Great facility and convenient
Great facility and convenient
The facilities were great. We couldn't take our kid to the ocean because the waves were too strong and there were too many corals and rocks, so the salt water swimming pool was a perfect alternative. The reverse osmosis water treatment system was very helpful. We could just fill up our water bottles from the tap and go. We got everything we need in the kitchen. The only thing was there was not an exhaust fan for cooking burner, so smoke and steam would remain in the open concept room. We tried to use low heat to limit the amount of steam. The two queen-sized beds were comfortable and A/C was quiet. The drawback about this unit was there was not a window except a small one in the bathroom, but we couldn't open it due to no screen. We didn't want any mosquito in our room. It was like a basement apartment, so it was a bit damp at time when steam from shower trapped inside the condo. The dining area was a bit tight for four people; two would be perfect. We ate outside by the pool instead and also to avoid more ants from food dropping on the floor. There were quite a few hooks in the bathroom which were great for towels, but not for swimming suits and they didn't get dried due to no air circulation. We had to put all our wet clothes and towels outside to dry by the sun and wind. The condo had a very nice environmental policy which we could appreciate. The maid service was great. We thought that there would be laundry facilities in the room or in the building, but there was none. However, the laundry service in the town was nice and quick. So it was not a problem. Over all, it was a great location with nice restaurant nearby, and a couple convenient stores. The parking lot was great and shady. We also saw quite a lot of wild lives, even helped baby turtles get to the sea. It was a great experience. We would love to come back to stay at Playa Caribe, but maybe with a room that has more air circulation.

My husband and I and are 4-year-old son stayed at Casita Maria for two nights. We really appreciated the warm welcome from the staff and the goodie basket (especially the pineapple!). This is truly one of the best bargains in Akumal. We had a couple of days to kill before moving into a larger villa with friends for a week, and Casita Maria and the Playa Caribe condo complex suited our needs very well. Our son loved the pool, and we even were alerted to a turtle nesting in the middle of the night! The casita was very clean and brightly appointed, and stocked with just about anything we would need. We enjoyed it!

We wanted to stay some place in Akumal as we had visted the town a year earlier. We picked a great spot the staff are just great, the location is perfect, and the bay is full of turtles! The Casita was just the right size for the two of us since we only sleep in the room as we are out on the beach or to one of the many good restaurants it was perfect for our first stay in Akumal.

Casita Maria is the BEST lodging in Akumal!
Casita Maria is the BEST lodging in Akumal!
This is the second time we have stayed at Casita Maria and we LOVE it! There are 4 in our family, including 2 children (ages 6 and 9) and Casita Maria is very family-friendly. In addition to being the best bargain in Akumal, centrally located (a quick walk to the lagoon or Akumal Beach), there is great snorkeling a few steps away. We saw turtles, parrot fish, lots of coral and an assortment of other tropical fish. The casita is clean with everything your family will need to make at least some of your meals at home. Being foodies, we enjoy dining out and El Ultimo Maya is the BEST bargain with the freshest food in Akumal. You will need to cross the highway and go to Akumal pueblo for this fabulous food and the owner, Teresa, treats her guests like family. Also, just a few doors down from Casita Maria, is Gena's restaurant. She serves lionfish and you don't want to miss hearing about her quest to rid the Akumal Bay of this threatening fish. Gena's fish tacos are fabuloso. Enjoy this lovely casita! Oh, the pool is freshing too!

Owner response: We're so glad you and your family enjoy Casita Maria as much as we do! Gena's wasn't there the last time we were there so I'm excited about trying out a new place. It is our pleasure to have you at Casita Maria! Polly and Chris
It is with pleasure that I write this review of Casita Maria and Akumal. For many reasons - accommodations, location, available activities, etc. - the casita and town were a perfect fit for our family. We (mid-40's couple with 11 year old son) unanimously declared this our best vacation ever! Casita Maria is a pretty and nicely appointed studio unit in the Playa Caribe complex. It was exceedingly comfortable with crisp white sheets on the beds and all the necessary kitchen equipment if one were inclined to do more cooking than we did (only breakfasts and lunches for us). The casita stayed comfortably cool with little effort and was sparklingly clean and fresh-smelling. Incidentally, this was not the case at other accommodations that we checked out. The on-site staff, including Augustine, and the owners were gracious and helpful with local info and tidbits. The location of Playa Caribe could not have been more perfect for our family. It is situated directly on tranquil Half Moon Bay, with its excellent snorkeling and abundance of local fauna. We spied turtles nesting (including a Leatherback) and iguanas lounging. We snorkeled for hours on end (including in the lovely Yal Ku lagoon, a 5 min. walk from the condo). Our son delighted in catching all manner of lizards, geckos, crabs, etc. An absolute highlight of our trip was the night we spent two hours watching a turtle nest hatch. We saw over 100 hatchlings tumble down the sandy shoreline as they fled to the ocean! All these experiences occurred in the "backyard" without crowds of tourists or need of guides. A short walk down the road (or a bit longer trek around the point) brought us to the slightly more populated but beautiful, white sand Akumal Beach (AB). AB has quaint palapa bars and a few excellent restaurants that we thoroughly enjoyed. While Akumal Beach has certainly been "discovered" it felt more authentic than the popular all-inclusive resorts. We appreciated that there were many picnicking families and teenagers on dates from the nearby Akumal Pueblo alongside tourists from Mexico and abroad. We would highly recommend the casita and Akumal to any traveler with a love of beautiful places, nature, and the ability to entertain oneself.

Owner response: We are so glad you found Akumal as magical as we do. Thanks for being our guest at Casita Maria.
Excellent location, nice condo. Beach is rocky, so bring water shoes, but very well kept. Saw many turtles and swam with a few at the next beach down. A bit of a walk, but still doable to the downtown where there are some nice restaurants and shops. Akumal is easy driving distance to interesting historic sites, (Tulum, Coba), and to nice, different beaches and cenotes. Definitely worth staying here! Now, quickly forget what I wrote, as I don't want the condo to be booked the next time I want to stay there!

Owner response: Thank you for staying at Casita Maria. I am surprised that the beach was rocky. It has always been sandy on our part, the middle part, of Half Moon Bay and rocky at the endpoints. However, because the reef is so close to shore you really do need water shoes upon entering the water. Glad you had a nice stay
We usually stay in condo's while traveling and have been to Akumal many times. We love Playa Caribe Condo's! The location is great, Augustine and staff are wonderful! I highly recommend Casita Maria. The beds are very comfy, the entire condo is very well equipped. Thank you SO much!!!!

This casita has all you need for an affordable vacation. It has a full kitchen with all the utensils you can think of. They even supply coffee filters. A maid will come in and clean up the place and even do the dishes daily. It is not ocean front, but for the price you can't complain. The beach is about 50 feet away and there is a small pool to use. The staff is wonderful and very helpful. Can't wait to visit again.

Beautiful Property, well managed
Beautiful Property, well managed
We stayed at Casita Maria for a week (3 adults on a SCUBA and sightseeing trip) and it was everything we needed to call home. The beach is right around on the other side of the property, and upon arrival, we spent our first day hanging out with tropical drinks under the palapas facing Half Moon Bay. It was a peaceful, uncrowded beach, with nice snorkeling right in the bay if you don't want to walk down to Yal-ku lagoon. A great restaurant/bar called La Buena Vida is a 3 min walk down the beach from the property, and kept our tummies full of ceviche and delicious drinks. Property management and service were great, Augustin was able to answer all our last minute questions and make suggestions on the sights that were most worthwhile to see. The casita is not huge or fancy, but it was more than enough space for three people with giant suitcases as well as full bags of dive gear. It is also in a great location for sightseeing in the Yucatan, since you are in the middle of the Riviera Maya and can drive easily to Tulum, Coba, Playa and we even made it out to Ek Balam. The owners are also great and very helpful, answered all our emails promptly and gave us so many travel tips to plan our stay. If we were to return to the Yucatan, we would definitely be staying in Akumal and Casita maria again. Thank you!
