Just a few miles as the crow flies from Abiquiu, Cañones is an untouched hamlet at the end of a county road and at the mouth of a deep canyon.

Just over two miles into the canyon the Cañoncito Seco, a spring-fed creek (not dry at all) descends from high up on Polvadera Peak and flows into Cañones Creek. There, our Cañoncito Creek Retreat is a most comfortable location from which to explore large parts of Santa Fe National Forest. Or just to rest and relax.

The Retreat is a hideaway deep in the canyon surrounded by impressive mesas. No traffic can be heard or seen, privacy and peace are absolute.
Large herds of elk and wild turkey can be met on the few explored trails. Or even better, you cut your own trail through this spectacular wilderness. Abiquiu Lake, the Chama River Wilderness, Ghost Ranch are just a short (but sensational) drive away. Fish in the creek, search for wild mushrooms, collect colorful stones.

Lovely private romantic get-away

Guest: Joe and Jill (Denver)
Date of Stay: 10/15/11 Review Submitted: 10/22/11

Our stay at Canoncito was delightful. Hiking everyday in the national forest -just by walking out the front door! We did not see one other hiker for our entire 5 night stay. The home is beautiful. Sitting by the south windows reading a book was a delight. The decks offered spectacular views, especially the mbdrm- where we saw the golden trees and the rocky mountain crag directly in front of us. It was a comfort to know the caretakers were down the road- not visible- but in case we needed anything. The property was accurately described, well kept, clean and we would definitely recommend to others. The only difference we found was the time it took to drive to attractions... at least 45" more than expected because of the remote canyon roads. And be prepared to drive at least 30" for cell service!

Beautiful Year-round Retreat

Guest: Tom (Upstate New York)
Date of Stay: 01/03/11 Review Submitted: 07/31/11

My wife and I stayed in this well designed and beautifully located home for about three months during the winter and early spring. We enjoyed our time immensely. The property and surrounding national forest are laced with walking trails, ranging from quite easy to moderately difficult. The house's south-facing windows provide a panoramic view of canyon walls, buttes, and a tree-lined creek. The sun pours through these windows in the winter months, heating the tile floors that warm the house into the evening. During the night, we relied on a pellet stove to heat the entire house. We did not need to use the electric baseboard heaters, but were glad to have them as a backup. As spring arrived, we were able to spend hours on the two second-floor balconies, one of which puts you just feet from some trees and the beautiful birds of northern New Mexico. We could not use our Verizon cell phones, but the house does have a landline and reasonably reliable DSL. The house is about thirty minutes from the nearest general store and gas station. Perhaps half of that time is spent on fairly well maintained gravel roads; the rest is blacktop. The gravel roads would almost certainly be passable in any weather with a front-wheel drive vehicle. Our four-wheel drive SUV had no trouble with them, even when it snowed.

We really enjoyed our stay at your spectacular home in the mountains.  It was comfortable and beautiful.  We felt like we were backpacking but with all the comforts of modern life, running water, electricity, and the Internet...We were amazed by the beauty of the mountain forest just minutes away from the desert landscape of Abiquiu.

What a peace of solitude. Breaktaking surroundings, top of the line kitchen, decks everywhere. Felt like we were on our own personal journey. Being able to take our dogs was huge, the loved running through the creek. Thanks for sharing this retreat with others

Peace, quiet, seclusion

Guest: Satisfied Ones (Port Byron, IL USA)
Date of Stay: 06/07/10 Review Submitted: 09/19/10

We were looking for peace and quiet with great amenities. We found it all at Canones Creek Retreat. The second morning we were there a bear came cruising through the yard. The hummingbirds were delightful and the stars at night seemed bigger than the usual midwestern variety. All you could hear were the breeze through the trees and the birds singing. Thank you for a wonderful stay at Canones Creek Retreat. We're planning on coming back in 2011. We highly recommend this place. ><>

Canoncito Creek house

Guest: Walter (Maryland, USA)
Date of Stay: 03/30/10 Review Submitted: 08/28/10

Beautiful and wonderfully equipped house, great location. We came for three nights after spending three days in Santa Fe. There was plenty of room for the four of us (two adults, two teenage daughters). We certainly appreciated the well provisioned kitchen. It was an excellent spot for hiking and exploring the region. We will return for a longer visit next time.
