Calaveras County is best known from Mark Twain's famous story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County". The Jumping Frog Jubilee and Calaveras County Fair is held annually the third week in May. It's also home to many world-class activities and sights including Bear Valley Mountain Resort, Stanislaus River Rafting, Sierra Nevada Fishing and Boating, Big Trees State Park, Columbia State Park, Stanislaus National Forest, some of the best Panning for Gold in California, and numerous California Vineyards and Breweries.
The Angels Camp Museum is filled with lovingly preserved artifacts from the Gold Rush era and several fascinating outdoor exhibits, including a collection of mining equipment, a blacksmith's shop and a unique carriage house.
There are numerous Gold Rush towns in the area that have unique shops. Downtown Murphy's (10-minutes) there are numerous unique gift shops including a kitchen specialty store, candy store, toy store, animal store, and 8 restaurants within walking distance. Murphy's is also well known for it's 12 wine tasting rooms within a 10-minute walk and don’t miss Ironstone Vineyards for great wine tasting and a leisure stroll around their immaculate gardens. Other area towns include Jackson (35-minutes), Mokelumne Hill (20-minutes), Sonora (25-minutes), and Sutter Creek (40-minutes).
The uncountable attractions of winter include first class downhill skiing at Bear Valley Mountain Resort. There you will enjoy many excellent cross country trails offering silent, pristine scenes of winter wonder and miles of snowmobiling from two-hour to all-day tours around the village or through the woods.
