Accommodations: Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-6)
Keywords: Lakefront Cottage
We invite you to come stay at your own private cottage and enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of Lake Superior and Au Train Island. It's the perfect place for a family vacation, a getaway for two, or a small group.
Nestled on the shore in Shelter Bay with 175 feet of private lake frontage, relax and unwind in a peaceful, quiet setting. Sit on the front porch with your favorite book, watch the birds as they come to the feeders and listen to the sound of the waves.
You'll be sure to get a glimpse of an eagle gliding along the shore. If the weather isn't to your liking, grab your book and head to the screened/glassed-in gazebo by the lake. This picturesque bay with its view of moored boats and countless sea gulls, provides a perfect backdrop for a true vacation.
You're sure to enjoy the vibrant fall colors provided by Mother Nature, as the cottage sits on the edge of the Hiawatha National Forest.
This clean, tastefully decorated cottage comes with a fully-equipped kitchen and everything needed to make your stay as comfortable as being at home. The open kitchen, dining, and living area have breathtaking views of Lake Superior. The master bedroom has a queen-size bed and a small balcony for you to enjoy. The other bedroom has a queen-size bed and a set of large bunk beds.
Linens are provided but you do need to bring your own bath towels and washcloths. Smoking is NOT permitted inside the cottage and pets are sometimes allowed if approved in advance, although there is an additional fee. Unfortunately the cottage is not handicapped accessible.
Take a walk just a half mile to Deer Lake, a beautiful inland lake with excellent swimming and picnic facilities. Or take a swim out to and dive off of Seagull Rock directly in front of the cottage or put your kayak in right there also.
Au Train, six miles east, features one of the most pristine white sand beaches on the south shore of Lake Superior and is a favorite swimming and canoeing spot. Nearby you can find area waterfalls, Grand Island Recreation Area Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Seney Wildlife Refuge, US Forest Service Songbird Trail, and the Alger Underwater Preserve.
Once the sun goes down, head for the fire pit for some smores. Or if you've had enough fresh air for the day and decide to call it a night, relax as you let the sound of the waves lull you to a peaceful nights sleep. Truly a perfect four seasons vacation place for all to enjoy!

Why the Owner Chose Au Train

We enjoyed many years here when our children were growing up, but now it's times to let others enjoy it as well. We can assist you in deciding what you want to do with your time, as we know the area very well.
The Unique Benefits of this Cottage
Situated half way between Marquette and Munising, it's a perfect location for enjoying all that Alger and Marquette Counties have to offer. And since we live directly across the street from the cottage, we're available to make sure you have a pleasant stay.

Beautiful Fall Get Away

My wife and I stayed for three nights in early October. The cabin was very cozy and inviting. My wife loved to curl up on the coach in the evenings to read a book or look at her iPad. Everything was clean and well taken care of. We spent all our day times driving and hiking to the various waterfalls in the area to take pictures. We were pleasantly surprised how beautiful the waterfalls were. It was really neat having the lake just a few feet from the cabin. Got some great sunrise pictures. I remember laying in bed one morning thinking sleeping in would be nice, but then I noticed the brilliant red and orange glow coming from the window. No more sleep for me. I had to go out to the beach and catch the sunrise. We enjoyed out stay immensely and didn't want to go back home. We hope to come back again when we get the opportunity.

Our first visit, but not our last! We spent two weeks at the cottage and it was perfect. Sitting on the porch, drinking our coffee, and just taking in the spectacular view was our favorite part of the day. Jack and Nancy could not have been more accommodating. The cottage was cozy, comfortable and clean. It also was well supplied with cookware, books, games, and interesting photos and artwork. Shelter Bay Cottage is in an ideal location between Munsing and Marquette, which provides all sorts of activities whether you drive east or west. Once home, friends were interested in hearing more about the cottage after we shared what a good time we had in the UP. I'm sure Jack and Nancy will be getting some calls!

We loved the cabin and the area. No crowds, no phone, nothing to do but relax. The view was spectacular. The waves on the beach made it feel like being at the ocean. A week was not long enough and we can't wait to go back. Jack and Nancy made sure everything was perfect. It was great visiting with them and learning about the area.

We have stayed at Shelter Bay Cottage three times with our family and each time we love it even more! The cabin is cozy, warmly decorated, clean, and has a kitchen with plenty of dishes and utensils for all your cooking needs. Shelter Bay offers something for everyone. You can curl up in a cozy chair to read a good book (there are plenty in the cabin to choose), put a puzzle together or play a game (the closet is well stocked with both), enjoy a cup of coffee or glass of wine on the covered deck watching beautiful Lake Superior, or feed and enjoy watching the birds and chipmunks,. There is a wonderfull campfire area which we highly recommend for making smores and an awesome screened in (glass windows, too) gazebo to sit in and look at the lake. There are plenty of attractions in the surrounding areas, such as Munising and Marquette. You can swim, enjoy restaurants, hike to beautiful waterfalls, or take the Pictured Rocks cruise. You can enjoy a wonderful meal (the white fish is highly recommended) at the Brownstone Inn or barbecue on the grill at the cabin. Everything is wonderful at Shelter Bay. Our favorite part may be falling asleep or waking up to the wonderful sounds of Lake Superior waves. It is such a peaceful sound. We cannot recommend Shelter Bay Cottage enough. You will love it!

Shelter Bay Cottage is everything the pictures show and more. We can't recommend it enough. Our first time to Shelter Bay Cottage was the summer of 2004 and we have returned every summer since. The location is great on Lake Superior; awesome sunrises, great rock hunting, and not far from great things to do in Marquette or Munising. The cottage is very cozy and clean, and even if the weather is poor, its a great spot to read a book, play games with the kids, or enjoy a glass of wine on the covered back porch which faces Lake Superior. Bottom line...we love Shelter Bay!

This is a great cabin for a small family. It has a well equiped kitchen with everything that you would need for a fantastic getaway. The view from the front porch is awesome!!! Though the lake in front of the cabin is rocky, it's only a short drive to a beautiful sand beach with miles of walking and some of the warmest water in Lake Superior (Swam in it every time we been there) It's location about midway between Munising and Marquette (20 miles either way) is very handy and the drive to either town is beautiful. The fishery in Munising has great smoked and freash fish. Marquette has many good places to eat, a great food coop, and is very outdoor friendly. The Barne's are very hellpful and accomidating. They have good information and history of the area. We have spent a week over here over each of the last few summers and have enjoyed coming up to the Big Lake for vacation. We look forward to visiting again this summer.

My husband and I have been vacationing at Shelter Bay Cottage for more than six years. The last two years we have extended our stay to a full two weeks. We continue to be amazed by the beauty of the Shelter Bay area, the beaches, waterfalls, hiking, biking, kayaking and numerous other activities. The minute we arrive we are at peace. The owners always have new adventures for us! There is plenty of shopping and wonderful restaurants, our favorite being the Brownstone Inn. The cottage is fully equipped, sparkling clean and always welcoming! We anxiously await our favorite vacation spot.
