Our cabin home can be your home away from home!
Cool rushing water, fresh mountain air. The Log Cabin on Neil's Creek is situated on private land inside the Pisgah National Forest at the foot of Mount Mitchell in the high mountains. Neil's Creek rushes at a stone's throw past our "settin" porch toward the headwaters of the South Toe River. Open the windows and hear the creek! Mt. Mitchell Golf Course is a mile away, as is Roaring Fork Falls. Just nine miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway. The cabin is in a high mountain valley at 3,000 ft elevation. The terrain nearby is quite level and an easy and beautiful walk, or you can hike a trail straight up to the top of Mt Mitchell.
Let us share with you the serenity of a place where time is measured in tree rings and wildflower seasons, where your most pressing appointment is to see a waterfall, and dream among mountains.
About an hour and 15 minutes drive from Asheville, the South Toe River Valley is an exquisite, fun, and friendly place to visit. The area is a photographer's, sport or craft person's delight. Sights include Penland Art Center, Linville Falls, many local waterfalls, Blowing Rock, Boone, Little Switzerland, Spruce Pine, and Grandfather Mountain.
A log cabin vacation is not like staying in a hotel. There's no maid service. Sheets and towels are ready for you when you check in - but you will have to make your own bed! On the other hand, what is precious is the peaceful return to nature - the babbling of the creek, the freshness of the air and of the forest. You can sleep with the sounds of nature coming in your open window - except maybe in winter! And this is the beauty of a log cabin vacation - you have the full experience of nature, with the comfort of cooking in a modern, well-equipped kitchen, your own bathroom, and a real bed at night. Not to mention the coziness of a fire, and the comfort of both heating and air conditioning as needed.
Our cabin home (and your vacation getaway) is about 1100 square feet. There is one large bathroom with washer and dryer, a dining area, and a game area. The cabin is located in a hemlock grove. While sitting on the deck, you are looking out over a rushing stream, while ridge-top views of the mountains (especially in winter) complete your experience in getting away from it all. Any time of the year, there's a whole wide world of nature to explore, or just to sit down and experience.
Join our regular returning guests in experiencing the relaxing qualities of nature, waiting for you any time of year. Here, time seems to stand still as you forget about deadlines more pressing than hiking or fishing.
Our rates INCLUDE all cleaning fees, unless you make a really big mess, or damage anything. Local and state taxes apply.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2006
Lee(R) and Maggie(L) moved to North Carolina from Florida in 2005.
Why the Owner Chose Burnsville
Maggie fell in love with this cabin before we purchased our first North Carolina home in Fairview. The uniqueness of the property, being in the national forest, with the nearness of the creek, was completely irresistible. Western North Carolina has some of the richest natural areas, from the mountains, to the forests, to the streams. Fortunately, large areas have been preserved for the future as national forests. Our cabin is within this National Forest. This means that you are surrounded by that majestic forest - a pocket of habitation within the beauty of nature.
Western North Carolina enjoys one of the highest levels of biodiversity in North America. Being the South with altitude, we appreciate the opportunity to see so much different wildlife without having to do much more than sit out on the porch!
We actually came to Burnsville for the first time in February, in a snowstorm. The natural beauty of the mountains, the snow, and the sky touched our hearts. The surrounding towns of Spruce Pine, Little Switzerland and Marion have restaurants, shops and other attractions for when we want to just go exploring. Nature surrounds you at every turn. Just listening to the sound of the South Toe River that Neils Creek feeds is relaxing, and it's fascinating to see the changes throughout the year. We can't even decide which season we like best, because they all have their attractions!
The South Toe Township of Yancey County is noted for its arts and crafts, not to mention its natural areas.
The Unique Benefits of this Cabin
It's wonderful to just walk out the door and hike in the forest. We especially enjoy the nearby waterfalls. We also live in a beautiful area, but the flatness of the land around Neil's Creek makes hiking a total pleasure. We like the restaurant at the Mount Mitchell Golf Course when it is open during the season, and we think Burnsville is an absolutely charming small town.
If you are or are bringing people with limited mobility, the Forest Service is building a special area in 2011-2012 for wheelchair access to the creek that is just a few houses down from our property.
Lots of places advertise creek access, but we're not kidding! Neil's Creek is a 365/24/7 creek that literally is only a few yards from the cabin. Leave your windows open at night, and you hear the creek. Sit on the back porch, and you can watch and hear the water.
In 2011, we just completed a new rail around the deck of the cabin facing the creek. Made of local hemlock from the forest, this deck is an incredible work of local art, as well as a safety enhancement to your enjoyment of the deck. This enhancement includes steps down to creekside.
In Spring, there is the enjoyment of the land and its creatures waking up, as wildflowers burst on the scene. In summer, it's the calm peacefulness of a far green country.
In autumn, it's the incomparable show of the leaves in full color.
If you are renting from us in winter, please do watch the weather forecasts, especially for snow. The last mile of road to the cabin is a US Forest road, which is not plowed. But the access road is very flat, and should provide no problem unless there is a lot of snow. The Blue Ridge Parkway is closed in winter, but you can always get there through Burnsville or Marion. Winter brings a peace and serenity that you don't find in the summer - but it's great that this experience includes a warm cabin and a fireplace

This place was more than I expected! Quiet, serene, and all the comforts of home, more really! The owners have thought of every thing and didn't skimp! It was clean, well-stocked, neat, and just plain cute! I felt like this was a friend's home and they wanted us to have a wonderful time. And we did!

My family and I (wife and two boys 7 & 9) stayed here the week before Christmas 2011 and had a wonderful time! The boys had a blast playing outside by the creek, riding their bikes down the gravel road, and walking our dog. My wife and I just enjoyed the quiet. We were looking for a quiet, peaceful, and restful stay and that's exactly what we received at this cabin. My boys love being home, but they didn't want to leave the cabin. We will be back!

We spent Thanksgiving weekend on Neil's Creek, and had a wonderful time. The cabin is literally right on the creek! The water rushes over the stones and makes a lovely sound. From the porch, you are literally facing the Black Mountains and their high peaks. The cabin is located within walking distance of two gorgeous waterfalls. If you enjoy a walk in the woods and beautiful scenery, you can't go wrong staying here! We took our doggies with us, and enjoyed all the hiking trails surrounding the cabin, and my husband stayed on the river with his new fly fishing rod! The cabin itself has everything you would ever need inside. We cooked Thanksgiving dinner there and the kitchen had everything we needed for the "big meal". The beds were comfy ~ which is not always the case when you are not in your own! It was wonderful having a washer and dryer in the cabin, too. Lee and Maggie were fabulous to work with and are A+ folks. They made arranging our trip simple. I would definitely return to the Cabin on Neil's Creek!
Owner response:October is our most popular month with the beautiful Fall colors, but the color change often starts in late September, and we think the Fall and Winter is often underrated. Thanksgiving in a cabin puts the holiday in a really cool light - and the kitchen has all the equipment for the holiday meal.

We rented the cabin the last week of oct.08.The stream was a wonderful place to relax and get away from the hum-drum of every day work. During the middle of the week 2inches of snow fell, and that made the trip from Florida worth while after the long drive.we are seniors and this was the best vacation in years!!!Also, the cabin was great, nice and cozy with the fireplace.Thank you for a great time!!!!

The cabin was really cute and eclectic/country and very clean. All the utensils for cooking and eating are supplied, minimizing the items needed to be brought in. Our only disappointment was that there is now a split rail fence blocking the view and use of the creek. The sound of the creek was very relaxing! We really enjoyed our weekend stay. Jim & Deb

This was a wonderful place to stay. It had plenty of room and was beautifully decorated. The fireplace warmed the house up nicely. The creek behind it was absolutely beautiful! The only problem is that while exploring, we were told we were trespassing and to stay on our side of the creek. Bummer for the kids! You can really relax here since you get no cell phone service for quite a few miles on the highway. It was a nice change! It was nice to be so close to the Parkway. We will definately try to stay here again!

Our Family stayed at the Neil Creek cabin for the Thanks Giving week 11/17 - 11/23. It was fantastic. We hiked, fished, went to GrandFather Mt., Gem Mt. (the kids loved that), Blowing rock, Asheville. It was fun. My youngest daughter didn't want to leave (neither did I). Hope to visit again. John L.

We loved our time here! We rented both cabins for a family get together; and they both were absolutly wonderful! Plenty of room and greatly appointed... I could have stayed forever! The natural setting was perfect... and the Black Bear walking by on Tuesday AM was the icing on the cake! I think we are all coming back next year and hopefully the bear too!
