    • I participated in a one week yoga retreat at Retiro Maya from 2/24 - 3/3/07. Our cabana was spacious, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was partially open to the air with palm trees and plants around the bright red and yellow tiled shower. The shower had hot water most of the time, and when we had to wait a while for the generator or the pump, it was a minor inconvenience. We enjoyed the candlelit nights, the star filled skies, the powdery white sands - both on the beach and on the floor of the cabana. The daily maid service was appreciated, and the freshly raked sand floor was a nice to come 'home' to during our stay. Lu and Erika were wonderful hosts, a wealth of information about local cenotes, ruins, restaurants and shopping. The vegetarian meals included fresh squeezed orange juice every day, sliced cantaloupe, honey dew melon, papaya and pineapple at breakfast. Wonderful salads, Mexican pasta and tortilla casseroles, guacamole, rice and beans for lunches and dinners. Local fish or chicken could be ordered for an additional charge. If you are looking for a rustic, quiet, beautifully maintained retreat, with cabanas just steps away from the turquise water with trade winds rustling through the palm trees, I would highly recommend Cabanas Retiro Maya.

    • My family and I stayed at the newly remodeled house for the second time. It is gorgeous. We had the best vacation in our lives. My children, in their teens, never left the water, so my husbahd and I where able to enjoy the house almost to ourselves. We had a cook the whole time which really made it a vacation for me. She is a wonderful cook and had the house spotless all the time. We really recomend this beautiful house in paradise very confortable and with exquisite taste. I will be happy to answer any questions that you might have. Devalu Alok New York

    • I would like to recommend the place I stayed in Tulum, Mexico, Retiro Maya. The owner Lu, is a wonderful woman, providing a warm welcome to a small place in paradise with 13 rustic cabanas (no electricity, mine had a real bathroom) a larger house for rent, and workshop space over looking the beach and it was heaven. If you want a tranquil vacation in a gorgeous place with a personal atmosphere and excellent service, this is it! I also had massages with the most amazing healer, a Mayan shaman, Daniel Pool Pech. (You can go through the Retiro Maya website to reach him.) The experience of a lifetime! As a healer, I am very sensitive to the energy of a place, and the energy of this place was wonderful. I felt very safe staying there by myself. I look forward to teaching workshops at Retiro Maya as well as taking my vacations there.

My wife and I (college teacher, consultant, 50's) spent a week at Retiro Maya in March, 2005 and had a wonderful time. We'll go back as soon as we can. The resort is a small collection of rustic beach cabanas, run by an owner who signs her emails "peace and love," and who bills it as the "place for romantic love," which I guess refers to the large comfy beds and candle light. It appeals to people who value close contact with sand, sun, and sea, without a lot of modern facilities and technology between them and the environment, but who also want a bit more comfort than straight-out beach camping. That's us. We brought a whole suitcase full of snorkel gear for excursions to cenotes and reefs, but wound up just completely relaxed on the beach with good books for the entire week. On the positive side, Retiro Maya is in a perfect location right on a fabulous beach, close to two excellent restaurants: (a 5-minute walk north along the beach) and (a 9-minute walk south along the beach). The beach itself is fantastic -- soft, cool sand, no rocks, few weeds, plenty of surf for riding the waves, nearly deserted, except for right in front of various resorts, goes on for miles to the south for long walks. The cabanas are nicely sized, with king-size beds, good mattresses, stick exteriors, stucco interiors, sand floors, thatched roofs, mosquito nets, covered front porch with hammock and two very comfortable wooden chaise lounges with blue canvas pads, no electricity, candles provided, clean sheets and fluffy white towels. Next time, we would go for the cabanas with private bath and shower nearest to the beach. The owner Lu catered to us all the time and the staff was very nice and helpful, . The restaurant was nicely designed, with delicious mexican food, Opened all day. Bottom line: for us, wonderful location, fabulous beach, nice staff and well-designed cabanas. We can't wait to return.

Atentamente, Alejandro Rivera Executive Director From US 888-845-8332 From MX 664-681-8344

    • Hi all, Just a mention, vacationed in Mexico, about an hour south of Cancun; an easy drive, or cab ride, about $100 US, from the airport. Tulum, on the ocean. beautiful, quiet place. turquoise waters. very warm weather. we stayed at a lovely place, Retiro Maya. Palapa huts, near the ocean. no electricity, they provide candlight, very romantic. Retiro Maya was recommended to us by a friend, and now I am recommending it. Some rooms have bathrooms, which I suggest. There are communal bathrooms showers as well. Very nice and clean. An open-air palapa restaurant, great place to sit in the evening and have a beer & guacamole. Great food too. If you want more info, you can contact thelovely woman who owns it, Lu, or email me if you have questions. I hope 2005 is off to a good start for everyone! best, Floyd
