Unique place. Very close to restaurants and the beach. Too bad the weather was not warm enough for us to go out to the beach! I would recommend this place.

Four generations of my family recently vacationed at the Down Maine cottage. Our ages ranged from newborn(two months) to age 86. All family members thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance of this beach retreat! We were impressed with the decor, cleanliness of the rooms, and all the amenities that the owner offered us-- Thank you, Bob! The porch was an especially popular space for us, including the baby. The rocking chairs were relaxing... Even though we were not located right at the beach, we enjoyed the quiet neighborhood! The cottage is really charming. It is beautifully decorated and very well kept up. We enjoyed being in it very much. The distance to the beach was as described, about a 10 or 15 minute walk. We alternated walking and driving, depending on how much we were taking down. There were two reasons we would not rate our experience as excellent. The first, trouble with the internet connection, has presumably been resolved. We were not really able to get wireless for the first few days, but Bob was very attentive about getting it fixed and by wednesday we were up and running. I don't think that will be a problem for future renters. The second, is harder to fix. The neighborhood seems to be mostly full of residents, not renters, which has it's charms but also it's problems. We were often woken up very early in the morning by lawnmowers, and other various workers. If you are an early riser, or a heavy sleeper, this should not really be a problem. Overall, it was a very nice vacation experience. The cottage itself, and Bob, could not be beat (though it needs a lobster pot!) It was close to all of the action down at the beach, but far from the crowds. We would highly recommend it to anyone who likes cottage charm and a fun place to vacation.

Owner response: We are so glad that your overall experience at the DOWN MAINE was a good one. We try to do everything in our power to insure a pleasant stay. The wireless router was replaced as soon as we could get the cable company to do it.....Unfortunately Time Warner Cable does not offer same day service. In terms of the morning mowers, in the 5 years we Summered in the cottage the neighbors were always considerate and never attempted yard wok before 9AM (not sure what you consider "early"). The stolen lobster pot has been replaced.....didn't realize it was missing......thanks for letting us know. Thanks for the great review!

My boyfriend, my pup, and loved our stay at the cottage. Truly felt like our home away from home for the week. Bob, the owner, was fantastic and met us exactly when he said he would. He was so kind and truly cared about our stay. The cottage bedrooms are so cute and have that new england / beach / cottage warmth... but they are also bright and cool with modern overhead fans. The upstairs bathroom was gorgeous and I loved the tub/shower and windows (but my boyfriend preferred the modern shower downstairs - to each his own!) There sure is something to make everyone happy here. We were blessed with a few sunny days at the end of our vacation, but were able to get through the rain in our cozy home for the week with the help of cards and some fun games of American Idol Monopoly! ;0) - thank you Bob!

I will admit - we didn't end up spending much time at Old Orchard Beach, but this Down Maine cottage was a great jumping point to all parts of Maine. The cottage was so lovely; a beautifully decorated haven. I loved all the gorgeous exposed wood! And the owner was very friendly, very helpful - met us on our first day to walk through the house; and came over to help us when a small situation arose. The bedrooms are very comfortable; the kitchen well-equipped. The bathrooms (and the clawfoot tub upstairs) were very relaxing and newly updated! We'll definitely be planning a trip back.

Recommended for: Girls getaway, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children.

This was my first experience renting a cottage. I have been going to Old Orchard Beach every summer since I was born - and would usually stay at an oceanfront hotel. I decided to rent a cottage after adopting a dog. The only way to describe the Down Maine cottage is: absolutely perfect. Both the outside and inside are so well cared for. It really felt like home away from home. This cottage has everything you would need. Aside from the gorgeous decor, it offers books to read, pots & pans, a washer & dryer and grill. I stayed during the last week in july -so it was very warm out. There is not an air conditioner, however, there are 5 ceiling fans. The ceiling fans kept the place so cool that I would actually ocassionally turn them off. The cottage is located in a beautiful, quiet neighborhood. I always felt relaxed and safe. There is no question, I will definitely be staying at the Down Maine again next year!

Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, pet owners, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, sightseeing.
