Great time at Chimney Canyon Estate

Guest: Couple from South Texas (Riviera, TX)
Date of Stay: 08/16/10 Review Submitted: 09/28/10

We recently stayed in this home for a month...enjoying every minute! We were looking for a place to escape the Summer South Texas heat...and we found it. It is quiet, secluded, yet close to so many area attractions, including Deadwood, Mt. Rushmore, Spearfish Canyon, Custer State Park, etc....even a day trip into Wyoming and/or Montana...to view the scenery such as Devil's Tower and wildlife. The home is comfortable, with attractive decor to fit the area. We enjoyed feeding the wildlife off the balcony...esp. the deer and turkeys. Our only disappointment...it didn't get QUITE cold enough to use the fireplace...as we left in mid-September. Fall colors were beginning to be beautiful before we left. Spearfish Canyon is a MUST SEE Property was clean and well maintained. We would definitely stay in this home again.

Perfect vacation base

Guest: Heidi (Waconia, MN)
Date of Stay: 06/28/10 Review Submitted: 07/06/10

My family stayed at Chimney Canyon Estate for 4 nights in June/July of 2010. This home was perfect for our vacation with our 2 young boys. Everything was clean, comfortable and inviting after a long day of traveling/sightseeing. I want all of our friends and relatives to go to the hills and stay here. I truly cannot say enough good things and only hope Michael is still renting his home when we return to the Black Hills in the future.

Owner response:Thanks, Heidi, for taking time to offer your comments about your stay. I am so pleased it worked out so well for your family, and especially your 2 boys. If your travels take you to the Black Hills once again, I would be delighted to have you stay at my home. Michael

Thank you for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home. It is a great base location for visiting all of the Black Hills attractions. We are frequent visitors to the region and the house is a great alternative to renting multiple hotel rooms. The owner and local representative are very nice to deal with and provided great dining suggestions. Thanks again. Looking forward to a future visit.

Owner response:Hi Matt, I am so glad you had a great time at Chimney Canyon Estate. So many others find my home to be centrally located with easy access to so many attractions in the Black Hills of South Dakota. I am pleased, too, that my restaurant suggestions worked well for you and your party. I hope to host you again if your travel brings you back to our beautiful part of the world. Sincerely, Michael

We had a great time in South Dakota while staying at your restful home! Thank you for sharing it with us. It certainly allowed for a unique way to enjoy the Black Hills away from the tourists!

Thank you for sharing your wonderful home. My Dad (77 years old) and I had a wonderful time seeing the sights from the Badlands to Devils's Tower and everything in between. This log home is the BEST Place to come home to after a long day on the road. You and this home have helped to make my Dad's dream come true. Thank you! PS.. Elk Creek Steakhouse (just down the road, next exit East) is a great place to eat... the steaks melt in your mouth! And going shopping? -- go to Hill City v.s. Keystone... much nicer shops. And don't miss the "Christmas Store" outside of Hill City right next to the winery on Highway 16!

Michael, what a wonderful home you have. It seems every window has another spectacular view. We love the history of the West and your Native American decor fits nicely. We enjoyed our 3 days and hate to leave. Hopefully we can do this again after finding this "home away from home".

We have had an enjoyable stay at your home in South Dakota. The scenery is breathtaking. The Deer & Turkeys were up close. Even the rabbits said "hello" every morning. For the most part the weather was great... only one rainy evening. The sunsets were spectacular! We came out for the Sturgis Rally and got to see a lot of this Beautiful State. This has been a wonderful vacation! PS.. the driveway is a little tricky on a bike.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful home with us. We had a great time here. The turkeys & rabbits seemed to greet us each morning & evening while were here. We even got to enjoy the deer and a beautiful red fox. South Dakota is a truly enchanting place. The Black Hills are gorgeous and we had a great time everywhere we went. For new visitors, see the Buffalo at Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore is a site but you need to visit Crazy Horse Monument. The Badlands are beautiful and don't miss the archeological digs in Hot Springs (Mammoth Hot Springs). There is so much to see and do here, too much to mention. Oh yeah, go to Devil's tower in Wyoming... it was awesome! If yo like Indian art, to to Prairie Edge in Rapid City... it is truly wonderful. This house is so enjoyable, thank you again!

We had a wonderful stay at CCE! It felt like we were staying at the home of a friend, who cleared some space in the closet, dresser drawers, and bathroom for us. The house is very comfortable, and the views from the huge, wrapround deck are wonderful. What a lovely place to enjoy a glass of wine at the end of the day! And we SO enjoyed seeing the 3 "resident" deer every day! The jetted AND heated tub in the upstairs bathroom is a great place to relax too, especially with some lovely music piped in!(Ladies: bring your bath pillow; I was glad to have mine.) The home's location is perfect for exploring the Black Hills area. It's so close to I-90 that it's very easy to get around. The longest trips we took were to Devil's Tower, Wyoming & the Mammoth site in Hot Springs; both were just 90 minutes from CCE. We wouldn't hesitate to stay at CCE again, if we're fortunate enough to return to the beautiful Black Hills someday. Enjoy!

Thanks for sharing your beautiful home... it had everything we needed and wanted. Our girls enjoyed watching the deer and turkeys parading across the yard on a daily basis! The view is gorgeous & inspiring. This was a great place for our family to spend time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We leave here truly renewed.

I met my sister and her husband in Rapid City and we stayed at Chimney Canyon for 9 days. It was fabulous....the turkeys, deer, trees, serenity sitting on the porch. Can't ask for much more. Probably saw everything there was to see and do....Mt. Rushmore, Deadwood 1/2 Marathon, Wild Horse Sanctuary, etc. Fantastic location, fabulous retreat.

What a beautiful place to spend some time reconnecting with family! Our son joined us from Texas and we spent a little time being tourists but most of the time was spent 4-wheeling on near by trails and reconnecting with family some of us had not seen for a long time. The view is spectacular and riders saw a herd of elk with their calfs and we saw turkey daily on the property. Everyone wants to do it again next year! This is a perfect get away and a perfect house to do it in!

We loved the house, stayed there 4 nights and had the best time. I would highly recommend this home. Its the perfect location for Sturgis, Deadwood and Keystone. The turkey and deer making their way down the hill in the mornings, the rock fireplace and the piped in music to all rooms was delightful. We hope to vist again real soon.

What a terrific retreat for our little family! WE enjoyed a wonderful relaxing week in your beautiful home -- taking in the sunrise off the deck, reading (and napping!) in the easy chairs, hiking around the area and showing off the beauty of the Black Hills to our son. It was the perfect antedote to our busy lives -- a chance to relax and enjoy this precious time together as a family! Jennifer, Greg & Sam

Thanks for making our 14th Wedding Anniversary a memorable one. I think we managed to see everything possible in the "off" seanson. We managed to see the highlights of Deadwood, Lead, Custer, Spearfish Canyon (80 miles via snowmobile), Ellsworth Air Force Base, Rapid City -- and everything in between. It was nice coming "home" in the evening... we both felt very at home... The only thing we didn't get to see was the Buffalo herds (Custer Satate Park) -- but we'll save that for another time. Thanks again. Monty & Denise

After spending 3 days here, we leave with renewed interest in building our own log home. I wish we could pack up the view & take it with us. The guys enjoyed snowmobiling & us 2 girls enjoyed hanging out & cooking. WE even put together a 1000 piece puzzle! It was time well spent with everyone. Thanks, Michael, and have a wonderful New Year. Dwight, Sandy, Tyler & Luke, Dan & Alisha

Without question, an incredible house, with a fantastic view of the moon (thanks for having a telescope!) Not only that, but also a very interesting selection of reading material -- I didn't read either of the two books I brought with me. I just wish I had more time. Oh, who am I kidding? I wish I lived here! Thank so much for opening your house to us. Bill & Tang Eddingfield & Friends

Our family was priveledged to stay at this lovely cabin. It was so convenient from I-90 and access to the major attractions, yet off the beaten path which made us feel secluded. We enjoyed our time at the home as much or more than the sites and highly recommend this beautiful place to anyone wanting a quiet, leisurely break from it all.

This cabin was the PERFECT retreat for our family vacation. It was near attractions, yet because the home borders the forest we felt we were in a more secluded area. The home was beautifully decorated, clean and comfortable. We enjoyed grilling on the deck, listening to the sound system, "lighting" a fire in the fireplace, and just visiting with our good friends and children. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you for a great memory!

We stayed a week at this property and enjoyed every minute of it. The location is fantastic, the property itself is new and nicely decorated, and has all the amenities one could want. We spend most of the time relaxing in the comfortable chairs or sitting out on the deck, but this property is also convenient to many Black Hills attractions so would work nicely as a base to travel from. There is a bit of faint highway noise that can be heard while on the deck, but it is very minor and should not sway anyone's decision to stay here. We're looking forward to coming back again!

This house exceeded all our expectations! The site is perfect for travel to the many Black Hills attractions, yet offers a quiet place to come home to, with just the right amount of seclusion. The sunsets are gorgeous, the beauty of the pines breath-taking. We had three adults and four children staying and had more than enough room for everyone. The house is beautifully decorated and has all you need for that perfect vacation getaway. You will not be disappointed! This house made our visit to the Black Hills especially memorable. Because our stay here was so fantastic, we already feel like coming back!

This is a great base of operations from which to explore the Black Hills. It's close enough to Rapid City to make it totally convenient to go into town for dining, yet out far enough for peaceful solitude. Nestled among Ponderosa pine, you get a their lovely scent wafting to you on the big wrap around deck on a warm day. Not a lot nicer than sitting on the deck with the South Dakota sun in your face while you look out over a forested canyon with a wonderfully pine scented breeze softly cooling you. Nice location. Great log home. What's not to like?!
