Just What We Needed. . . Perfect Cottage for our pre-college family trip!

My family (mom and dad, four kids ages 10-18) enjoyed a perfect five days in this cottage. We arrived late at night (or more accurately, very early in the pre-dawn) and the cottage was just as pictured, except the owner had thoughtfully provided a new coffee maker and a few breakfast items, so we didn't have to rush out to the grocery store. The quick walk to the beach made it easy to return to the cottage for lunch or forgotten items. We used the provided beach chairs and stayed on the beach way past when the rental chairs were put away -- our favorite time of day. I did laundry while we played card games in the welcoming sun room. The enclosed outdoor shower was a hit with sandy kids -- it was more popular than the indoor bath! Kitchen well equipped for family dinner preparation when we didn't dine at Gilligan's - - our favorite restaurant (off-island). It was nice to be "unplugged" (no in-house wifi) and the cyber-cafe at the Straw Market was an easy bike ride away. Nice pool right across the street but with the beach so close by, most of our time was spent there. We have stayed at several other properties on the island (including private homes) and this was hands down our favorite, thanks to location and bed configuration. First time we have not rented from the resort itself but it won't be our last! With pool access we didn't lose any amenities but saved lots of money! Owners were really easy to work with via email and although we did not meet in person, I hope we have made new friends. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will return!
Owner response:We are so glad you enjoyed Kiawah as much as we do! Thanks for the great feedback and would love to have y'all back with us next year or sooner!
Recommended for:Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway, families with young children.

We rented this home last week and will not be back. Upon our arrival the cobwebs were ALL over the front and back porch. There were hundreds of spiders and ants. We called the owner and he said “well its is a nature preserve”? Humm ever hear of PEST control? The spiders alone were enough to want to leave. They were inside the home and all over the porch. Every time you went outside at night they would drop on you and BITE! I had to buy two cans of RAID to just get them somewhat under control! The day before we left, a pest guy came! Lol........ The porch / deck needs to be pressured washed (moldy and mildew) and the gutters need to be cleaned badly! The porch chairs have no cushions on them so they are basically useless. (Metal chairs = HOT) The kitchen is NOT supplied with basic things you need to cook / enjoy. You can barley fit a plate in the microwave, there was NO blender! NO dishwashing liquid or dishwasher detergent.... NO trash bags! Those are basic things that should be in a rental! The kitchen looks like it used to be a bedroom, converted into a makeshift cooking area! There is NO WIFI! Come on people its 2011!! There is NO radio / music! NO CD / MP3 player? And basic cable which the remotes did not have batteries! Oh yea.....one window was broken and the paint was coming off the wall around the front door! For the rates published on the add........ a week, this is NOT a house you will enjoy! UNLESS the owners step up and update / fix / supply the home with basic amenities!
Owner response:The house is sprayed by pest control twice a month and does come upon request. As a nature conservatory, Kiawah has all sorts of bugs and wildlife - it is hard to eliminate them altogether. The listing excludes WiFi, and the island provides it free in several locations, so please no one be confused in the future. The kitchen is the standard size ( with new cabinets and appliances) for Sparrow Pond cottages (and Inlet Cove and Night Heron). The entire cottage was painted is year under the new regime color schemes.
