Home away from Home
Home away from Home
We've stayed here nearly every year over the past 10 or 12 years, normally for the months of February and March, so obviously we must like it. We've had a good relationship with the owner who has been very helpful and responsive to any maintenance requirements or scheduling needs that have occurred. This is a home that is in a residential area a couple blocks off the beach in Kekaha which is a small community away from the tourist areas of the Island. It is very comfortable, clean, and well supplied with everything you need for your stay, including various beach toys and chairs. It is not fancy but it is quaint and the landscaping is very nice. One drawback may be the location since the driving distance required to get to the tourist amenities takes some time. The traffic conditions in some locations on the Island are bad at times so too much driving can get old. The neighborhood is generally quiet except on the weekends, the locals love their weekends and their music. Over the past 10 years, the sand on Kekaha Beach has slowly eroded away and a good portion of it is gone. What is left is still just a short walk away so we still enjoy it. The area has several beaches close by and the Waimea Canyon with all its hiking trails are just up the road. We love our home away from home and feel very fortunate that we've been able to have had all of our aloha experiences. We will be back again this winter and we hope to keep coming back for many years to come.

The photos don't do this Hale justice! The home is authentically furnished in the aloha style. The bathroom is clean & well kept. The grounds are beautifully kept, and contain many fragrant plumeria trees, tropical flowers, two mango trees and a coconut tree. Our stay (honeymoon) was arranged on very short notice, and the owner couldn't have been more gracious or easy to work with. We enjoyed it so much we extended our stay by a week! We wanted to stay on the local side of the island, both to get a sense of the low-key Kauai lifestyle, and for the sunny, dry weather and access to the long coastline of uninterrupted beach as well as Kokee State Park. The famous Polihale Beach State Park is a 15 minute drive. Walking to the sunset was a special treat. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner's son, who was gracious and accommodating and even provided bicycles for us to enjoy. The house has beach chairs, umbrellas, a hammock, an outdoor dining option, laundry, and most kitchen utensils you can think of, as well as extra sunscreen and all the little things you might not remember until you're there. The mango trees were fruiting while we were there - we especially loved having an abundance of delicious freshly picked mangos to enjoy. Overall, we loved our time at the Hale, and hope to return one day soon.

We returned to Hawaii for our 35th wedding anniversary, and selected the Aloha Plantation Hale in Kekaha for our first stay. Its location provided easy access to the villages of Waimea, Eleele and Port Allen, to Waimea Canyon and Polihale State Park, and to Kekaha Beach which was walking distance from the cottage. The hale has a nice layout and a small but picturesque and well maintained yard with fruit trees and flowers. A number of useful amenities were available, including beach chairs and umbrellas. We found the cottage to be very warm, which was expected along the drier southwest coast of Kauai, however a lack of curtains in the kitchen created oven-like conditions with direct sun in the late afternoon. We encountered a number of maintenance issues with the hale which we itemized in writing for the owner, issues such as a non-working smoke detector in the master bedroom, intermittent lights, and a washing machine that functioned but clearly required maintenance or repair. We had been asked to lock the windows upon our departure, however most of the locks on the jalousie windows were either missing or nonfunctional. The owner of the hale lives in California and therefore relies on local individuals for repairs and maintenance. With the rental owner off island, it seems logical and appropriate that the owner’s local representative make contact with guests, answer any questions they may have, and most of all make them feel welcome. We never met either the owner or the designated local maintenance individual. All of our communications with the owner were via email and in a couple cases voicemail messages, and we only spoke once briefly with the local individual when she called us the night we departed to ask us to leave the back door unlocked. Our stay was still very pleasant owing mostly to the considerable charms of Kauai’s south coast, however were we to return to the island we would likely stay in a different vacation rental.

A wonderful get away.
A wonderful get away.
We loved the old-timey feel of the nicely restored house, and appreciated the well-equipped kitchen with lots of amenities. The house was just a few short blocks to the Waimea Canyon road (hwy 552) which suited our needs perfectly. Our stay was arranged on very short notice, and the owners were a pleasure to work with in making this happen. Although the house if only 2 short blocks to the beach....the beach at this point is actually a seawall, recently installed to protect the road. The beach is just a few more minutes down the road. We enjoyed our stay and would like to stay again. Thank you.
