Spend your winter on the Emerald Coast of the Yucatan in the quaint fishing village of Chelem. Large secure house on a private shaded lot a few blocks from the beach. Awake to the singing of birds residing in the many trees surrounding the property.

This is real Mexico where you can buy a fish dinner for less than $6. Chelem's flamingo reserve can be seen by contracting with local fishermen who will give you a tour for around $10 US. Locals are also more than happy to take you on a crabbing expedition(in season) or for a small fishing adventure.
Local families sell their delicious 'pay de coco'(coconut pie) & 'cremitas' (coconut pudding) along the main street from rustic little stands to augment their income. Several computers in Alex Super to keep in touch with folks back home through internet. Walk to typical market open every day.
The lively tourist town of Progreso is just 10 minutes away if you need more action and stores. Progreso has a lovely malecon and the world's largest pier. There is a typical market with food and fish as well as handicrafts. Don't miss the beautiful mint green municipal palace in Progreso.
Transportation right outside the house can take you to anywhere in the Yucatan or Mexico without the added expense of a rental car. Merida, a gorgeous colonial city, is just about 40 minutes away... where you can visit one of the largest typical markets in Mexico or attend many cultural events for a few dollars... symphonies, ballets, and other artistic and musical events.
Don't miss 'Merida en Domingo'...a fantastic Sunday event. Archeological sites and the infamous underground cenotes dot the local landscape. However, if you really only need to 'chill out' , swing away in a hammock with a good book on the porch or out back and walk across the street to one of the most famous restaurants on the coast... Costa Azul.
Rent a house for a month on the Emerald Coast for what you would pay for a week on the Riviera Maya. Feel like a respected visitor... not a gouged tourist.
