Ruby House sits on an old downeast coastal farmstead at the head of Pigeon Hill Bay. The house overlooks the salt marsh and inlets of the Bay as well as Pigeon Hill on the scenic Petit Manan peninsula. The home's large farmers porch provides a comfortable viewing spot, rain or shine. Be on the lookout for eagles, osprey, fox and deer. Beautiful perennial gardens surrounding the house are a delight of colors and scents throughout the season. Beyond the gardens and the old barn, green pastures filled with wildflowers and old apple trees attract deer and other wildlife, even moose, particularly early in the morning and around dusk.

Inside, the home the open-concept first floor is warm and welcoming with its beach stone chimney running up the center of the house. The kitchen, dining and living areas have plenty of places to relax, and a separate sunroom can be used as an extra sleeping area. The deck off the sunroom is a great place to have a cocktail and watch the sun set. The large first-floor bathroom includes an antique claw-foot tub, pedestal sink and a unique cedar and copper shower. There are two areas on the open-concept second floor, one area with queen size bed, closet, computer desk and in the turet on the second floor is great sitting area with tv, and offers peaceful views across the march and meadow.

Ruby House on the Joe Leighton road is a convenient place to launch day trips throughout the downeast area, whether by bike, boat or car. The location is peaceful but not remote, and is only a few minutes drive from Route 1. Ruby House is ideal for families who want to be near, but not directly on the water. You can smell the salt air, hear lobster boats in the distance, and be on the open water in a kayak in less than five minutes. You may not want to leave but if you do;

Things to do: Take a left at the bottom of the driveway and walk to Bar Island, an easy 1.5 miles across the causeway that separates Bobby's Creek from Pigeon Hill Bay. At the end you'll get a stunning view of Bois Bubert Island and the open Atlantic. There are several places to launch a kayak or small boat along the road, or you can buy a few lobsters or crabmeat for dinner at Dorr Lobster Co. on Bar Island.

Puffin tours and whale watching trips are available nearby, or stay on dry land and visit the Petit Manan Bird Sanctuary just a few miles from the house. Activities include hiking the paths down to the shore, picking wild blueberrys, bird watching, biking the dirt roads, and just enjoying the quietness and beauty of Maine.

Be sure to visit the Wildflour Bakery in the village of Steuben for awesome homemade bread, coffee and sweets but get there early-they sell out quick. Several other area restaurants offer everything from lobster to pizza, fresh fish and more.

Easy kayak portage is minutes from the house or take a drive to nearby lakes including Tunk and Spring River, pack a picnic and spend the day swimming and boating.

The quaint neighboring town of Milbridge has everything you need including a grocery store, bank, pharmacy, movie theater, restaurant, gas station, Laundromat and country gift shops. (Sat. farmers Mkt. 9-12).

McCellan Park in Milbridge is a beautiful spot for a picnic overlooking the islands and open ocean. Don't miss it, and along the way you'll pass by an Extreme Makeover: Home Edition home that was built on the Wyman Road.

Drive up the coast 60 miles to Campobello Island, Canada and tour the beautiful garden and home of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Along the way visit famous Quoddy Head Lighthouse in Lubec.

Barlett Estate Winery, a few miles south of Steuben in Gouldsboro, offers wine tastings and tours and you can purchase their award-winning wines on site.

Schoodic Point (part of Acadia National Park) in Winter Harbor is a great place to watch the waves crash upon the rocky shore, particularly at mid-tide and only 15 miles from home. From Winter Harbor you can also catch a ferry to Bar harbor for a day of shopping and fun and to avoid the traffic. Take a bus tour on the Island Explorer to the top of Cadillac Mt. in the beautiful Acadia National Park with its unbelievable panoramic views of the ocean and its surrounding islands.

The Cat Ferry is available in Bar Harbor for trips to Nova Scotia. Reservations are required.

When you are ready to head to Ruby House, be sure to pack binoculars, camera, walking or hiking shoes, bird book, bikes, kayak, canoe or boat, rain or wind jacket, sun hat or cap, backpack or fannypack and your Passport if planning a trip to Canada.
