This magnificent new custom designed home - The Sea Sanctuary - is situated just a hundred yards from the sand with 180 degree whitewater views. A seal colony can be found 1/2 mile to the south and exceptional tidepooling can be found directly in front of the home. A bike/walking trail runs along the ocean as well. Enjoy a solitary walk along the beach - in fact you could walk for miles and miles in secluded exploration of beach and sandy dunes. Radiant floor heat and a wood-burning fireplace can make this rental extra cozy in the winter. Elevated decks both front and rear allow for enjoyable outdoor living as well. A Jacuzzi-brand hot tub sits on the front deck from which you can watch and listen to the ocean's roar, see the pelicans glide by, and at night watch thousands upon thousands of stars.
To take advantage of the great view, the main living area in the house is on the 2nd floor, including the master bedroom, kitchen, living room and den, all with gorgeous bamboo floors. A 5x7' loft in the living room accessible from a built in ladder is a great place to play a game of cards, relax with a book or have a private conversation. Kids always want to sleep up there on the carpeted floor, and adults sometimes do too! Directly under the loft is the window seat - the most popular spot in the house - where another guest can sleep quite comfortably if desired. The 42" wall-mounted flat screen TV is in a smaller den attached to the living room. The double doors on the den close, keeping the viewing noise from infiltrating the peacefulness of the rest of the house. One or two people can sleep privately on the den's pull-out sofa sectional
A gourmet custom granite and bamboo kitchen with double oven, All-Clad Cookware, Dishwasher, Kitchen Aid Mixer, and other appliances make cooking or baking a joy for small or larger groups.
Downstairs, you enter through the slate entry area to find a photography gallery/carpeted open yoga/exercise area which includes two futons for yet another sleeping spot. it's also a great place for kids to play if you want them to have their space separate from the rest of the group. The downstairs bedroom has a wonderful view facing out to the ocean, and the Japanese-style tatami room makes for a serene meditation room.
The Sea Sanctuary is truly a beautiful home which can help to make your vacation by the sea very relaxing and extra memorable.
To sum up, there are many sleeping options:
- Upstairs bedroom - king bed
- Downstairs bedroom - queen bed
- Fireplace nook off the living room - queen futon and regular couch
- Den/TV room - Full-size pull-out sofa sleeper
- Exercise/play area - queen futon + single futon

Map & Owner's Profile
Year Purchased: 2007
Why the Owner Chose Fort Bragg
I came to this area on a road trip in 1998 and rented a small home just behind the lot where this home is now located. I woke up in the morning and the view included a "for-sale' sign for this land. I hadn't even been looking to buy something, but it was so beautiful here that I panicked and put in an offer that day. The next day, they accepted my offer and the rest is history. I personally designed the home and actually built it myself too, completing it in 2007. Oh happy day!
It is simply a stunning location, very quiet, yet still near to town, endless views to the north and south.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Easy beach access - no cliffs to worry about slipping down. About 100 yards or so outside the front door and you are in the sand. The house is very well stocked and maintained as the owner lives in the home for part of the year.
Discounts available for horseback riding at local stable, and sea kayaking. Ask owner for info or see postings in kitchen of home upon arrival.
Seals hang out here for most of the year. They have their pups in early/mid April.
This trail runs along the ocean in front of the house. Walk/ride south into MacKerricher Park or continue on along the coast into Fort Bragg
Great tidepools are located here. I keep a tide table in the house for guests to see when the low tides are for best tidepooling. Starfish, anemone, crabs - all sorts of interesting science right there to explore.
The beach is an easy stroll out the front door. No cliffs to clamber down, just an easy grade down to the sand.
The trail ends here where you walk down to the sand and can walk for nearly 4 miles along the sea here if you wish.
These are the largest dune system in California. Explore the dunes for 1 mile back to Hwy 1 and 4 miles south to "10 mile" river. A huge expanse to get away from it all, follow animal tracks, have a picnic, whatever. Amazing place.
A great adventure to try to find this place while on a hike. Best to take a good look at Google Satellite imagery first and then take off and try to find it. Look up "fen" too before you go to make it a fun science outing.
Here's where you go to rent horses and go for a ride along the beach and in front of the house.
Traditional Mexican food in a fun ambiance. Closest restaurant to the home. Good margarita's too, if that's your interest.
In late summer, walk around the corner to this spot and pick wild blackberries along the side of the road.
Walk or drive to this spot and continue out to see more seals along a wooden boardwalk. A nice stroll.
Although you can also spot whales from the house, this spot gets you out to where they pass closer to shore.
This is the main surfing beach in the area. Park along HWY1 and walk along a trail to the beach here
A small lake. There is a boardwalk trail around this lake, but it may still be awaiting repair.

Even with such amazing pictures & excellent description, it still does not do justice nor compare to what is actually going on here. The environment & feel of this place was unexplainable yet such the perfect setting to an amazing week. From the moment we opened the door,it was far beyond what I imagined!.All stress dissipated! As we explored each room, nook & cranny like little children at a Forth of July firework display you could hear the "ooos" and "aughs" throughout the house. From the breathtaking view of the ocean to the excellent taste in design, decor and captivating art work this place was absolutely stunning from the inside out.Very much complimentary to what we hoped for... (quality, relaxing time together; enjoying the simple things in life.)With that being said, I discovered the best " sleeping remedy" a cozy little spot in the bay window makes for some of the best peaceful night sleep and highly recommended to anyone staying here.Falling asleep to the sound of the crashing waves IS the natural remedy. And what better way to start the morning than waking up to the most beautiful view of the sun shining on the endless ocean and a friendly neighbor wishing you a good morning while walking their dogs.Stepping out onto the back balcony being greeted by the sound of chirping birds fills the air with beautiful music while admiring a mom & baby deer gathering for their breakfast. This was just a little sample of what the sanctuary exuded! And what a perfect spot it was! We spent a lot of our time being girlfriends here. The hot tub was a very popular spot for doing just that.We each found our place in the home.We played games on the big dinning room table. While one curls up with a book another takes advantage of a long needed bubble bath. The incense gave clue to several of us finding their way down to the meditation room. The smell of delicious cooking mixed with the bonding of lots of laughter and singing could be heard from beyond these doors. We felt very comfortable. The whole entire place was clean and spotless. We indeed made fond memories during our stay.We admire and respect each detail that was put into the balance of the sanctuary, making it so welcoming.Highly recommended to anyone looking for a relaxing roomy environment. You will not be disappointed.Tranquility, peace and relaxation fills each space with reflections of this beautiful sanctuary! The owner topped it off! Excellent communication,a pleasure to work with! Thank you! Thank you!

This place is absolutely beautiful! My boyfriend brought me here for my birthday getaway! I had no idea where we were going and showing up to this beach front house was amazing. It was just the 2 of us in the house for 4 days. It rained while we were there and it was beautiful to watch the rain from inside. We stayed inside almost the entire trip and enjoyed a nice fire. We cooked there rather than going out to restaurants. It was so relaxing and peaceful and so nice to be so close to the water. My boyfriend also surprised me with going horseback riding on the beach which I had been wanting to do for a really long time. The place we went to (I forgot the name) offered a discount since we stayed at the Sea Sanctuary. The hot tub was also amazing. We read Ted's story about his journey building this house and I think he did a great job accomplishing his goals of the house. I couldn't have planned a more perfect trip and we will definitely come back to the Sea Sanctuary.

Sea Sanctuary is a beautiful house, and the location can't be beat. Views from the house towards the ocean are stunning. The kids were excited to be so close to the beach, and walking distance to a seal rookery. The house is clean, comfortable, with lots of areas for sleeping, and a great kitchen. Ted, the owner, was easy to deal with. We would definitely return to this house.

Four Magical Days at Sea Sanctuary

We spent a magical four days at Sea Sanctuary in June. Our party consisted of three adults, a teenaged girl, and a pre-teen boy. We were blessed by beautiful weather for the whole visit. The house was exactly as it had been described to us. It was also exceptionally clean and lacked nothing that we needed. The kitchen is wonderfully appointed, and we enjoyed cooperating in the preparation of a series of great meals. We had brought all our own groceries, The only utensil we missed was a wok, but we had one with us (!). I confess that we did use a few of Ted's spices - nice collection in the second drawer on the left of the stove ;-) After dinner the first evening, we adjourned to the hot tub. Maybe some plastic wine glasses would be a nice addition, but we coped nicely with the exceptionally fine ones in the kitchen cupboard. This established a nightly ritual of watching the sun set and then turning on the hot tub lights and lazing in the rapid onset of darkness. My wife and I had the upstairs bedroom and really liked the sliding doors that allowed us to drip our way to the well-appointed bathroom after soaking. The huge open space downstairs adjoining the meditation space was the scene for some wonderful morning yoga sessions, and the equipment stash was greatly appreciated, even though we had our mats with us. The house has at least a dozen places where one person or two or three can be together while away from the others in the party, which helps wonderfully to maintain the sense of peace that the house's design helps one feel. The meditation space was special. A rare addition to most western houses, it was delightfully Japanese with overtones of Ted, who is something of an eclectic soul. Just down the beach, the seals that hang out on a huge offshore rock had recently given birth to some pups, and we used the house binoculars to bring them into close view. There was even mystery: the most curiously powerful smell of honey just as the trail takes off to the seal viewing area, for which none of our party could identify a source. Ted has promised to try to identify it. In sum, This is a magical place, well appointed, delightfully located, and was a perfect place to spend time among people we love.

great convenient location on the ocean with no worries about the kids crossing the little "road" between the house and the ocean. We vacationed with 3 generations and grandkids ranging from 9 to 15 years old and all found plenty to do. The sunsets from the hot tub can't be beat. The grandkids loved the "eagle's nest" inside, although access to the ladder might need to be blocked off for younger kids . The property was as lovely as it looked in the photos. Ocean kayaking was a memorable experience and safe for all ages. Recommend D'Aurelio's for best pizza ever and the peanut butter pie at Laurel Deli in front of the train station.

This house has it all. I have stayed at many ocean and beach vacatiion houses and have never been so happy and relaxed. This house is exactly like the description and pictures. It offers the best of many worlds (georgeous views, easy beach access, miles of walking paths, close wildlife, peaceful atmosphere, great kitchen fully stocked, seperate media space, and a hot tub with beach or star views!) The owner was generous and easy to work with, even helping us with planning ahead of time. It had so many lovely touches that realy gave us the feeling of being in a sanctuary. The loft and musical instruments were a hit with everyone, especially the kids. The fireplace and greatroom were spacious and inviting on a cool night. We also loved how amazing the nearly empty stretch of beach was. There was also ocean wildlife right outside the door to explore and view. I will book early and often to come back to this wonderful space!

Wow - what a wonderful experience! This house is extremely spacious and well-maintained. The kitchen/great room/dining room/loft are the heart of the home. We spent quite a bit of time cooking, chatting, eating, and even making music in this area. (Ted has a piano, conga drum, shakers, etc.) Unfortunately, we never took the time to light the beautiful three-sided fireplace, but I'm sure it would be very nice. The front deck overlooking the ocean has the hot tub - wonderful place for a sunset. The back deck with loungers and grill is a perfect spot for morning sun. We really enjoyed our morning coffee and a book out here. There is a nice TV room off the great room with a sofa sleeper and a french door for privacy. The master bedroom/bathroom are filled with light and very spacious, with direct access to the front deck (hot tub). Ted provides a beautiful kitchen with everything you may need. Everything is marked with a label and/or instructions (for example - dishwasher/oven/coffee maker). The large dining table held 8 people very comfortably. There is a welcome letter with information on all aspects of the house - very thorough. The lower level is very large and open. A day bed and futon provide extra sleeping space and there is a queen bedroom and bathroom on this level as well. Behind some lovely Japanese style sliding doors is a meditation room. (could also sleep more people) My girls loved hanging out and playing in this big, open area and we loved having them down one level to cut down on the noise. ha ha. Laundry on this level as well. The location was wonderful. Crossing the road (hardly a car on it), you immediately come to the dunes/beach. Then you cross a wonderfully long, paved trail, and continue on the dark sand beach until you hit the water. About a 10 minute walk to the left is a seal colony - very fun to watch. The views were stunning and walks were wonderful. The house is about a 5 minute drive to Ft. Bragg. We asked someone how to get to Glass Beach (in Ft. Bragg), this was a unique little outing - beautiful area. Further south is the town of Mendocino - which is definitely worth a visit as well. Ted was great to work with, oh and he's a very talented photographer as well. His photos hang on the wall on the lower level - amazing! We left some clothing items in the house and only discovered they were missing after we left. He promptly mailed them back to us and did so at his expense - class act!! Our best!!

I planned a trip here for my husband and his brothers 31st birthday. we loved this house. the view of the ocean is breathtaking and sitting in the hot tub enjoying the sound of the waves and tranquility of being there was great. It was just what we needed. the beach is literally right across the street and there is miles of it to walk on. the house is a few minuets out of town but close to the state park and horse back riding trails. We loved our stay here and hope to stay here again soon. Thanks again Ted your house is AWESOME!!! April,Aaron,Melissa and Justin

This home is a gem! The home is new and beautifully finished -- it has a really tranquil Japanese/Asian style decor with lots of natural wood, bamboo, and some slate. Downstairs are two beds that kids can use in a workout area as well as a separate bedroom. There's room for the kids to play, which is awesome. There's also a little meditation nook and a really nice washer/dryer combo. Upstairs is a beautiful kitchen, a cozy TV room, and a master bedroom, as well as a fantastic viewing area -- including a loft! -- to look at the water, search for migrating whales, and watch the waves crash on the beach. This house has a stunning view of the ocean! There's a small piano and some musical instruments, too, and lots of really special touches. It is just a perfect family place. I can't say enough good things about the owner. He went out of his way to make us feel welcome, including emailing us information about various activities and events in town, and even giving us referrals to service providers (such a masseuse), and he even offered to help get anything we needed in advance. Wow!! The owner lives there normally, so this is really his place (not a generic rental) and it shows! I had one small problem with the hot water heater conking out, but the owner had left his phone number and a quick call to him let us diagnose and fix the problem instantly -- he was super responsive and was able to talk me through how to reset the heater and get everything working just fine. We did notice the tap water had a little sediment (brownish color) in it (perhaps due to super heavy rains while we were there?) so we ended up drinking bottled water during our stay, but otherwise this was absolute perfection! I can't say enough good things about this home and the owner! First rate!! Fort Bragg is a wonderful coastal community just north of Mendocino with some neat beaches, coastal walks, the Skunk Train, Glass Beach, etc. We have relatives in Fort Bragg, too, so visit often -- we were looking for a really nice place to stay with our family (including two kids). Note: the home is great for kids, but not baby-proofed; probably best for 3+ yrs. It's about a 10 minute drive south to downtown Ft. Bragg, but it's worth the extra trip for the great view and tranquility provided by this location. We will definitely look to stay here again on our next trip to Fort Bragg! I highly recommend this home to others -- it was one of the best VRBO experiences I've ever had
Owner response:Good point on the baby-proofing! Since reading this response, the home has been baby-proofed with all household cleaning products safely tucked away out of reach. I haven't noticed any brown-sediment in the water since returning to the home after their stay. The home is on well water, but there are multiple treatment/filtration systems before the water reaches the tap. There is yet one additional filter on the water dispenser on the refrigerator should water quality remain a concern. Thanks for the feedback!
