This is a beautiful cottage just 1 minute from the beautiful ocean via the private pathway to the sandy beach. Recently Alicia Keys spent her birthday here and was engaged. (please see comment below).

Hale Tapa cottage is a private retreat located admist lush tropical landscaping with palm trees and tropical flowers. This beautiful, well-appointed cottage is just steps from white sand beaches that stretch ahead in both directions with breathtaking vistas. Hale Tapa is decorated polynesian style with bamboo floors, teak furniture and Asian accents. Fine art further compliments the romantic ambiance. The cottage is crisp and clean. From every vantage point you feel serenity and soft breezes.
Hale Tapa's location is unique in beautiful Haena. The cottage is located between two beach accesses; to the right is the sunrise and moonrise, and to the left is the sunset. Both are within a 1-2 minute walk to the beach. Two of the top beaches in the islands are right down the road: Tunnels Beach and Hanalei Bay. Enjoy leisurely walks along the crescent-shaped Hanalei Bay, snorkel admist the coral reefs in the azure colored waters off of Tunnels and Ke'e Beach or just enjoy the waterfalls and hiking areas in the mountains right near by. The cool trade winds are here to welcome you for spectacular sunrises and sunsets that will take your breath away as they melt into the horizon.
Nearby is the Napali coast trail and all the magical places the north shore has to offer. From the cottage you can see the green folded mountains from a vantage point that is one of the most photographed mountain backdrops on Kauai. Just a 5 minute walk away is an excellent Mediterranean restaurant with nightly entertainment and a Luau on Tuesdays. Or if you like simply kick-back and grill on the barbecue at Haletapa, sip on your wine and listen to the sounds of the surf.

My husband and I positively fell in love with this little cottage by the sea! It was clean, lovely, and truly romantic. It was heavenly to fall asleep at night to the sound of the waves nearby. In the mornings we would take our coffee out to the beach and stroll for hours. The location is superb! We enjoyed walking down to have sunset coctails and enjoy live music at the Mediterranean restaurant. Also, there is a charming little spa nearby where we had massages on the beach. We would highly recommend this little home away from home and we will certainly be back!
Recommended for:Romantic getaway, age 55+, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

What a totally special find! I was expecting to be a little disappointed because of the comments here (but was okay with that because the Price was right, and I had plans with friends in the daytime so knew I'd be in other places)... but the charm of the place! It is truly charming and beautiful. Great view of the garden. There is a path to the beach that is truly the kind of personal and one of a kind experience you cannot get with a hotel and most vrbo places. I didn't have any ants, and the place was spotless when I was there. The caretaker was generous and friendly. I feel really lucky to have found this place, it has soul and charm, and I felt comfortable immediately. It really evokes the hawaiian aloha and spirit (and has a truly GREAT bathtub). Kitchen was great for me- nice big fridge and coffee and the whole thing. All in all, I adored this place and when I go back to Kauai, I will book it again. I'd bring a sweetie, too.

Frankly, I was a little concerned after reading the previous comments about the romantic cottage by the sea. But, I am very happy to tell future guests that there is a new washer /dryer, bed linens and love seat. There are new pots, pans and kitchen utensils. And, the cottage is clean, very clean with NO ants. The Kitchen is small, but very doable! What do you expect in a cottage? Plenty for a veggie omelets or granola –fruit-yogurt breakfasts….We went exploring the island and had great lunches out and about Kauai, and made memorable grilled fish salads at night. O.K. let’s get to the good stuff…..Bon fires on the beach at night!! JUST ½ block to the BEACH!!! A great restaurant / bar…live music just 5 minute walk down the beach!! Many Great Beaches near by,un-believable snorkeling!!! Just what the LOVE of MY LIFE and I were hoping to find….. Quiet, beautiful, peaceful and VERY Romantic!!!

This Haena cottage has a good location a very short walk from the beach. Unfortunately, the cottage itself was a huge disappointment. First, there are tons of mosquitoes by the front door, so you couldn't 't really get inside without getting bites and/or letting them inside (yes, I know there are lots of bugs in Kauai... this was still challenging). Once inside, the place was not clean, had dead ants on the bed spread and swarms of ants in the bathroom and by the front door in the kitchen area, despite ant traps around the place. The owner came in almost immediately and said that she was surprised it wasn't clean because it had been cleaned 5 days before... she proceeded to sweep and had cleaners in the next morning. The unit was then swept and wiped down, but didn't address the tape around the ill-fitting screens throughout (which then had bugs stuck to the tape around most of the windows - not too attractive), the continuing swarms of ants, dust on the walls and rusty appliances (washer/dryer/fridge). We never felt it was clean enough to cook in the cottage. The place cooled off nicely at night, though the fan was located over the kitchen instead of over the bed, which seemed odd. We were looking for a nice romantic getaway for our first 4 nights in Kauai, our time on the North Side, and did NOT find this cottage to be romantic, as billed. The kicker is that we paid cleaning fee, which was never really clean, even after the cleaners came back the next day.

This place was ok, but definitely not great. For the money you get what you pay for. It's definitely close to the beach and within a 2 km walk to some of the best snorkeling at tunnels beach. The cottage is airy and cools down well at night, but that is where the positives end. Some of the points that were not so good are: - Appliances are a bit old, rusty and not so clean. - Kitchen isn't very great for cooking so don't expect to be making meals too often because the layout, pots, pans and utensils just don't support it. - The bed is completely worn out and feels like you are falling into a hole (it looks about 10 years old or older) - There really is no outside space that you would like to sit at. The house is very close and there isn't a great table set-up. Don't be fooled by the picture of the laying down lawn chair, that isn't for guests and is located somewhere else. - The BBQ is simple a tiny Weber coal BBQ. You cannot cook a steak on it and there is no wooden table to put it on so you have to cook on the ground. (resons to eat out again). Ok, so that sounds bad right? Well, if your looking for something really cheap, and close to the beach you can make this do. Just expect to factor in buying your meals and consider it a luxury cabin and then you will be happy. We still really enjoyed our vacation, but I would not return to the "Romantic Cottage By the Sea" until it has been updated.
Owner response:Since the time these guests have stayed the pots, pans and utensils have been replaced, there is now a new bed and love seat, there are lawn chairs available and new curtains have been put up. There are two BBQ grills on location, I suppose they only saw the smaller one.
