Location: Paris Arrondissement 18, Paris, Ile-de-France (Paris Area), France, Europe
Accommodations: Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-4)
Keywords: Apartment
The apartment is on the second floor of an elegant early 20th century building on rue du Mont Cenis which begins behind Sacre Coeur and descends to Place Jules Joffrin. There's only a slight incline at our address. Area residents are a mix of young families, professionals and retirees which creates the atmosphere of a village within Montmartre. Streets are lined with small bakeries, restaurants, artisan shops along with elementary schools and storefront theatres. The excellent market street on rue du Poteau is a five minute walk as is Place Jules Joffrin Metro station (line 12) that will take you to Place de la Concorde in 15 minutes. The Marche aux Puces is 15 minutes away on foot or by Metro. The Bascilica of Sacre Coeur is a 10 minute walk in the other direction, uphill.
The apartment is accessible through two doors with codes and stairs or elevator. A French door in the bedroom opens onto a small terrace facing rue du Mont Cenis. Several other windows in the living, dining and kitchen areas look out over a beautifully maintained and luminous inner courtyard. The decor of the space combines contemporary white walls, built-in furniture and recessed lighting with the original hardwood floors and beautiful ceiling molding. The new kitchen is open to a large granite-topped island. This is the home away from home in Paris you've dreamed of.

Wonderful time--like living in Paris

We had a wonderful time staying here; it was like having our own home in a charming Paris neighborhood. The building is a classic Parisian style, with multiple stories and a (tiny) elevator. The apartment is a moderate-sized one-bedroom, with a living room with pocket doors and a fold-out couch that can be made to serve as a second bedroom. Windows open on the street and a charming courtyard. The kitchen is small, but very functional, with a rangetop in a granite island that doubles as a dining table. The washer-dryer is slow and small, but welcome on a long trip. Wireless internet is available, too, but a bit tricky to get set up. The neighborhood is charming--the "back" side of Montmartre--and a climb up the street (and stairs that follow) brings you to Sacre Coeur and the Place du Tertre, the touristy hangout nearby at the top of the hill. Check out St.-Pierre-de-Montmartre, a 12th century church adjacent to Sacre Coeur that predates it by 700 years. We happened upon a choral concert of Faure when we walked by; beautiful. The nearest Metro stop is at Place Jules Joffrin, about 2 1/2 block down the hill, with shopping, taxis and buses all available. We especially enjoyed dinner at Cafe Coin des Amis, across the street from the apartment, at the corner. The neighbors are friendly, too. One woman took my wife on a tour of the neighborhood, proudly pointing out local landmarks including the Mairie of the 18th Arrondissment, which was "built by our last empress." The property description and photos are a good depiction of the property, and the apartment was clean and well-maintained when we arrived. We highly recommend this property--have already done so to friends and family--and hope to return ourselves before long. One note: Be clear on the difference between the address and the same address number followed by "bis" (which translates, apparently, to something like "and a half") a few doors away (and which is the entry shown if you use Google Streetview). Also, recall that Parisians start counting floors "ground, 1, 2", instead of "1, 2, 3". Our confusion on both counts led to some humorous situations. Fortunately the neighbors are friendly and forgiving of the blundering visitors.
Recommended for:Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, girls getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.
