Mexican Zen: Oceanfront, Tranquility, Architectural Elegance

Casa Isla blends Mexican contemporary architecture with a Zen feel for the ultimate luxury retreat. The house is on the tip of Isla Mujeres on a cliff overlooking the turquoise waters of the Bay of Cancun. Unobstructed ocean views from every room are breathtaking. Colorful fish and giant rays glide serenely through the crystal waters and frigate birds hang in the sky, making you feel like you're the only person for miles. The beach is a five minute walk or you may just want to relax by the infinity pool and let the sound of the ocean melt away the stress of everyday life.
Isla Mujeres is a Caribbean gem easily available from Cancun by ferry, but once you are there, it feels miles away. The island is known for its friendly people, welcoming atmosphere, relaxing vibe and world class beaches, fishing, diving and snorkeling. Punta Sur, where the house is located, is known for its serenity, tranquility and unparalleled views.
The house was constructed by the owners as their dream home and ultimate retreat. They worked with a renowned local architect and the house is a masterpiece of shapes, form, color, light and air. All local natural materials were used, from the signature giant banyan trees which define the generous outdoor spaces, to the custom woodwork in every room, to the natural Mayan marble used throughout the house. The main space is a huge open living room, dining room and kitchen which spans 45 feet and opens onto an outdoor dining room, living room and pool with terrace, hot tub, and palapita, all overlooking the ocean. Eighteen feet of glass panels in the living room fully retract into the wall so the house becomes completely open to the breezes and waves. Accommodations for six include three deluxe suites, each with air conditioning, ceiling fans, a safe, and en suite bathroom with walk in stone shower. All bedrooms and bathrooms have ocean views and are completely private. Ten and a half foot ceilings throughout the house give the feeling of openness, light, and airiness. The infinity pool has a shallow shelf for lounge chairs and a hot tub for 10 people. A thatched palapita next to the pool is great for enjoying cocktails at ocean's edge. The roof deck lounge is wonderful for watching sunrises or stargazing at night.
Casa Isla has all amenities, including wireless DSL internet, satellite TV, sound system with IPod docking station and free local and long distance calling.
Restaurants and a beach with swimming and snorkeling are a five minute walk.

We stayed for a week at Casa Isla and had a wonderful, relaxing experience. The house is beautiful, grand and comfortable, with considerable privacy and amazing ocean views. We were looking for peace and quiet and relief from the hustle bustle of city life, and we got it in spades. We rented a golf cart for the week and it was easy to get around the small island and sample many of the nice restaurants there. Overall, it was paradise.Did you find this review helpful? I stayed at Casa Isla for four nights on a girls' trip to celebrate our 30th birthdays. It could not have been more perfect. The view was incredible, and we spent pretty much every day just sitting by the pool enjoying it. Although hard to believe, the pictures honestly did not do this house justice. It was also great to be able to call home for free and check in with kids, husbands, work, etc. We found some amazing restaurants on the island, and Ron (the house manager) will set you up with a taxi driver, snorkeling, or anything else that you need. Kit was extremely friendly and very easy to work with. I definitely hope to go back some day!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, tourists without a car, families with young children, age 55+.
Owner response: Thanks, Kelly. I'm so happy you enjoyed yourselves! Kit

Our family (5 months old to 63 years old) just got back from spending an amazing week at Casa Isla. We had done major research on the island as well as the property and our only complaint is that we were only there for one week. Casa Isla was perfect for us.As soon as you open the front door, you know you made the right decision. . . .beautiful space and beautiful view straight thru the movable wall of windows to the infinity pool and turquoise water and beyond views of Cancun. The bedrooms were large enough for cribs and all had plenty of closet and storage space. The living areas let us all spread out but still be together. We had all our meals outside at the large dining room table by the pool and spent lots of time swinging ourselves with the babies in the chairs right outside the living room. All the bathrooms were very spacious and it was nice to have a washer and dryer at our disposal. The roof top deck was a perfect place to start or end the day. The pool is the focal point of the outdoor area and part of it had a shallow shelf that was perfect for our 15 month old grandson. We loved being on the south side of the island. . . .quiet and serene, but also loved jumping into our golf cart and spending time at North Beach, Zama Beach Club, Hidalgo (downtown area) and trying out lots of restaurants. . . .loved Fredy's, Mango's, Olivia's, Picus to name a few. Actually we even stopped at places only frequented by locals and they were great too. Although we really enjoyed exploring the whole island, Casa Isla was perfect in so many ways, you could easily never leave it.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, families with young children, age 55+.

My husband and I and our family just returned from Isla Mujeres and we stayed at Mexican Zen. It was absolutely amazing and the pictures do not do it justice! Except for the color of the water and pool, they really do look that blue! The house also seemed alot bigger in person than in the pictures. We had 8 staying in the house and we all had plenty of room so no one seemed like they were on top of eachother! The outside living area and pool area was perfect, and my favorite part was laying on the roof at night listening to the waves! It was also great to get away from all the downtown life and come home to such an amazing house, it was like a getaway all on its own!! I would recommend this property to anyone!!!!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing, age 55+.

We came for my daughters wedding, and couldn't believe that the picture on the internet actually didn't do the place any justice! It is much more beautiful in person-nicest place I've ever stayed. And the property mgr Ron was the greatest. He was available for us 24-7 for any questions or needs we had. Best place hands down on the island.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing, families with young children, age 55+.

We rented Casa Isla for a family reunion (ages 11 to 75) and loved it. The house was divine - tasteful and spacious -- and we loved the stunning views. The location is perfect too, within walking distance of a few shops, a national park and restaurant. It was a little bit of heaven for all of us!Recommended for: People with disabilities, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing, families with young children, age 55+.

Casa Isla is an absolute paradise, a million miles away from any cares and concerns of everyday life. Sitting in the indoor or outdoor living room or the outdoor dining room (or just taking a shower!), it is almost impossible to take one's eyes off the incredibly blue water. How can the color of the infinity pool match so perfectly? Short walks to the nearby eating places made everything especially easy. This is a marvelous and luxurious destination for relaxing and re-energizing.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

The sunsets off the outdoor dining room, the sound of the waves lapping on the beach below, with Cancun sparkling in the distant background, all contribute to the perfection of the location. The new, spacious home is cozy and comfortable and a wonderful place to relax and forget your worries. A wonderful home with everything we needed to come back to after traveling around the island, seeing the sites, meeting the local people, shopping, and enjoying fun Mexican cuisine and atmosphere. I highly recommend this awesome place and definitely plan to return again soon. We weren't sure where the infinity pool ends and the ocean views begin.Did you find this review helpful? Owner info
Year Purchased: 2008
About the owner: We live in Boston and have been coming to Isla Mujeres for 25 years as a getaway from the harsh winters. We are very fortunate that we were able to build our dream house in such a spectacular setting.
Why the Owner Chose Isla Mujeres:
We love the tranquil feeling of Isla Mujeres, the gorgeous blue waters and warm breezes, and the friendly Mexican people. We know the island well, and always loved the extreme south point with its views of the Bay of Cancun and the Caribbean Sea surrounding you on all sides. Because there are only a few lots on the point, when one became available we felt like we'd won the lottery. Isla is an easy trip from Boston and we feel at home as soon as we arrive.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Casa Isla has the best location on the island. The front yard is the Caribbean Sea and the back yard and main orientation of the house is the Bay of Cancun. We can sit by the pool for hours watching the colors of the ocean change, seeing fish and rays swim by, and frigate birds hang on the wind. The roofdeck overlooking the ocean to the east and south is wonderful for coffee in the morning because of its privacy, and we often go there to watch the sunrise or lie on the chaises to see the stars. The fact that we can walk to some of our favorite lunch and dinner spots is a bonus.
