I stayed here for six days in late February while visiting my daughter. The location is amazing and right across the street is the bus stop. I rode the #6 bus every morning on my way to downtown San Francisco to spend the day with my daugter. The bus ride itself is fun because it takes you on colorful Haight Street and the houses are fun to see. Almost every morning I'd walk the few blocks down to Irving Street. You could spend your entire day there if you wanted, everything you need is there. I wish I could remember the name of the coffee shop that had these awsome pastries. If you just follow the morning crowd, you'll find the place I'm sure. By the way, if you're not used to walking up San Francisco hills, you can always take the #6 bus back up 9th Street. I had too many pastries so I always walked. =) Sally was friendly and accomodating. The space was ready for me when I arrived and was clean and well stocked. The bed is firm but comfortable. I'm from the Seattle area so San Francisco seemed warm to me for winter, but there were plenty of extra blankets in the armoir if you're chilly. I would recommend this rental to anyone who is traveling alone and wants to feel safe in the big city. This is the kind of place you can feel comfortable sending someone you love to and not have to worry about them. I stayed for six nights. It felt like a short weekend though because there's so much to do and see in San Francisco. Bear in mind, some of those hills aren't for the timid, bring your sturdy walking shoes and extra socks. You'll rarely see an overweight person in the city--once you start walking around, you'll know why. You won't need a car during your visit unless there's a reason you can't walk. The public transportation in San Francisco is amazing. The parking stinks so you may as well save yourself the price of the car rental. Plus you'll feel healthier from all the walking. The place looked just like the photos, although the garden area is much nicer in person. The only drawback I can come up is the cell phone reception inside the space wasn't great. I had to stand by the door to get reception. It could be my phone, or my phone provider, (Verizon), however It wasn't much of an inconvenience at all. I would have no qualms recommending this rental to anyone visiting the area. Sally is friendly but unobtrusive. Next time I'm in the city, I know where I'm staying.Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car.

I sent my husband to San Francisco for 5 days as a Christmas gift, to watch his beloved 49ers play one of their final seasons in Candlestick Park. I did a LOT of research for hotel rooms & came across VRBO & this listing. What a steal! Sally was very nice & prompt with her replies to my many, many questions. He said the neighborhood was very clean, very quiet, very nice. He was told by some locals that the neighborhood was "boring" compared to others, but he thought there was plenty to do. There was every kind of cuisine you could want, sports bars, bakeries, etc, just a couple of blocks away. The room itself was very small, but how much room does one really need when you're a tourist? He said it was very clean & quiet. He didn't meet the hostess, Sally, but he said her husband was very nice. He was JUST at the perfect height for the bed to be comfortable, but if you're taller than 6 ft, you won't fit in the bed. The ONLY negative & the reason there is 4 stars rather than 5, is that there was no heat. We live in Texas & he was freezing pretty much the entire time. They provided him with plenty of blankets, but even with 6-7 blankets & wearing several layers, he was unable to get the chill out of his bones. He said there appeared to be a heating unit in the bathroom, but he was unable to get it to work. I sent him with some warm house slippers, and I'd encourage everyone to do that. He said that really helped. I did not think to ask if there would be heat, as it's just something I assumed they would have. Therefore, I thought sending him in late December, as long as he had plenty of clothes for when he was outside, would be fine, because he could come back to the room & be nice & cozy at night. Still, he was told that finding a place in a safe neighborhood for the price it's at, is almost unheard of. I would DEF recommend this place again. Just not in a colder month. I would also recommend bringing a laptop, or something else to watch movies on. He was pretty worn out at night, after walking so much, and he was able to watch movies with their WiFi connection.Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

As a woman traveling alone to San Francisco and unfamiliar with the city, I was a little nervous about choosing a place to stay. This was place was perfect! It was in a beautiful neighborhood that felt safe. It was within walking distance of Golden Gate Park and a busy strip for shopping and eating. The room was clean and simple, but contained everything I needed for a short stay (wifi, utensils, microwave, etc). The owner was extremely kind, responsive and flexible with my check-in and check-out times since there was not another person staying after my stay. I would definitely recommend and I would stay there again if I travel to San Francisco alone again.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

When you pass through the front gate, you’re welcomed by a beautiful garden, and then by your gracious host, Sally. The guest house is tidy, clean, and comfortable, and appears the same as in the photos. While small, it’s fully self-contained. It’s also convenient: there’s a bus stop (#6) right across the street, which I took advantage of every day of my stay. While waiting for the bus, you can catch a glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance! The Twin Peaks are visible in the other direction. The neighbourhood is calm and feels quite safe. On nearby Irving Street, there are plenty of restaurants, shops, banks and cafes. All this for a more reasonable price than a hotel room. Recommended, especially for the lone female traveller.Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

For the past year, I have reserved this guest room once a month. Sally is a wonderful hostess! With each visit, I find the small studio clean and stocked with enough fresh ground coffee to get me through the next morning. The garden to the guest house transitions you into the quiet retreat and gives a relaxing sense of arrival. Every once in a while, I can faintly hear the pleasing sounds of musical instruments from talented students who are taking lessons from Sally in the main house. The bus stops just outside of the guest house at the corner which is ultra convenient. The neighborhood is nice and has great views due to its location up on the hill. All in all, it is a very comfortable and pleasing atmosphere for one person to stay.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

I enjoyed my stay immensely. The owner of the home was very responsive and provided a great deal of information regarding the house and the city that made my stay truly wonderful. It is a small space but perfect for one person, as advertised. It is located in a quaint area of San Francisco near markets and shops with very easy access. The property was clean and well maintained. I had a rental car but it is located near public transportation - literally across the street. My only concern was not being knowledgeable about the city and its parking rules. Make sure you ask about that! Otherwise, my trip was so nice I didn't want to return home!Recommended for: Tourists without a car.

I was weary & new about booking anything from this website, as a woman traveling by myself. But, after reading reviews, I took the plunge, & felt secure. When I arrived, I was greeted by Sally, and she is the best, friendliest hostess possible. This garden retreat is so safe and full of zen in what turned out to be my favorite neighborhood of all in SF. This was the perfect place for me, charming, and safe. If I did not have friends to stay with for the next few weeks, I would have loved to extend my stay. Parking is a chore in SF, but everything was convenient, nearby, and just overall awesome. Don't miss the Golden Gate park nearby, Ocean Beach, & OMG, San Tung's famous chinese chicken wings. Thanks again to Sally, this was the best of the best!!!Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Dear Gayle: Thank you so much for the kind words! We enjoyed your stay and are glad that you had a great time in SF. Sally

The studio at the Little Red House is cozy, comfortable, clean and quiet. It is perfect for one person on vacation or on business. There is a refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker that work very well but it is only 6 blocks from Irving Street where there are many different restaurants--Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Indian, American, and Organic, so eating out is an easy option. Golden Gate park is within walking distance and there is easy public transport elsewhere. Sally, the hostess, is a wonderfully warm person.Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing.
Owner response: All our guests are our family that day. We enjoy meeting people from around the world; it seems that the world has come to us. Thank you for your kind words. Sally

On a recent vacation to San Francisco, I stayed at this sweet little gem. It was charming, and very clean, and the size was perfectly cozy for one person. With the bustling 9th and Irving Street activity a short walking distance away, and the #6 bus line directly across the street, it was easy to get around and explore the city, but set off enough in a quiet, safe neighborhood where I could return at the end of the day and catch some peace and quiet. I would definitely stay here again, without a doubt!Recommended for: Age 55+, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, sightseeing.
Owner response: Dear Eileen: Thank you so much for your kind words! You were a wonderful guest and we look forward to seeing you again. Sally and Family.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1991
About the owner: I(Sally) am a classical pianist living in San Francisco with my husband(Greg) and my teenager son. We also have a German Shepherd dog that was adopted two years ago. As a graduate of the Conservatory, our tenant will hear practices from myself on the piano and my son on the cello frequently. For recent years have I devoted myself to Tzu Chi Foundation, an international charitable organization.
Why the Owner Chose Sunset:
A beautiful Redwood tree attracted my attention at the first sight. This charming cottage was built in 1907. We have named it 'the Little Red House in San Francisco'.
