The property is lovely and so peaceful, the suite is very comfortable and beautifully finished ( the pics don't do it justice ) We loved the location, so close to the Pololu Valley and wonderful little towns of Kapa au and Hawi where we stopped each day for a Tropical Dreams ice cream. We found the location perfect for day trips to either side of the island. Would like to recommend trying Cafe Pesto in either Hilo or Kawaihae for fresh local fare and some of the best Thai food we have ever had outside of Thailand at Krua in Kona or the Thai Smile truck at the Farmers Market in Hilo. We've travelled the world and had allot of massages but the best we have ever had was with Kim Le Cates, LMT in Hilo. Would also like to add that the owner of this property made everything about this stay easy and comfortable. We would definately recommend the property.

You will not even BELIEVE this place. As a North Kohala resident for many years, I wish I'd known about this little slice of heaven. Coming back to Kapa'au, I can think of no better place to stay. I give this my absolute BEST rating. The architectural details were exquisite, the furniture and decorations felt like a home - definitely not rental quality. We felt like ohana. The soul of the 'aina is alive and well in Makapala. Mahalo!

I have been to Hawaii four times and this place was better than ANY other I have ever stayed. For those of you who don't like the "resort scene" and want to LIVE in Hawaii, this place can't be beat! Everything was very personalized. It was located in a small town on the northern tip of the Big Island. The Bamboo Suite has a spacious lanai with a beautiful peekaboo view of the ocean and surrounding vegetation. It was so quiet we could hear the surf. The sound of the birds in the morning gave a delicious "tropical" feeling. The two small towns, Hawi and Kapa'au, were delightful to wander through, and we especially enjoyed Lukes as a place to eat. The one bed, one bath (with an extra outside shower to wash off sand from the beach) was just right for a couple (although a hideabed made it possible for guests and visitors). The room was beautifully-finished in koa and monkeypod. The kitchen facilities were very adequate for a couple. Mike, the "keeper" was next door, and was very friendly and glad to answer any questions (he presented us with two lucious grapefruit one morning!); he was helpful and available without being intrusive. Everything was clean and well-maintained. Towels, snorkling gear and a barbecue were provided. The washer/dryer was especially appreciated, as it allowed us to cut our "clothes bringing" in half! Although off the beaten track, the property is just a little over an hour from Kona and a half hour or less from some nice beaches. The North Kohala Road (to Waimea) is nearby as is the Pololu Valley. Both are beautiful drives, even on a cloudy day. I would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting a true Hawaiian experience! We definitely plan on coming back!

My husband and I recently stayed 4 nights in this suite and it was as it is stated. The furniture has since been rearranged and there was some missing lanai furniture but it was not a problem for us! It was VERY clean and I would recommend this to anyone staying on the northern part of the island! Women: Be warned, there are no curtains on any windows and while it is tucked away and no neighbors, it is still a bit disconcerting at times...and there is not a hair dryer, so be sure to bring one...as the nearest town that carries one is in Waimea about 30 + minutes away! :-) The property is beautiful and well kept. It was very quiet and relaxing! I hope to some day return! We would definitely stay there again! Mahalo!

My husband & I stayed here for a week in March 2010 and had an exceptionally relaxing vacation because of it. Though a studio, it's spacious & airy with high ceilings and beautiful light. The furnishings are very comfortable; a nice mix of contemporary asian, artsy & metro. Lots of lovely materials & attention to detail -- a shower wall of river pebbles, beautiful wood trim throughout & nice wooden floors. Bathroom was large (nice soap & towels); outdoor shower was a lot of fun; lanai is large & great for bird action, geckos & tropical plants; kitchen is minimal, as described, but workable & stocked with the necessities. It would be great to rent the larger house too (connected by a big screen TV room with about 100 dvd's) with a larger group -- the studio is only for two max & with minimal stairs, it would work well for my elderly parents. This place feels off the beaten path, behind an old charming church off a dirt road, even beyond the north coast towns -- because of that, it feels like an old fashioned paradise. We'll be back!

What a fantastic place! There were 9 of us all together and we rented all 3 of your homes. My boyfriend & I stayed in this suite & it was perfect! After enjoying everyones company, we would then retreat to this private suite. We had everything we needed (well stocked kitchenette; beach towels; beach chairs). Especially loved the outdoor shower. We loved falling asleep with the doors open so we could listen to the palms sway in the wind (something we could not have experienced while staying at a hotel). The home was so comfortable in that it felt like a home away from home. We will definitely be back, whether it's 9+/- or just the 2 of us.
