Accommodations:  House, 3 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 2 Baths (Sleeps 6)

Keywords:  House

Spacious rooms with many windows and huge surrounding lanai create a relaxed and refreshing atmosphere in this lovely retreat known locally as "Cedar House." The house was designed with two completely separate apartments, one on each floor. You can reserve the entire house with 5 bedrooms, 2 kitchens, 4 baths; or reserve just one apartment, i.e. the entirety of one floor.

The garden apartment on ground floor offers three bedrooms, private surrounding lanai, and immediate access to the carefully tended yard. The balcony apartment on second floor offers two bedrooms brushed by gentle tradewinds and colorful views of plumeria, bougainvillea, hibiscus and coconut palms. Each apartment has two bathrooms (both tub and shower), a fully equipped kitchen, private laundry facilities, DVD and wide-screen satellite TV, reliable high-speed internet, king-size bed, and additional bedroom(s) with queen-size bed(s). There's off-street parking for your car.

A five-minute stroll takes you from your Cedar House lanai to the friendly tidepools of Wai'Opae Marine Conservation District, where you can snorkel in coral gardens with curious turtles and tropical fish. Explore the quiet roads of Vacationland (that's really its name) and neighboring orchid farms. Or wander down Red Road to soak in the geo-thermally heated, spring-fed oceanside pool at Ahalanui Park about a mile away. Continue south from there along Hawaii's newest gorgeous coastline, and there's a chance (Hawaiian goddess Pele permitting) you'll see red-hot lava flowing into the sea near Kalapana. Stop along the way to walk among the ironwood trees on spectacular bluffs above wild waves at MacKenzie Park. Or sun-bathe with the locals in the cozy atmosphere of Kehena's clothing-optional black sand beach.

Then check out the shops and fine restaurants (Thai, French, Italian, among others) in Pahoa town, eight miles inland from Cedar House and on the other side of Lava Tree State Park. If it's Sunday, you might want to see what's happening at Maku'u Farmers' Market nearby. You'll find fresh vegetables and fruit with lots of local color there.

Within easy driving distance (30 miles north) remember the historic old town of Hilo with its antique stores, restaurants, university lecture series, concerts, state-of-the-art planetarium, and more. At the planetarium you can see how ancient Polynesians used their knowledge of the heavens to navigate the uncharted Pacific (travelling to and from Tahiti for centuries before European sailing ships arrived). Associated displays of on-going volcanic activity show how these islands were formed in the first place. Relax or picnic in the peaceful parks near Hilo's harbor, where downtown streets were inundated a generation ago by tidal waves memorialized now in the Pacific Tsunami Museum.

An hour's drive south along Hawaii Belt Route 11 takes you to the most active volcano on earth, in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Visit the Kilauea Volcano Caldera, Thurston Lava Tube, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, or hike the many trails through protected wilderness. In another direction, you might find yourself looking at the snow-capped peaks of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea rising nearly 14,000 feet above sea level (elevations comparable to the Colorado rockies) and more than 30,000 feet above the ocean floor. From there it's an easy drive back to your Vacationland retreat.

Cedar House at Wai'Opae Tide Pools - Stunning

Torontonians on the Big Isle with friends from Oahu

The four of us (two couples) shared the upper level of the house for four nights. We had a wonderful time snorkeling near by and touring the sites. The house was extremely comfortable for the four of us - we loved the large covered porch and were really happy we were in the upper level during some heavy night rains. The large open kitchen/living area was terrific - sunny and large. The cupboards were full of those extras that you don't always want to buy while in a place for four nights. The laundry facilities were a plus. The listing description was accurate and the photos accurately reflected the rental's appearance and amenities. The property was clean and well-maintained and the owner was very helpful in answering all of our questions and concerns. We would recommend this property to friends and relatives. Overall - a fabulous experience.

I can NOT begin to say enough good things about Johnene and this house. It was all I could do to force myself to leave the keys behind and not stay there forever. The house is fantastic. So spacious and inviting. The Lanai was the best place to sit out and relax watching day geckos and a wonderful little white odd-eyed kitty visitor. A very short walk to some of the most beautiful tide pools I've experienced and so well equipped with cooking supplies, it's your own fault if you can't cook in that house. Many guests have left supplies behind (in excellent condition) for others to use which I think is very nice. We too left some consumables behind for the next guest and can't wait to come back and stay here again, next time with friends so they can experience such a lovely retreat!

Huge, gorgeous, relaxing vacation home.

What a fantastic place. We stayed here for several days in September 2010 as part of an island tour. This was a great spot to stay if you want to experience the East Island. We saw the area where the lava enters the ocean at sunset (don't miss!) as well as exploring the national park. We also drove to the visitor's center near the top of Mauna Kea to see the stars. We LOVED this house; while there is not an ocean view, it is a block away. Very private. Great walking in the neighborhood with interesting people-watching. Safe neighborhood. FANTASTIC snorkeling, one of the best spots on the island. Saw a Moray eel. I have never stayed at a rental house that I liked more; beautiful wood interior, kitchen outfitted to prepare anything. Very clean. When we are on vacation, it is important to us to have beautiful surroundings and I don't believe we could have found a better place. Beds very comfortable with a King bed (hard to find), huge outdoor sitting areas with tables, friendly neighbors but not intrusive, just helpful. Large bathrooms, beautiful tile, gorgeous colors. The downstairs is rented separately and there were renters there for one day. We saw their car in the parking lot and heard distant voices out the window but other than that we never saw or heard them! Great laundry facilities with outdoor covered clothesline. Huge high ceilings in the house, skylights. TV with many channels but we were so busy relaxing hand having fun that we never used it. The kitchen features were important; we follow a special diet and must prepare most of our own food. I was amazed it was so well-stocked with pans and utensils. Can't recommend this home highly enough.

I know you arranged with our son Jeremy for our Xmas rental at the Cedar House, but I just came across your email address in one of his letters to us and just have to write you about our lovely stay. It was wonderfully low key and so so beautiful there I hardly felt like leaving at all, sitting atop that gorgeous foliage listening to the Trade Winds was so peaceful. Unfortunately my husband became sick with a fever for 3 of the 5 days but he felt so soothed and relaxed sleeping and getting well at the house as Jeremy and I went exploring for the day. I was pleased there were a few provisions at the house, like rice ( I know there were a few more, like herbs etc.) which we hadn't bought. I hope you saw the article about Hawaii, the big island, in the New York Times, Escapes Section pg. C 35, on Friday Jan. 15. It was a memorable trip and we so enjoyed our stay at the comfortable Cedar House over Christmas. Thank you, thank you. Best, Liz & Michael

This is "da kine" place to stay on big island! We stayed at two other places while visiting there and this was by far, out favorite place. The attention to detail and the location is unsurpassed! It is just a short lovely walk to the tide pools from here. The huge lanai with the BBQ was the place of many memorable meals for us. We highly recommend it.

Enjoyed 3 nite (Jan 4-6/2010)stay in this quality 2 bdrm unit. Cedar walls & vaulted ceilings reminded us of BC coastal home construction. After 7 nites in downtown Kailua/Kona this was most relaxing & peaceful change. Will certainly return to this unit.
