Our house is just a short walk from the village of La Chapelle Aubareil, which lies between the lovely Vézère valley and the heart of the Dordogne valley. We are about 12 kms from Sarlat, a perfectly restored medieval town and a delight to wander around the narrow medieval streets with foie gras shops and restaurants galore. The market is every Saturday and Wednesday and a truly magnificent spectacle.
This is a peaceful place, in countryside that is constantly changing. In Spring, the hills are a mass of wild flowers and in Autumn, the woods hang tawny against the blue distance. The Vézère river is strung with Renaissance castles from Condat to the pleasant riverside town of Le Bugue. A succession of extraordinary prehistoric caves can be seen from Les Eyzies to Montignac and under sun bleached awnings, village market stalls are piled high with seasonal goodies: apricots or tomatoes, five different kinds of lettuce and kilos of cherries.
The cottage is on one side of our house and quite private and independent. It is comfortably furnished and has its own walled garden leading down to the pool and a terrace with garden furniture and a barbeque.
The ground floor has a large kitchen with a traditional cantou fireplace, equipped with everything; oven and hob, fridge, washing machine and dryer, juicers, kettle, coffee maker and toaster, microwave and ironing facilities. The salon has satellite television (Sky, BBC, ITV, CNN, etc and French channnels) and a DVD, books and general local information including maps. There is electric heating if needed.
Upstairs is a mezzanine double bedroom with wardrobe and cupboards. There is also a bathroom with shower, wash basin and wc. A hairdryer is provided.
The Area
There are tennis courts in the village, endless places to walk, riding stables close by and a golf course 15 kms from here. The Vézère and Dordogne rivers are well known for good fishing and you can also hire canoes.
La Chapelle has a good general store where you can get most things and within a short drive, is the pretty village of St Geniès. Here you will find a very comprehensively stocked general store (normally open from 9am to 7pm), an excellent butcher, a petrol station and garage, a baker and patisserie, a rather good café restaurant serving great value local food, a post office, dentist, doctor, a hairdresser and a small bar. A stroll around this delightful little place will reveal a wealth of glowing detail: a 12th century chapel replete with original frescos, apparently as fresh as the day they were made, the 400 year old stone-roofed church with its fairytale turrets, ducks and geese enjoying the freedom of the little village pond. Every Sunday morning, there is a thriving market where you can buy anything from a pair of shoes to a box of Turkish delight, freshly made doughnuts to goose neck stuffed with foie gras.
There are other villages we know of that have an undeniable charm, like Fanlac and St Léon de Vézère. Gardners would enjoy the spectacular gardens at Erignac, the garden at Marqueyssac or the Jardins de l'Imaginaire at Terrasson. On the other side of Sarlat, an arcadian stretch of the Dordogne river, takes you Domme standing high above the river and on to Beynac, its ancient village houses huddled beneath the feudal castle looming above.
We will be happy to recommend restaurants, where you can try local dishes like foie gras or duck breast with truffles. The wines of Monbazillac and Bergerac, Cahors and Bordeaux are all easily available and many of the vineyards themselves are within a reasonable drive.
