We had a wonderful time. The Teak Room is beautiful and had everything we needed. The beaches are great of course Ke'e for sunsets and snorkeling, walking to Tunnels. We got to do the Napali Kayak trip-exhausting but amazing. And thank you, Patricia, for your great recommendations. Bar Acuda, Tahiti Nui, Dolphin fish market. It was all fantastic. We hope to come back and stay again.

Many thanks for a wonderful stay. We loved the beach across the road-stars at night-wind in the palms and rain splashing on leaves. The tub was great for a soak after a beach walk to Tunnels and back-soft sand! We found we had everything we needed - Patricia was so kind and helpful. Lots of aloha. Mahalo!

Had a wonderful time! Much thanks. Will be back again! Capt Andy's dinner cruise with Dave was phenomenal. Do a chopper tour if you can too. Turtles at Anini, great fish at Ke'e with snorkel. Place was great. (need a few plastic cups $ bigger fridge but we made due) Lovely time, nice place. North shore is where its at! Outside shower is the ticket. Thank you. Great people & beautiful room. Perfect retreat to get away from my 3rd graders!

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Teak Room. Was wonderful to tumble into such a comfortable bed with such plush linens. Out door shower was always a treat. Decorations & equipped kitchen makes the place a comfy home away from home. Hiking the Napali coast is our favorite hike in the world! Mahalo! We will be back.

Didn't get a chance to write in the book so I'll do it now. We had an amazing time at our stay on the North Shore. This was our 10 year anniversary! 10 years ago we stayed at the Garden Cottage on this same property. We wanted to stay there again but the cottage had been booked a few day before. We thought we'd try out the Teak Room. The Teak Room was much bigger and looks so much better than the pictures on the web. The place had everything. And we met Patricia (she will do anything to make you happy and we were happy). Every morning we made our hot breakfast and walked across the beach and ate sitting on our beach chairs. Just me, my husband and the small crabs walking around on the sand. The weather was perfect...it didn't rain at all (we were there 5 nights). We enjoyed the teak room and love its location on the North Shore. We walked to the close coffee shop down the road and to dinner at the Mediterranean Cafe (yummy food). The only thing that stops me from giving the Teak Room five stars is that we could hear the people above us at the main house walking around on the wood floors. I think in 10 years we'll give the Hale Aloha, the main home a try. That way we will have been to all the rentals on this property! All in all it was a blessed time!

We had a lovely time even with rain for most of the time we were here. Brought back so many memories from the early-mid 70's-Valley House-Taylor Camp and my little tree house back in Hahakapiai. The area has developed but has managed to retain the beauty and character that I remember. The Teak Room was comfortable and had all the amenities we needed, except ice cube trays but there are some now :) Thanks for everything.

We were able to do most everything we wanted to do, including the farmer's markets, snorkeling, the Luau on the former sugar plantation south of Lihue, hiking the trail along the Napali coast and back to the waterfall, and a great helicopter ride on our last day. It took us 3 times for the helicopter--driving down to Lihue each time--but the third time was the charm and what a great day it was! Rege and I were very glad to have stayed in the Teak Room, rather than the Garden Cottage with all the rain--having more room spending more time inside. We were happy to meet Benadicta and Ky with their beautiful baby girl, Adda. We were not able to say goodbye, as they left for the south because of so much rain. It was really nice to have the private lanai, beautiful tropical gardens, laundry facilities, lots of storage, beautiful furnishings and the kitchen. Rege especially enjoyed the electric grill, outdoor shower and I loved the indoor jacuzzi/shower; it really felt great after the hike! He was making us smoothies several mornings and used a few of your lilikoi on the ground-delicious! We enjoyed meeting Patricia. She was really fun and speaks highly of both of you.

We had a great time and loved it here on the North Shore. Visits to the Kauai Museum and Limahuli Garden and Preserve and Kilauea Point Lighthouse were highly educational. The snorkeling at Ke'e Beach was amazing, better than Hanauma Bay on Oahu. We enjoyed the hike to Hanakapaiai beach and waterfall. You guys just might see us again. Thank Doug and Beverly. We enjoyed meeting you guys.

We had an amazing stay on the North Shore and absolutely loved the Teak Room? Thanks so much to Doug & Beverly for all the "little touches"; beach equipment, bottled water, snacks the warm & homey atmosphere. We are sad to be leaving here but will always remember how this place made our 10th anniversary so special. Some highlights - the Tuesday night luau at the Mediterranean Gourmet; great food and fantastic show, apple cobbler at the Village Bakery, seafood chowder at the Dolphin Restaurant, sunsets at Ke'e Beach, climbing Kalau Ridge Trail near Mt Wai'aleale and last, but not least- the Kalalau Trail. It was brutal, but great views! If anyone attempts this - start early and bring lots of water. Thanks again!

Contrary to the photos when we booked our honeymoon at the Teak Room, we found the place to be dark and dingy, with distinct smell of mold and mildew. The sheets had rust stains and overall the place was not somewhere we'd want to spend our vacation, let alone our honeymoon. The housekeeper tried her best to give us different sheets and spray the room down with odorizer, but in the end - you get what you pay for. Read the fine print regarding refund or cancellation policy. Had much difficulty with the landlord.
Owner response:Please see our past reviews, we have had our Teak Room listed for over 2 years. Our cancellation policy is clearly posted on our VRBO site and then again sent with the confirmation; no changes, no fine print. “Cancellations within 60 days are fully refundable, less 10% cancellation fee, if the travel dates are re-booked.” We take great pride in the cleanliness of our home and have never had anyone comment or say our places are not impeccably clean. Did everything we could for these guests, but the final comment and decision was from the new wife, “I do not want to be in a home on the north shore, I want to be in a hotel on the south shore.” and that is where they went.

Well, after quite the flight delay (5 extra hours @ LAX) compliments of Delta, we finally made it to this paradise! The North Shore is breathtaking, the weather was perfect and the Teak Room was a great place to stay during our honeymoon! We had some pretty neat adventures during our time on Kauai: *hiked part of the Kalalau Trail-amazing! *swam with sea turtles *enjoyed a fire & a few roasted marshmallows on Kepuhi Beach *found a not-so-friendly Monk seal *spent lots of time snorkeling @ Tunnels Beach *took a Jack Harter helicopter tour-definitely a highlight! *chowed some seriously dominant Hula pie @ Duke's in Lihue-Do not leave this island without getting Hula pie @ Dukes *Hand a fabulous dinner @ Hukilau Lanai *strolled down to NaPali Coffee Shop a couple of times *took full advantage of the free samples @ Kauai Coffee Co *went out to a luau @ Smith Family Garden *made some great meals here on the lanai-fresh Mahi, teriyaki burgers, grilled pineapple, pina coladas, etc. We really appreciated having such a beautiful place to stay with all the extra amenities (boogie boards, cooler, towels, etc.) and having the kitchenette allowed us to cook @ home (something we really enjoy doing) & save $ during our trip Thanks so much to the Howland's for sharing your little oasis with us and to Patricia for checking in on us & for your wonderful hospitality!!! We had a amazing honeymoon & hope to visit again soon! Thanks again.

What a wonderful retreat from the realities of day-to-day life here! We enjoyed the serene surroundings and beautiful attention to detail in the Teak Room. This is our seventh visit to Hawaii together, and our second to Kauai. Our experience here for a much-to-short Labor Day weekend have ensured it won't be our last. Thank you for this oasis of serenity in one of the most breath taking spots on earth-the North Shore of Kauai.

What an incredible place to call "home" for 3 days while in Kauai. We hiked to Hankapeia Falls...4 miles in and 4 long hard miles out... a 7 hour day, but worth every moment to experience one of the most majestic and unique places on earth! If you choose to do this hike, be aware of rugged terrain, many stream/river crossings so wear appropriate footwear and pack lots of water and a lunch. Swimming at the falls is refreshing and amazing! The Teak Room was the perfect home base to explore the North Shore. The kitchen was perfect, we bought fresh fish and veggies and cooked on the BBQ every night. The outdoor shower, comfy bed, plentiful amenities, and the decor made us feel at home. We loved "Archie" the spider on the Lanai he dept us company our 3 days here. Thanks for all the "extras" like the beach towels, boogie boards, beach chairs and most of all the awesome Kauai Guide under the TR We found the Queen's Bath and Maloa'a Bay because of it (pg 106). We have traveled to many places all over the entire world and this is truly a slice of heaven. We cannot wait to return one day. Thank you Doug and Beverly for the amazing accommodations! From the moment we arrived we felt so very fortunate to be here...so comfortable! Really love the layout; windows on both sides of the room and the great tub to relax in, the kitchen is perfect, and so very sweet to be across from the beach and hear those awesome waves throughout the day and night---WOW! Thank you so much for sharing your special place with us! A trip to the Lumahuli Gardens, just down the road is an absolute must---conservation, rehabilitation, and HOPE Illustrated, as well as being a very peaceful and and experience. Hike the NaPali coast, snorkel at Ke'e Beach, boogie board at Tunnels, and enjoy the moon at the beach right across the street. We also loved meeting Jack, he is quite a character. What a wonderful place you have here! It is amazing to be so close to the beach, to be actually located on the North Coast yet tucked away from it all, to have an outdoor shower when back home where it is about three feet of snow and it's - 20 degree C, and mostly to just "be". Perfect for our first time in Kauai (definitely not our last!) Best day included a sunny day that had a last minute, what the heck let's check flights with Sunshine Helicopter out of Princeville airport, although I can't really say we have had any bad days-like that's a bad thing! Loved it! See you next year! Toby & Trudy Calgary, Alberta, Canada Also Oil Country!!

Doug & Beverly, You have the perfect place on Kauai; we're so glad we found the Teak Room! We explored most of the island; as far north as we could go - hiking the Kalalau Trail, as far west (NW) as we could go - to the beach at Kawailoa Bay. And many places along the way. But the North Shore was our favorite. The scenery was amazing from everywhere! Snorkeling at Tunnels, diving at Sheraton Caverns, Hiking the Kalalau Trail, and stand up paddle boarding on the Hanlei River were some of the highlights of the trip. The Teak Room was a comfortable, perfectly equipped home to come back to every evening. Enjoyed the beach across the street a couple afternoons and an evening cam fire was relaxing too. It was a pleasure to meet you, Doug and Beverly! Again, your place is perfect. We plan to be back, Steve & Lisa Holland, Michigan

We really enjoyed our stay at the Teak Room. We felt instantly at home and felt we were experiencing Kauai every minute. The place looked great on line-but even better in person with great storage space, nice kitchen for making our simple breakfasts & tea, & by the wonderful indoor bathroom with tub & outdoor shower. We felt very fortunate to be here the same time as the owners, Doug & Beverly-they are wonderful people & it was great to spend some time with them. We really enjoyed the North Shore-hiking, walking the beaches & shopping. We didn't get a chance to swim or snorkel because of the waves - but the waves were wonderful to watch & experience. We are already mentally planning our next stay at the Teak Room Thank again, Mary & Carolyn Huga, MN (-20 degrees f there now)

What a comfortable space this is in one of the most beautiful places I've visited. We loved the Teak Room, the fresh air, majestic winter waves, and lush foliage. Patricia was such a helpful host as well. We counted up all the species of animals we met this week and reached 26, amongst my favorite were the Red-Footed Booby, NeNe, Tropic Bird, Humpback Wale, Hawaiian Stilt, and White-Rumped Shama. For anyone looking for a powerful winter experience, take a walk on Polihale on the the west side. The waves were so terrifying and equally awesome-like a living breathing beast. We felt small and had the beach and dunes to ourselves. We later learned from a local, that native Kauaians believe the dead souls leave the island through Polihale. We loved the Na Pali Coastline-the first 2 miles are much safer than I'd thought (in dry conditions). Thanks for the cozy place to spend our early am drinking coffee, eating papaya, and reading and late evenings relaxing and sleeping. I love the roosters and hen (we're chicken owners) so don't make soup of them on my account. It adds to the idyllic, rural experience of the North-shore. We enjoyed private jungle moments; jungle showers; spacious bathroom; luxurious sheets and of course the great Teak bed. Our favorite beaches just minutes away, sunset beaches. Doug & Beverly, My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at the Teak Room. We were on a tight budget and a short time frame, so we really appreciated that the Teak Room didn't require a 3-5 night minimum stay. The room was well appointed and we were greatful to find something within our budget that still managed to be romantic. It was our honeymoon afterall. Having access to a washer and dryer, especially after the Na Pali Coast trail, was a blessing. The lounge chairs on the porch were adorable. Patricia Hughes was wonderful. She was so helpful with information about where to go and what to do. Overall, we had a lovely time. Thank you for providing such a lovely space to those on a moderate budget. Cheers, Parish Burns
