Love this Cabin ~ Peaceful & Tranquil

Guest: Matt & Karen (Mooresville, NC)
Date of Stay: 05/11/12 Review Submitted: 05/18/12

My husband and I participated in the Shelton Vineyards 10K and we didn't want to stay in a hotel. We were so lucky to find this cabin on VRBO! Susan, the owner, was great to work with for our last minute booking. The cabin had everything we needed as far as supplies, it was clean, it had plenty of room and the cabin is surrounded by trees/forest. Our favorite thing was sitting on the back deck in the rocking chairs! The deck by the creek is nice also. Loved the swing in the big tree by the driveway. We would defintely stay here again!

Owner response:You were wonderful guests Karen. So glad it all worked out. Come again anytime!

The Cabin in the Woods - definitely NOT a horror movie

Guest: Tula (Durham, NC)
Date of Stay: 04/13/12 Review Submitted: 04/20/12

My girlfriend, another couple and I stayed here doing a weekend getaway to North Carolina wine country. In short, it was the perfect setting for some good country eating and a lot of wine tasting. The location was convenient to every place we visited, especially Shelton which is almost in walking distance. From the cabin, we were able to tour Mt. Airy in the morning; taste wines at Old North State, RagApple Lassie, and Shelton Vinyards; and have dinner at Harvest Grill all before sundown. It was nice to then be able to go back to our own piece of seclusion for the remainder of the night. The cabin itself is quite nicely maintained and have all the amenities anyone would want including a fully stocked kitchen. We enjoyed breakfast in and fresh brewed coffee on the back porch both mornings we were there. The beds were quite comfy and we all slept like babies. We didn't get to explore the grounds very much but the scenery from the back porch was suffiecient for creating the peace and tranquility we wanted. If you're visiting Dobson, Elkin and the Yadkin Valley wine region and you want a total respite from the usual hotel stay, this is the place to book. And when you go, be aware of the family of birds (couldn't distinguish what breed they are) nesting in the bush just off the back porch. At the time of our visit it was just momma and eggs, but I'm sure there are babies in there now... singing a pretty song.

Owner response:Thanks Tula. So glad you enjoyed your stay. And that's a dove on the nest (I was by there on Saturday), and she's still sitting on those eggs! Come again anytime!

Sweet Cabin with lots of nostalgia

Guest: chris (Concord, NC)
Date of Stay: 10/13/11 Review Submitted: 12/09/11

My husband, myself and our very dear friends rented this cabin for an extended weekend. We were going to the Wine Festival in Yadkinville (great fun, by the way). We also went to Mount Airy one day for a fall festival. Oct. is a great time to visit Dobson, many activities and beautiful leaves. The cabin was full of all the things we remember our great grandmothers, maybe even our grandmothers using. We took pictures by the old fashioned wash bowl out front, by the outhouse, yes outhouse, pictures by the old wood burning stove in the kitchen, The cabin is full of nostalgia and still has all the amenities you will need. Be sure to take a walk out to the little deck by the stream, if you are there at the right time you will see the horses across the stream. The porch at the back of the house is so nice for enjoying the leaves, enjoying a glass of wine and talking with your best friends. The fireplace in the house is warm and cozy, even if you play cards all night and still fail to win one game!! Susan is a wonderful owner, answered my many questions, she was a dream to work with. This is a fun cabin to rent, anyone would enjoy it, we sure did.

Owner response:Thanks Lois. So glad you enjoyed your time at the cabin. You were there at a great time of year. Hope to see you back! Susan

girls get-away

Guest: 'Mom' (brevard, nc)
Date of Stay: 08/25/11 Review Submitted: 01/19/12

hard to locate, 'drive' very rough & ran along corn row of a farm; signage was small & poorly marked; it was clean enough; yes, true - snake skins inside as well as newly shed outside; upstairs shower leaked through to the living room - ugh.... put towels down & pail, etc. Came to enjoy the vineyard tours, which we did.

Owner response:From Susan Newman (owner), I try to give very explicit directions as the cabin is very isolated. This is the first complaint I've ever recieved about it being hard to locate though. I am enclosing and excerpt from this renter's response to me in a follow up shortly after her visit. You will see it portrays quite a different experience than this review, only posted recently, 6 months after the visit to the cabin. This review was apparently posted by my contact's mother, who apparently was with her when she rented the cabin. This is part of the email from my contact shortly after the cabin visit: ____________________________________________________________ "No, the leak was not a big deal to us, we just figured that you would want to know (if you didn't already, which you did). If I am the only renter that you have had who has given you that feedback, then perhaps it doesn't even register with most people. My family has a background in construction, so it is entirely possible that I tend to see things like that when others don't. The collection of snakeskins was quite interesting, and we actually added a new snakeskin to the collection. Found it in the bushes. Yikes!!! Again, thank you for sharing. We will remember your property the next time we come to the area. Please let me know if you found anything amiss in the cabin, otherwise, I'll look forward to receiving the deposit back shortly. I will be happy to leave feedback. Once again, thank you and we wish you well!" _____________________________________________________________ I take it very personally, recieving a negative review, as you can see, this is the only one I've ever gotten. Nothing less than 5 stars up until this point. I hope my response has helped you understand the situation and I welcome inquiries to the cabin! Sincerely, Susan Newman

This is the second year that we have rented the cabin in conjunction with a Shelton Vineyards concert. The cabin is very private and comfortable for as many as 4-6 people with an out cabin that can sleep 2 more. Cabin is within a mile, tops, of Shelton Vineyards. Very nice!

This is a charming cabin in a remote location. Shelton vineyard is nearby. We danced to the Embers in Mt Airy at an outdoor concert then came home to a tremendous thunderstorm. All very relaxing.

Wonderful location to visit several wineries. We were able to visit eight wineries with very little driving time. Cabin was clean and well stocked with linens and cooking utensils. Wonderful fireplace for chilly nights. Very quiet and relaxing. Would love to return to hike at Stone Mountain State Park.

The true "cabin in the woods"

Guest: Janet (Gastonia, NC)
Date of Stay: 10/08/10 Review Submitted: 10/14/10

We had a last minute, fun weekend exploring the nearby towns and vineyards. The back porch was the perfect place to solve the world's problems, and our nights of sleep were PEACEFUL. The cabin was well-stocked for cooking, but we also took advantage of a wonderful dinner at Shelton Vineyard and a soda shop lunch in Elkin. Great way to discover small-town NC.

This was the perfect get-away for a weekend of wine tasting and relaxing for two couples. Very close to Shelton's Vineyard - if you love getting back to nature and avoiding the sterile hotel lifestyle, this is for you. We loved it. Wonderful back porch with swing and rockers, swing out front for the view of a beautiful sunset, and a swing on the front porch too! I wish I could post all of the great pictures I took. The owner has special touches inside and out. Oh, and the trail down to the creek with the awesome deck is incredible. We hope to return with the kids (teens) -- a great cabin in the side yard perfect for two more. (The main cabin will easily sleep 6.) And if you miss the caretaker, you've missed part of the charm. He's such an extra gem to the visit.

Loved the cabin - thanks!

Best things about the property are the seclusion and the nice little touches. There is lots of room around the cabin for outdoor games and a lovely porch in back. Minutes from the winery and the town also has some cool shops and nice parks. We appreciated the complementary toiletries, food stuffs, and DVDS/CDS. I've stayed at log cabins before that had weak showers, old appliances, uncomfortable beds but this cabin - though rustic looking - was well equipped.

"Authentic" Log Cabin

Guest: Wine Enthusiast (Kenansville, NC)
Date of Stay: 07/29/10 Review Submitted: 08/03/10

If you want to stay in an authentic log cabin--but with modern amenities--this is it! We spent four days at the cabin, using it as an operations base for touring wineries. Many are very close by. The owner was great to work with, very responsive, and the caretaker "next door" was great, too. There were six of us and the cabin met our needs well. It was secluded, serene, relaxing--just a nice getaway spot. Wineries and other attractions are very convenient to this location. It did rain some, and it was nice to sit on the back porch, watch the rain, and listen to it beating on the tin roof. Try it out--MUCH better than a motel room!

We had a great time. The cabin is adorable! It was so nice to walk to the stream and relax on the porch. We especially loved hearing the rain on the tin roof. This was much more accommodating for two couples traveling together than two hotel rooms would have been. Susan, (owner) was very helpful and informative. The Depot restaurant was a must do.

Susan was so kind to work with us on such short notice for renting the cabin. We stayed for one night and had a great time. The cabin was clean and cozy, just what we were looking for a quick little getaway. It's also located right down the road from Shelton Vineyards so we had a great lunch and quick tour of their winery.

We came down for an annual climbing trip on the warm south-facing cliffs of North Carolina. The cabin was convenient to our destination, was well equipped, and was very cozy, plus it has lots of personality! The owner went out of her way to prepare the cabin last minute and to follow-up with us to ensure our stay was comfortable. We will absolutely be coming back to stay on our subsequent climbing trips to this area.

I cannot even put into words how serene this cabin was for me. It seemed like I spent every waking moment on the back porch. My boyfriend and I fell completely in love with the doggy visitor who decided to sit with us on the porch every morning. The owner is extremely nice and very helpful in whatever you may need. I would really love to come back and spend a week and have told so many friends about it!

My husband and I spent a wonderful weekend at the cabin a few weeks ago. It is as authentic as you can possibly get yet it has all the modern day amenities. The fireplace is so relaxing and cozy and we loved the hammocks by the creek...perfect place to curl up with a book and escape reality. It is very secluded and you feel so far from civilization while you are only minutes away from anything that you could possibly need. Owner was very helpful and accommodating. We will definitely visit again soon. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a little R&R.

We absolutely loved our weekend at your adorable cabin in Dobson. It was a girls' weekend and we attended the summer concert (Embers) at Shelton Vineyards. The location was perfect (just a few minutes away from Shelton's) and the cabin was very rustic, yet comfortable and clean. I cannot wait for my husband and neighbors to come up for another concert and weekend at your cabin. Thank you so much for sharing.

I hosted a girls weekend at this cabin in the Fall and it was wonderful! Enough sleeping for everyone and a cozy living area. We watched movies and sat on the porch swings. We enjoyed downtown Mt. Airy, Shelton Vineyards, and the Depot which are all less than 10 minutes away. I would definitely recommend!

Owner response:It was my pleasure having you girls at the cabin...I will clarify that the distance to Mt. Airy and "The Depot" restuarant is more like 15-20 minutes. Glad you enjoyed your stay!

I spent a long weekend in this cabin and it is everything the owner says it is. The air is sweet and the trees shade the porches, there are rockers and porch swings. The fireplace is made of stone-amazing! Loved the creek deck and the hammocks. Can't wait to go again!

Thanks so much for letting us rent this little bit of heaven in the hills. Our stress just melted away from the moment we pulled into the driveway and saw the cabin and guest house nestled in the woods. Inside the modern amenities kept us city folks comfortable, while giving us just enough seclusion to feel removed from the our usual routine. We got groceries nearby, and enjoyed a really delicious meal at the Depot, that restaurant that was recommended. We worked puzzles, watched movies, read and walked down to the creek. There is a nice deck down there with chairs, hammock. Really picturesque!!! We used all the beds with our family, the upstairs was very comfortable, and gave us plenty of room to spread out. I would definitely recommend the place, and we will be in touch for more bookings. We noticed the vineyard next door and will return again so that we can tour there and have dinner. pb
