Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2005

I am a child psychotherapist in the public schools in Chicago in the winter, and a Black Hills resident in the summer.

Why the Owner Chose Nemo

I grew up in the Black Hills and left there, restless to see the world, when I graduated high school--couldn't wait to leave. Now that a few decades have passed, I cannot wait to retire and get back for good.

The Unique Benefits of this Cabin

I have a very busy time of it when I can get out there. It takes a lot of energy to walk the woods and peaks with my dog, look out back to see if the bachelor elk is coming by, pick up fossils, watch the sunset from Custer Peak, lie on my back in an innertube, and meditate on the front lawn. When friends visit, we go to Deadwood, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and ride the 1880 train. The Warrior's Work gallery in Hill city is amazing, and Prairie Edge store and museum in Rapid in remarkable. Custer State Park is un-missable, and the rock shops and antiquing are wonderful. Come on by!

Great week!

Guest: Bo (California)
Date of Stay: 09/26/11 Review Submitted: 10/19/11

Two couples ( sister's) spent a week and enjoyed every minute. The kitchen was well equipped and roomy for 2 chefs. WE had cocktails on the deck and watched the starry nights. It is isolated from traffic and city lights. We had long walks and fished in a nearby pond. All Black Hills sights are within an hors drive. A special treat was the fall colors in Spearfish canyon. The house was nicely decorated and clean.

A+++

We could not have been happier with our stay at Shady Grove. Carol and Lin welcomed us and shared their knowledge of the area, music, friendship and pie!! The home is well stocked, perfectly maintained, and even more lovely than the pictures portray. We rented motorcycles to tour the Black Hills and this was a perfect location from which to see everything from the Badlands National Park, to Sturgis, to Custer State Park, and Devil's Tower in Wyoming. A special thank you to Carol for shopping for us and stocking the fridge. We'd highly recommend this property.

Wonderful place to stay, the pictures don't lie! This was our first VBRO and the bar has been set high! Carol and Lin are wonderful hosts. They gave us suggestions as to what too see and shared with us some delightful off the beaten path spots. Would highly recommend Shady Grove.

Family Time at Shady Grove

Guest: Al, Lori & Nikki (Chicago, IL)
Date of Stay: 06/25/11 Review Submitted: 07/01/11

Our stay at Shady Grove was relaxing, soothing, and comfortable. Shady Grove provided our family with all the essentials, as any home away from home could provide. We loved the spacious living room, the soft beds, and the full kitchen. The blanket of stars in the night made these city dwellers fans of the mountain's sky. Aside from the beautiful cabin, the Black Hills were full of history and natural splendor. Overall, our stay at Shady Grove was spectacular. :)

Best of the Best

Guest: Pete (Burnsville, N.C.)
Date of Stay: 06/24/10 Review Submitted: 09/06/10

My wife and I have visited the Black Hills at least 6 times in the last 15 years, but this was the very best experience of the times we have been there. The facility was much more than we expected. There was not a thing that you might need that was not at your fingertips. The decor was obviously planned with much thought and concern. The Hosts made our visit one to remember. They showed us places that most visitors may not know about. We visited a Sunday afternoon event of many local musicians, which played for about 4 hours at a very unique establishment that goes beyond description. We are planning on going back and have mentioned this place to several friends.

Family Vacation

Date of Stay: 07/23/10 Review Submitted: 08/24/10

Our family would like to highly recommend this property! The home was very clean and comfortable. It was perfect for our family of 5 for a long weekend! Carol was very helpful with suggestions on what to see in the area, since it was our first time to the Black Hills. There is so much to explore in the Black Hills area. . . I'm sure we'll be back for a longer vacation next time. When we do come back, we'll stay at Carol's place!

Date of Stay: 07/26/10 Review Submitted: 08/15/10

We had a wonderful stay at Shady Grove. We found the home comfortable, clean and welcoming. The Paha Sapa (Black Hills) is wakan (sacred) and a reminder of the beauty that maka ina (mother earth) shares with us. We valued the peace, calm and privacy. Carol and Lin, Lila Wopila Tonka( a big thank you) for sharing your home, food, spirit and song with us. We plan on returning next summer with our son, his wife and our beautiful granddaughter. Toska ake (goodbye and take care)

cabin in the woods

Guest: Harley Rider (2532 Drum Road,Middleport, NY 14105)
Date of Stay: 08/01/10 Review Submitted: 08/14/10

We loved the cabin !! It had lots of room and made us feel at home. There was alot to see and the house was located in a great area. The description, photos and the maintance of the house was excellent very clean and well kept. The owner was more than helpful. I would highly recommend the property to everyone. We did six different motorcyle rides and put over 1100 miles on our bikes. Our 30ft RV fit right along side of the house and we left our trailor at the bottom of driveway in a turn off area. Some of us went for walks every morning, other got on their bikes and rode. There is something for everyone.

"Finding Nemo!"

Guest: Mee Mee (Fargo ND)
Date of Stay: 06/14/10 Review Submitted: 06/24/10

I stayed at Shady Grove with 3 friends, and this cabin was perfect for us. We found it beautiful and a nice place to come back to each night at the end of our long days in the black hills. We enjoyed cooking breakfast and supper each night. Carol was very easy to work with, she was very good about responding to emails and answering any questions we had. We would love to return in the future. Greatly exceeded our expectations!
