This house is in the historic center of San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas. San Cristóbal is called a "colonial" city because it was founded in 1526 is still has important architecture from the 16th Century. It is also a National Monument city. San Cristóbal is also the central town for the Mayan indigenous communities of Chiapas, with a rich, millenarian culture, particularly attractive for those who enjoy weaving, high ritual, and agrarian society -- now of course in a process of modernization, and no less interesting for that.

The house: we call it a "cottage" because it integrates a frankly lavish garden into a comfortable and well-appointed house, which is not flashy but manages to be stately. There's quite a good library to consult. There is working fireplace in the living room -- the oldest part of the house and a traditional adobe structure, now with skylights and all the amenities. Across the patio is the spacious kitchen-dining room, with knock-out Puebla tiling and a high ceiling. The bedroom is situated in the garden. You can hear the fountain. (There is a comfortable sofa-bed, with a double-sized mattress. There is a bath off the master bedroom and another full bath off the living room (sala).

There is a gardener-handyman and a housekeeper for several hours every day.

This is a perfect staging ground for exploring an exquisite city and surrounding mountainous country-side. San Cristóbal and environs is now wonderfully set up to accommodate tourists without being overdone. There are museums, guides, and many good restaurants. We are close to important Mayan sites, including Palenque. The Lacandon Jungle is not far, nor is the Usumacinta River (where there is rafting, etc.)
