Testimonial:
“We spent 8 days at the Palapas Resort over the New Years holiday. The village of La Playita is quaint and quiet with a couple decent restaurants and tiendas. The house is a short walk to the beach and marina and a cheap cab ride to San Jose del Cabo where you will find a good variety of restaurants. The house was perfect for the 5 couples that stayed here. Everyone had their own privacy and the kitchens were large enough to make and share meals together. The view from the infinity pool at sunset is breathtaking. We didn’t do any fishing, but you could easily pick up a boat within walking distance from the house. Definitely going to go back.”

A large group of us (4 families) spent spring break at Palapas this year. We rented the whole compund and found the varied accommodations well suited to provide both privacy and communal space. The location in the small fishing village of La Playita gets you away from the tourist scene and lets you truely relax. With the exception of the occasional over friendly dog on the beach we felt safe and secure the entire time we were there. John is a welcoming and relaxed host. Both kids and adults had a great time at Palapas and wouldn't hesitate to spend another spring break there in the future. Palapas is a real gem!Did you find this review helpful? Palapas is a wonderful retreat. I rented the cabana right next to a water fountain, which many species of birds frequented. It was just one of the many natural things to enjoy at Palapas. Eating outdoors and enjoying the surroundings was a relaxing way to start the morning. John is a fun guy, but I did have to tell him how to take the local buses all the way to the airport! And I would recommend you do that if your flight is not too early in the morning. It's SO easy and SO cheap. Make sure you bring the map of how to get to Palapas when you arrive. Just a heads up - taxi drivers don't know where it is. Luckily I did. I will definitely return to Palapas Resort before the area becomes too much like Cabo san Lucas!Did you find this review helpful? My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at Palapas for a couple of nights at the end of our Baja visit. The Location is fantastic if you are looking for something a little more authentic and less touristy. We wandered over to La Playita after a great meal at the Container near the Marina. Yes, you can walk there from San Jose del Cabo, although it is a big walk. No worries, local buses make the trip easy. We decided to book our last 2 days in a much more relaxed, affordable and quaint location away from the all inclusive Americanized setting across the Marina. Great choice! John's quaint Palapas are clean affordable and welcoming. We had the place to ourselves (except for John who has maintained a relaxed laid back setting). The place would be great for one or a small group planning a vacation. Couple of great places to eat right in La Playita and if you want more, the buses are easy to access and frequent (although they do not travel to La Playita after about 8pm). You can spend your days traveling all over los Cabos or just walking the vast beaches watching fishermen or whales. Freedom to customize your vacation and not miss a thing. Trip to the airport cheap and easy by bus (thanks John and previous guest for info sheet) Palapas One & On, as we would stay there again!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My wife and I stayed three nights at Palapas Resort before heading to Todos Santos for the remainder of our trip. It was a quiet and comfortable place that we enjoyed all to ourselves. John the owner lives on site and treated us as guests in his home but did not bother us a bit as we came and went. Palapas resort is away from the Hotel zone so if you are looking for a quieter getaway this is an option you should look into. La Playita is a walk away but not the nicest beach in the area but if you rent a car and I do recommend that you do you can drive a short distance to nicer beaches. Central San jose Del Cabo is minutes away with shops, art and restaurants. The highlight for us was lunch at Flora Farm which is 10 minutes from Palapas. I am a chef and Flora Farm is what food/dining should and used to be. Fresh ingredients that are harvested daily and served to you the same day, fresh bread baked on site. They raise farm animals at a different location. Outstanding! Close by is El Marinero Borracho (the drunken sailor) restaurant. It is on the east side of the marina. Inexpensive, delicious and great service too! http://www.facebook.com/pages/El-marinero-borracho-la-playita For those of you who don't want the obscene tourist lifestyle of Cabo but want to experience a taste of the old Baja check out San Jose Del Cabo and stay at John's Palapas Resort. Hope this helps! PhilDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My husband and I booked a flight and this resort the day prior to leaving. John, the owner was quick to respond to our email so we could make our arrangements. We were looking for a different vacation from the all-inclusives and saw the Palapas Resort online. It was as good as the reviews - quiet, out-of-the-way yet close to beach and shopping via bus at doorstep. We stayed in one of the two cabanas - comfortable bed with small fridge and coffee maker. We also had the use of the outdoor kitchen which was well equipped. Lovely 2nd floor pool with great views. Took bus to San Jose Del Cabo Centro and then changed to bus for groceries at Mega. Really enjoyed the peacefulness of the resort and the beach where we watched whales every day. We walked around La Playita to see the dolphins, marina and enjoyed the Drunken Sailor restaurant (where we met a drunken sailor before noon on a Sunday!) also Ali's and La Marina were great as well. Would very much like to return one day - great for family group or several couples. We had the Palapas Resort to ourselves for the entire week - and the Mini Super at bottom of hill was close for beer, water, tequila and fresh tortillas. And thanks John for the great music!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

I stayed at Palapas in early May and had a wonderful time. The host, John was very nice and accommodating. Palapas has beautiful landscaping and Palm trees, flowers and mature plants and trees. I walked to the beach and swimming areas and to restaurants that are only two blocks from Palapas. Palapas has a great infinity pool with an awesome ocean view. I just loved it. John has the place lite up at night and it looks very pretty. It was also fun taking the bus to downtown San Jose which is only a few minutes away. I really liked the downtown a lot and the beaches are really great. I will definitely be back to Palapas !Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Palapas resort is in the quaint fishing village of La playa in Puerto Los Cabos. Named a Bohemian Resort by the owner, John, Palapas is just that: a perfect place to set free the Bohemian in all of us. Travelers , artists, sport fishing enthusiast, surfers , beach combers, families or those who just want to strip away the corset of their 21st century life for a few weeks and relax without worrying if you tipped someone enough or if wearing flip flops’ in the lobby is no no. My husband and I enjoyed a relaxing yet adventurous week at the Resort. We stayed in the Juan Pesco Pad that was nicely appointed , with plenty of room for two couples. The accommodation was better than advertised The resort would be a perfect place for a small destination wedding party or family gathering as the property achieves both privacy and relaxed open community spaces such as the pool , outdoor kitchen and gardens. Town and the harbor are close. The owner was easy to work with and very attentive. Getting to the resort from the San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur, Mexcio (SJD) airport by Taxi was easy and inexpensive. We will defiantly return…and the price is right!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Owner info
About the owner: I started to design and build Palapas in 2000. I’m experienced in all phases of construction. I have a California General Contractors license and built custom homes from the ground up in the last thirty years in Santa Cruz County. I also built two homes in La Playita / Puerto Los Cabos in San Jose Del Cabo which includes ‘Palapas’ which I own and operate. I have a good working knowledge of Spanish. I’m a Commercial pilot and licensed California Real Estate Broker, and I specialize in Properties in the Los Cabos area, Baja Sur. I have experience as driver and tactician in large boat sailboat racing and also an avid cyclist. I have two beautiful daughters and live full time in my private unit at Palapas.
Why the Owner Chose Puerto Los Cabos:
I built Palapas around 2000. I selected the area because of what it has to offer. Los Cabos has all the conveniences here that you will find in the States. The beaches are some of the finest you will find in the entire world, and I have traveled quite extensively. The water is warm and of a beautiful color, while the diving in various local areas is excellent---Also a great area for surfing. The views of the mountains and ocean are incredible. And of course, we must not forget the fantastic fishing. The Mexican government has provided and is maintaining fish sanctuaries to help the propagation of the fish population. Fishing is an important resource here. All in all, there is no better place to be…
Oops, I forgot about the golf courses and night life...the best !!
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
For all you Angler’s out there, this is a fantastic place for you to stay and fish. We have provided a ‘Food Saver’ (bring your own plastic bags) and a large capacity Freezer for your fishing needs. The Panga boats are just below Palapas (see aerial photo of Marina) for world-class sport fishing!
Not to mention also the best surfing, water sports and ideal for various kinds of retreats.
