Amazing place, just as pictured, at an excellent price!

Date of Stay: 07/17/11 Review Submitted: 09/17/11

We had been to Maui twice before, so when my husband qualified for a work trip to the big island, we thought about extending our stay to Maui again. However, we decided to stay longer on the big island (after his work trip) and are so glad we did. First of all, we were THRILLED to have found this place. It is just as beautiful as in the pictures, probably even more so. What sold me on it was the bathroom, especially the bamboo view -- just as awesome in real life. We didn't really do any cooking while we were there but found some great restaurants around that we enjoyed. We enjoyed going to the harbor each day (north of Kona) and watching the huge marlins come in. We also enjoyed spending time in Kona, shopping and trying new restaurants. However, about 5 minutes south of the place is the best snorkeling on the whole island -- nicknamed "Two-Step" next to the Place of Refuge. Both days we found ourselves surrounded by dolphins; it was AMAZING. If you want to find a beautiful place to stay for a great price, especially if you love to snorkel and swim with dolphins for free, this is it. You won't find a better deal (that I know of anyway!) We will definitely stay here again the next time we come.

Great place to relax

Guest: Diana (Colorado)
Date of Stay: 12/28/10 Review Submitted: 01/04/11

My husband and I spent Christmas week in the Captain's Suite and were quite pleased. Clean, quite, spacious, beautiful setting and wonderful view. The only little minor disappointment was the absence of a regular stove. There is a toaster oven, a microwave and a two burner hot plate which kept us fed but would have liked to be able to do a pizza. Very minor glitch. We especially loved sitting on the large lanai and watch rapidly moving storms and clouds. Great to have the laundry available. The other minor disappointment was that there were few even mediocre restaurants without driving several miles. The one quite notable exception was Keei Restaurant. The food was exceptional. And fell in love with the drink "Tsunami."

From Zero degrees to 80 degrees in 6 hours!

Date of Stay: 01/05/09 Review Submitted: 04/04/09

We stayed in the Captain's Suite from January 5th to 15th, 2009. We have stayed in several places on the Islands, but this is the best we've ever stayed at, hands down. The location is perfect - you can even walk up the road to the grocery store for the morning paper! The suite was spotless, virtually bugless (which says a lot for a tropical home), private, comfortable, and just made our whole vacation feel decadent at a very reasonable price. Front seat views of the sunset and coastline (bring your binos and watch the whales) all from the lanai are priceless. The hosts are friendly, considerate and caring, but respectful of our privacy. Everything in the rental was very clean and in like new condition. Having a washer/dryer was a godsend now the airlines are limiting baggage, especially for longer stays. We are ready to return in 2010, and hope to return for years to come. If you are a traveler who appreciates quality accomodations, privacy, convience, quiet, and a great view, this is the place for you. Gail and Jerry, Alaska.

Vacation at it's best!

Guest: Tim & Teri (Alaska)
Date of Stay: 01/16/09 Review Submitted: 03/31/09

January 16th thru February 14th 2009 Two word description - Very relaxing :-)!! What a place to spend a month away from home, especially being from Alaska. The temperature was 79 or 80 very comfortable degrees everyday. The view of the coast line from the large screened in deck/lanai which included the dinning area as well as a sitting area were outstanding as well as relaxing. The bathroom includes a large hottub and an oversized double shower. By the way the view of part of that same coast line from the shower was not too bad either. Leave the door open! Be sure and read the guest book, there are several good restaurants in the area and are highlighted in the book. Ho'okena Beach is approximately 12 miles south, about a 20 minute drive depending on traffic. It is small and quiet but offers some excellent snorkeling as well as just soaking up some sun. Showers and toilets are available. I would encourage guests to include a trip around the island. We drove South from Captain Cook with stops at the Kiluaea Volcano, Hilo, Waimea, Kohala Coast and home. The terrain in each of these areas is very different. Well worth the time (6hrs) spent on the road. Watch out for the two Cookie Monsters, Pono and Pua. They love dog cookies and certainly know how to work the guests to their advantage. Thanks to Nancy and Greg, great hosts! Tim & Teri

Luxurious & Inviting, with Beautiful Coastal View

Guest: Brian & Lisa (Virginia)
Date of Stay: 06/13/08 Review Submitted: 06/30/08

This June 2008 review updates the review I wrote following my first stay at Captain's Suite in December 2001. I still think this rental is the Big Island's best value. This spacious 1BR ocean view apartment at Captain Cook on the Big Island's central west coast is truly a standout. It's luxurious and inviting, from the slate floors with sculpted area carpets, fully-equipped and supplied gourmet kitchen, granite countertops, large screened deck with dining table and sitting area, oversized bathroom with hot tub and massive double shower, to the stunning 25-mile view of the coast. Everything is first-class. Captain's Suite is 12 miles (about 25 minutes) south of Kailua-Kona, and is an excellent base from which to explore all of the Big Island. Nearby, you can kayak to the isolated Captain Cook Monument (escorted by spinner dolphins) and enjoy its excellent snorkeling. Kona coffee plantations are minutes away. The world's best marlin fishing starts at Kona's Honokohau Harbor -- 15 miles north of Captain's Suite. During our stay in June, one of the charter boats came in early, towing a 900-pound blue marlin that wouldn't fit in the boat -- then went back out for more fishing. Easy day trips include South Point, black and green beaches, Hilo, the northwestern Kohala Coast, waterfalls and a botanical garden on the east coast, and more than a dozen beautiful beaches that also offer great snorkeling. At some, you can swim at a respectable distance with endangered green sea turtles. Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, erupts continuously about 3 hours away from Captain's Suite, a few miles south of Hilo. Visit Kilauea near dusk to watch its molten lava meet the sea. Mauna Kea, the world's tallest mountain measured from the ocean floor to its peak, is about 2.5 hours (4WD suggested, but 2WD works in clear, dry weather) -- where you can also hike to the unique permafrost-fed Lake Waiau at 13,020 feet. Beach gear, snorkeling equipment, and coolers are supplied by the owners, who are very gracious hosts. Captain's Suite is the Big Island of Hawaii at its best -- truly exceptional, and a great bargain. We were able to book just 2 nights in Captain's Suite. We would have stayed longer if it had been available. Next time we'll book sooner. Brian & Lisa, Founders of A1Vacations
