Location: Dobson, Heartland, North Carolina, USA (The Cabin is Within 20 Minutes of Fancy Gap) View Map

Accommodations:  Cabin, 2 Bedrooms + Detached Unit, 2 Baths (Sleeps 8)

Keywords:  Log Cabin

This cabin was built from old tobacco barns and is authentic as they come while having all of the amenities of home!

You truly must see it to believe it. It is very secluded, with only one other resident on the road and sitting on almost 4 acres. No one lives on either side. It is a heavily wooded property so be aware of all that could include (reptiles, furry animals, insects, etc...).

There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms inside the cabin. A full kitchen and wonderful "living area" are separated by a beautiful stone fireplace with a wood burner on one side and a wood stove on the other.

There is also a separate cabin that sleeps two and is akin to a studio apartment. There is not a bathroom in that cabin and it is heated using electric heat.

There is a lovely bubbling creek just a short walk through the woods, where you will find a wonderful deck and hammocks or chairs to cozy up in with a good book. It's a great place to truly enjoy nature.

Shelton Vineyards is within 1/2 a mile "as the crow flies", and a short drive from the cabin. It is one of the largest vineyards in the state and has a wonderful restaurant on site. Tours and wine tastings are available as well.

There are many other vineyards located in the "Yadkin Valley" and information is readily available online. Go to Yadkin Valley Wine Trail (online),to find anything you could possibly need to know about wine in NC.

The final stretch of road (approx 1/4 mile), leading to the cabin is bumpy but certainly passable, even in rainy weather. This property is located in a heavily wooded area. You are likely to see animals/rodents/insects unique to a heavily wooded area. If you are not "into" the woods because of a fear or discomfort of these types of encounters, this may not be the place for you! Those who have a love of the outdoors and all that comes with it are a perfect fit!

All part of the rustic/back to nature features of this charming cabin!

Secluded Log Cabin in the Heart of Wine Country ~NC-Va~ Line

Year Purchased: 2006

Why the Owner Chose Dobson

I describe the cabin as being at the "top" of the foothills. You can see mountain ranges all around, but it is still very convenient from the Piedmont area to get to. Less than 2 hours. The first time I saw the cabin I knew I had to have it. It's authentic, secluded, and a corner of the property borders Shelton Vineyards property. There are vineyards all around and I enjoy visiting them and participating in many of the special events that are offered year 'round.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin

When I'm at the cabin all of the weight of the world disappears. It is peaceful and serene. I call the cabin my "slice of heaven". The creek is a short walk down a well marked path through the woods. I have built a deck by the creek and hammocks are available to swing on while listening to the creek and reading a good book. Napping in the hammock is hard to resist!

A
Shelton Vineyards

One of the largest vineyards in the state. Tours, tastings, summer concert series, etc. Less than a mile from the cabin!

Owner's Map of Dobson

I am a business owner of a recycling company in the Piedmont section of the state. I work hard and when I need a break, I head north to Dobson. I can't wait for others to enjoy the cabin as much as I have, since purchasing it in 2006.

girls get-away

Date of Stay: 08/25/11 Review Submitted: 01/19/12

hard to locate, 'drive' very rough & ran along corn row of a farm; signage was small & poorly marked; it was clean enough; yes, true - snake skins inside as well as newly shed outside; upstairs shower leaked through to the living room - ugh.... put towels down & pail, etc. Came to enjoy the vineyard tours, which we did.

Owner response:From Susan Newman (owner), I try to give very explicit directions as the cabin is very isolated. This is the first complaint I've ever recieved about it being hard to locate though. I am enclosing and excerpt from this renter's response to me in a follow up shortly after her visit. You will see it portrays quite a different experience than this review, only posted recently, 6 months after the visit to the cabin. This review was apparently posted by my contact's mother, who apparently was with her when she rented the cabin. This is part of the email from my contact shortly after the cabin visit: ____________________________________________________________ "No, the leak was not a big deal to us, we just figured that you would want to know (if you didn't already, which you did). If I am the only renter that you have had who has given you that feedback, then perhaps it doesn't even register with most people. My family has a background in construction, so it is entirely possible that I tend to see things like that when others don't. The collection of snakeskins was quite interesting, and we actually added a new snakeskin to the collection. Found it in the bushes. Yikes!!! Again, thank you for sharing. We will remember your property the next time we come to the area. Please let me know if you found anything amiss in the cabin, otherwise, I'll look forward to receiving the deposit back shortly. I will be happy to leave feedback. Once again, thank you and we wish you well!" _____________________________________________________________ I take it very personally, recieving a negative review, as you can see, this is the only one I've ever gotten. Nothing less than 5 stars up until this point. I hope my response has helped you understand the situation and I welcome inquiries to the cabin! Sincerely, Susan Newman

Sweet Cabin with lots of nostalgia

Guest: chris (Concord, NC)
Date of Stay: 10/13/11 Review Submitted: 12/09/11

My husband, myself and our very dear friends rented this cabin for an extended weekend. We were going to the Wine Festival in Yadkinville (great fun, by the way). We also went to Mount Airy one day for a fall festival. Oct. is a great time to visit Dobson, many activities and beautiful leaves. The cabin was full of all the things we remember our great grandmothers, maybe even our grandmothers using. We took pictures by the old fashioned wash bowl out front, by the outhouse, yes outhouse, pictures by the old wood burning stove in the kitchen, The cabin is full of nostalgia and still has all the amenities you will need. Be sure to take a walk out to the little deck by the stream, if you are there at the right time you will see the horses across the stream. The porch at the back of the house is so nice for enjoying the leaves, enjoying a glass of wine and talking with your best friends. The fireplace in the house is warm and cozy, even if you play cards all night and still fail to win one game!! Susan is a wonderful owner, answered my many questions, she was a dream to work with. This is a fun cabin to rent, anyone would enjoy it, we sure did.

Owner response:Thanks Lois. So glad you enjoyed your time at the cabin. You were there at a great time of year. Hope to see you back! Susan

This is the second year that we have rented the cabin in conjunction with a Shelton Vineyards concert. The cabin is very private and comfortable for as many as 4-6 people with an out cabin that can sleep 2 more. Cabin is within a mile, tops, of Shelton Vineyards. Very nice!

This is a charming cabin in a remote location. Shelton vineyard is nearby. We danced to the Embers in Mt Airy at an outdoor concert then came home to a tremendous thunderstorm. All very relaxing.

Date of Stay: 10/15/10 Review Submitted: 10/18/10

Wonderful location to visit several wineries. We were able to visit eight wineries with very little driving time. Cabin was clean and well stocked with linens and cooking utensils. Wonderful fireplace for chilly nights. Very quiet and relaxing. Would love to return to hike at Stone Mountain State Park.

The true "cabin in the woods"

Guest: Janet (Gastonia, NC)
Date of Stay: 10/08/10 Review Submitted: 10/14/10

We had a last minute, fun weekend exploring the nearby towns and vineyards. The back porch was the perfect place to solve the world's problems, and our nights of sleep were PEACEFUL. The cabin was well-stocked for cooking, but we also took advantage of a wonderful dinner at Shelton Vineyard and a soda shop lunch in Elkin. Great way to discover small-town NC.

Awesome, Secluded Cabin

Guest: mel (Chapel Hill, NC 27516)
Date of Stay: 09/11/10 Review Submitted: 10/09/10

This was the perfect get-away for a weekend of wine tasting and relaxing for two couples. Very close to Shelton's Vineyard - if you love getting back to nature and avoiding the sterile hotel lifestyle, this is for you. We loved it. Wonderful back porch with swing and rockers, swing out front for the view of a beautiful sunset, and a swing on the front porch too! I wish I could post all of the great pictures I took. The owner has special touches inside and out. Oh, and the trail down to the creek with the awesome deck is incredible. We hope to return with the kids (teens) -- a great cabin in the side yard perfect for two more. (The main cabin will easily sleep 6.) And if you miss the caretaker, you've missed part of the charm. He's such an extra gem to the visit.

Loved the cabin - thanks!

Guest: Martin (Rockville, Maryland)
Date of Stay: 08/06/10 Review Submitted: 08/16/10

Best things about the property are the seclusion and the nice little touches. There is lots of room around the cabin for outdoor games and a lovely porch in back. Minutes from the winery and the town also has some cool shops and nice parks. We appreciated the complementary toiletries, food stuffs, and DVDS/CDS. I've stayed at log cabins before that had weak showers, old appliances, uncomfortable beds but this cabin - though rustic looking - was well equipped.

"Authentic" Log Cabin

Guest: Wine Enthusiast (Kenansville, NC)
Date of Stay: 07/29/10 Review Submitted: 08/03/10

If you want to stay in an authentic log cabin--but with modern amenities--this is it! We spent four days at the cabin, using it as an operations base for touring wineries. Many are very close by. The owner was great to work with, very responsive, and the caretaker "next door" was great, too. There were six of us and the cabin met our needs well. It was secluded, serene, relaxing--just a nice getaway spot. Wineries and other attractions are very convenient to this location. It did rain some, and it was nice to sit on the back porch, watch the rain, and listen to it beating on the tin roof. Try it out--MUCH better than a motel room!
