar. We hope that you return soon.

A well-kept house in one of the few DR resorts not taken over by all-inclusive resorts. The rental was easy to arrange and the owner's agent and cleaning staff did just what was needed. Would recommend it to anyone who wants an independent holiday in by the sea and in easy reach of Puerto Plata.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you JF for your comments and I am so happy that you enjoyed my house and its beautiful views. You are correct, vacationing in my house in Costambar, provides all the amenities that an all-inclusive resort has with much better food and accommodations for the same or less cost. The Los Mangos Country Club in Costambar has a swimming pool, gym, wellness center and golf course. There are many restaurants within walking distance from my house which are inexpensive and very good. Within a 15 minute drive there are even more excellent restaurants. Of course our beach is beautiful and not so crowded that you have to fight for a comfortable area to relax in.

Our group consisted of 2 adult couples. Our vacation in Costambar was perfect, very relaxing. The Villa we stayed in was everything it was said to be, great location, very clean and plenty of room. Costambar has lots of good, inexpensive restaurants within walking distance and on the beach. The main supermarket has what you need if you choose to cook at home, which we did on a few nights. The people of Dominican Republic are very friendly. The manager and the maid service that we had were very thorough and kept things up to par. Although we spent most of our time on the beautiful beach, a nice amenity was the ability to use the pool the gym and the golf course at the Los Mangos Country club which is about a 15 minute walk from the house. This was a great vacation spot and not only would I recommend this to my family and friends but I will be back. Thanks for everything.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

The casa is extremely comfortable and spacious, the surroundings lush and beautiful, and the owners are very helpful in every way. There is nothing like sitting on the front patio and watching the ocean. Short short walk to the part of the beach with quaint restaurant bars. The Los Mangos country club and pool is also a luxurious spot to be able to visit. And, there are lots of interesting spots to visit a short drive away. Costambar itself is a unique spot, a community of expats within the Dominican Republic.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We are a 5-adult family (grown kids) who vacation together each winter. We'd not known anything about the Dominican Republic in general or Costambar in particular. We took a chance and really struck it rich. The house is as described, affordable, clean, large, comfortable, etc. But in addition, there is Allen, the owner, who was wonderful help in planning our trip, making recommendations for local restaurants that were all teriffic! Costambar is an unusual place, very convenient to surrounding Puerto Plata and environs, but also a wonderful community on its own. The local beach is absolutely beautiful, and much less crowded than nearby Sosua or Cabarete. Wonderful warm water, soft sand, lots of shallow water for little ones, etc. We managed just fine without a rental car, either walking to many places in Costambar, or getting transport from the locally-regulated Costambar taxi stand for longer trips. The only caveat, which the owner apprised us of from the start, is that this is a developing country, with it's share of "infrastructure issues". But it wasn't a problem for us a bit.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, families with young children.

My wife and I took my daughter, her husband and two grandchildren to Costambar and rented this perfect Villa. The Villa is as described, on the ocean, with fantastic views of the ocean. While sitting on the porch or on lounge chairs in the backyard you are looking directly at the ocean. Although the house is steps from the beach the main beach area is a short walk. We found this to be a perfect balance because we were away from the bustle of the main beach. The owners were so helpful when booking and their staff were efficient and so nice. the house is comfortable and is as described. We were six persons but we never felt that we were on top of each other because the house has 4 bathrooms and 3 bedrooms with large living areas. The cost is less than the all inclusive hotels and we dined at the recommended restaurants which were all excellent. I recommend this for anyone looking for a restful, fun and affordable vacation.......the country is a bit funky which really make it a fun place to vacation.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children.
