wonderful weekend!

Guest: Cindy (Albuquerque)
Date of Stay: 04/27/12 Review Submitted: 04/30/12

I booked the Barnhous as an overnight for my daughter's 13th birthday. The accomodations were more than adequate for 7 teenage girls downstairs and two adults upstairs. The house is clean, well maintained and stocked with all that we needed and more. Mickey and Evelyn have thought of everything, and they were extremely generous with their time in showing us the fantastic ranch they have built for their family of award winning alpacas. I could have spent all day drinking coffee on the wraparound porch listening to the breeze in the aspens and the alpacas just yards away. We would definately return!

Hidden gem

Guest: Roland (Santa Fe)
Date of Stay: 03/08/12 Review Submitted: 03/12/12

The Haus was great. All that was needed for 4 kids and 2 adults. Plenty of food and kitchen utensils. Even a coffee grinder. One really special attraction to add in my book is the proximity of the San Antonio hot springs, maybe the nicest natural hot springs in New Mexico. It is but a few miles north of the Barnhaus. I followed some existing tracks on cross country skis, with a steep decent at the end on foot. Should be an even easier hike in the summer. Mickey and Evelyn were great.

The house was great...everything we needed was there. It slept 7 comfortably. Owners were wonderful and very accomodating...gave a wonderful tour of the alpaca farm. Great sledding just out the door. Close enough to Valle Caldera and the Jemez attractions but far enough away to feel like you're away from it all. We will return.

Winter Wonderland

Guest: Dave (Albuquerque)
Date of Stay: 12/07/11 Review Submitted: 12/20/11

Perfect two-bedroom get-away for my platonic friend of 15 years. It was a spiritual retreat which evolved into a marriage proposal and acceptance by the warm fireplace. A winter wonderland with God's peace and breathtaking scenery. The alpacas were fun to hang out with as were the two awesome hosts, Evelyn and Mickey. If your into cleanliness and good taste the Barnhaus was immaculate with just the right touch to make you feel at home. I also recommend 'Hiway 4 Deli Bakery' in Jemez. The baked goods are the creation of a master Chef (taught by a world renown chef). If you want to relax and rest your weary bones may I strongly suggest a stay at The Alpaca Barnhaus....Cheers!

Great time at the Barnhaus!!

Date of Stay: 11/24/11 Review Submitted: 11/28/11

My wife and I had an early Thanksgiving this year the first weekend of November, so decided to try VRBO for the first time and over Thanksgiving. Did we ever have a great time! We arrived late enough that we weren't able to have Thanksgiving dinner with the hosts, Mickey and Evelyn, although they invited us multiple times during our correspondence and before our trip. That is just the way they are! They are wonderful hosts and have a great place to spend a few days. Mickey was standing outside on the darkened road in near 30 degree weather to direct us to the cabin. It's about 3 miles off the highway and on a good road--you don't need 4 wheel drive unless there's lots of moisture or frozen snow or rain on the road. The Barnhaus, the cabin, has everything you need to stay a day or a month. You just bring your own food and clothing---everything else is already there. It snowed one night and we enjoyed a fire in the fireplace. The television has several stations and they provide multiple good movies, many filmed in the area. We rented a movie at Red Box in Los Alamos so that is an option also. During our stay it got dark by 5:30 so we had quite a bit of time available to read or watch movies and relax. The cabin has a good kitchen, stove, dishes, couch.....well, everything you need to live. It's very comfortable with a large front porch, outdoor bbq grill. The upstairs has two bedrooms and a half bath. The lower level a single bed and I think the couch makes into a bed and if it does, then the cabin would sleep 7, which is the number we intend to come with on our return trip! The owners raise alpacas and will give you a tour, yes, free, of their operation. I've seen two other alpaca operations, both in Texas, and neither one appeared to be at the same level of care as this operation. They are knowledgable about alpacas and will take the time to teach you about them. They have some good quality alpaca garments available for sale made with the fleece from the alpacas, so take some extra money and buy some slippers, a cap or shawl--you'll love it! The Jemez Springs area is beautiful with hot springs to hike to, bath houses to visit along with cultural history and art and pottery for sale in the area. There are numerous places to get to river access off the hwy for fishing. The Caldera--a volcanic crater--is a few miles away and offers an interesting visitors center. Out of space here...questions? achdrbrown@aol.com

Cozy & charming

Had a great stay! There were six of us, two kids, and everyone had a good time. The cabin was well-stocked, nice wine glasses, pots and pans, dishes, all the condiments one could want, even some canned food. It was clean, and beds were comfortable. We would definitely stay here again, for cross-country skiing, fishing, hiking and just relaxing. The cabin was so cozy it was hard to leave to do our planned activities! The owners, Mickey and Evelyn, were very accommodating, there when you needed them but not intrusive in any way. And getting to see the alpacas and dogs was a wonderful experience.

Date of Stay: 10/17/11 Review Submitted: 10/31/11

I was looking for somewhere in the mountains for myself and my two teen boys. I accidently found this on vrbo and immediately thought that it would be fun and interesting to "hang " out with Alpacas. We had the BEST time. The aspen leaves were turning golden and the cabin was spotless and had lots of extras..we took food already cooked so we did have to spend time cooking but it would have been fabulous to have cooked more. Very cozy and the place looks much better than the photos. Very quiet and peaceful. Mickey and Evelyn were very hospitable and friendly...like family.. Their two dogs...Bell and Tinker are awesome....I would highly recommend this place

Our 1st trip to New Mexico

Guest: RiJO (Kansas)
Date of Stay: 09/21/11 Review Submitted: 10/09/11

We found this beautiful place on the web by accident. It was the first time we have ever did the VRBO adventure. We headed to NM for fishing and hiking, which we found. Though fishing was no that great thanks to the fires and washouts on the Jemez River, everything else was perfect. Beautiful landscape, different every where we went. Mickey and Evelyn were great and their home lives up to and past any expectatons I had. The Alpacs were awesome. I recommend fishing San Gregerio Lake (Way up 126 towards Cuba) and star gazing at the Valles Caldera. The only down fall was the trash removal situation, you have to take it out and find a dumpster yourself. Remedied once we got over the idea of finding a dumpster, I recommend the one at Jemez Falls campground or Fenton Lake (Be sure to take a adequate amount of small trash sacks (grocery sacks work) to decrease your discomfort. Shop at Los ALamos or somewhere larger for your food. This is on place I WOULD GO AGAIN !! LOVED IT and it was Peaceful and quiet, the most restful place I have been. It is a dirt road up to the home, it is a pretty good road and a car can handle it. THANK YOU Mickey and Evelyn your place is lovely and the best. Would be a great Honeymoon getaway.

What a delightful month!! The temperatures (August) could not have been better. We fished, hiked, and traveled a 100 mile radius sightseeing. The alpacas were wonderful and from time to time we "helped" with them. Mickey and Evelyn were extremely helpful and of course the house is absolutely the best! We have stayed in many VRBO properties and this was by far the best equipped. The house is even better than the photos indicate. This is definitely a place to visit and spend time. We are looking forward to returning next summer.

The best vacation hide-away!

Guest: Dru (Amarillo, TX)
Date of Stay: 07/10/11 Review Submitted: 08/20/11

My husband and I badly needed a 'get away from it all' vacation. We spent the most wonderful week with our hosts, the alpacas and their two dogs, Tinker and Bell. The 'guest house' is really a more like a home. It has all the amenities of a home has plus an (almost) wrap around porch with picnic table and awning and gas grill. I got to feed the alpacas as often as I wanted (at their regular feeding time, of course) and they are sweet and gentle animals. They'd be wonderful for children to learn about. The description is very accurate re the location, appearance and amenities. The photos are right on. And the property is very clean. You can clean it yourself or, for extra money, have someone do it after you leave. We chose the latter. The sisters are lovely and fun to talk with, yet they also leave you alone. They were happy to answer questions, give directions, suggest places to go. I would definately recommend this property to others and, in fact, already have. Jemez Springs is about a 25 minute drive, the closest town. It's very small, the people are very friendly and we had a good lunch at a western place....can't remember the name! Mickey will know. I just can't come up with enough adjectives to describe how much we enjoyed our stay, but I'll try: the hummingbirds, as well as lots of others, are fun to watch and name. A bird watchers delight! The house is very comfortable and easy to live in. The wind through the pines lulled us to sleep. We were able to keep the house open all the time and the temperature was so nice and cool, especially the nights. There's all kinds of hikes you can go on, plus walk aroung the nearby areas. There's an abundance of things to see and do within an hour's drive or so and Mickey can tell you all about them. We have stayed at other owner vacation rentals, several in fact. But this one is by far the best in all ways: comfort, beauty of area, friendly and helpful hosts, the alpacas and dogs, the quiet, the stars, the comfortable porch, the inviting house. We Well Definately Be Back!!!!

Alpacas are Awesome

Guest: Matt (Miami Beach)
Date of Stay: 06/20/11 Review Submitted: 06/26/11

We came to the Jemez Mountains for a vacation and to commute into Los Alamos, where I grew up. We were fortunate that a cancellation permitted us to stay at the Alpaca Barnhaus for four days. The setting is rustic - and right by the alpacas, as promised. If you want to spend time with the alpacas, as did my 12 year old daughter (Alpacas are awesome), Mickey would be delighted to accommodate you. The house is a loft style structure with two upstairs bedrooms with queen Tempur-pedics and a single bed downstairs on the edge of a large living room. There is a full kitchen and laundry room. The graciousness of the space, and the care with which Evelyn and Mickey decorated made it a delightful refuge to which we eagerly returned at the end of long days. Note that there was no internet or cell service, though that may change. The commute to Los Alamos is between 45 minutes and an hour. We undertook the following hikes, most of which were within 20 minutes on SR 4: Las Conchas - a zen garden canyon on the Jemez river La Garita - a steep climb in the Valles Caldera with great views. The barnhaus is about as close (15 minutes away) as you can stay without camping to the Valles Caldera - formerly the greatest ranch, now one of the great parks, in the U.S. Tsankawi - A hike and climb through an archeological site on the top and sides of a desert mesa complete with cave dwellings and pot shards. Part of Bandelier National Monument, whose more extensive ruins have been partially reconstructed. Jemez Falls - a short walk in to an overlook, with options for more. Obsidian Ridge - one of many sites in the Jemez scattered with obsidian. Bayo Canyon - a spectacular canyon in Los Alamos. You probably won't find the best trailhead out at the stables without local help, but you can walk in from the roundabout between Barranca Mesa and North Mesa. East Fork of the Jemez river - a pleasant walk by and in the Jemez river up to a place where you can jump from a 20 foot ledge into a deep pool We saw the following animals during our visit: Alpacas Bat Cattle Chipmunk Coyote Deer Elk Garter snake A hawk holding a frog Horned toad Horses Hummingbird Prairie dog / gopher Ravens Squirrels - both Abert and rock Trout Various insects including butterfly and dragonfly

We had planned to only spend one night at the Alpaca Barnhaus. Fortunately the next night wasn't booked so we stayed another night. It was a great place to get away and relax. We went to Bandalier National Park while we were there. We also went to the hot springs down the road by Jemez Springs. Mickey and Evelyn were great hosts. The house was immaculate, and we had everything we needed to cook. They let us feed the alpacas, which I think was as fun for us parents as it was for the kids. If getting away is what you are looking for this is a great place. Nestled in the woods of northern New Mexico the Alpaca Barnhaus will give you the peace and solitude you are looking for. The water at the Alpaca Barnhaus is the best water I've had in years. Funny thing to write about, but it's the truth! If you're planning a trip to the area, the Alpaca Barnhaus is your place to stay! Thanks again Mickey and Evelyn!!! The McCue family

My wife and I ventured back to the Jemez and stayed at the Barnhaus again. This time around we came without children with the expectation of relaxing. We were not disappointed. Our previous stay at the Barnhaus was wonderful as it gave us a chance to stage our vacation from while carting around a couple of kiddos. I can say that it is equally as effective for a couple looking from peace and solitude. The location allowed us to enjoy all that the Jemez has to offer while also providing us the seclusion and quiet to completely unwind. We love being there and this will be the first place we check to stay when its time for us to come back to Northern New Mexico.

My husband and I stayed at the Alpaca Barnhaus in early April. It was a magical time for us. When we arrived in Albuquerque it was 84 degrees but it snowed twice that week on the mountain. We had a snowball fight just like kids. My husband loves animals and he enjoyed learning about the alpacas and helping Evelyn care for them. We stayed in the area and explored Bandalier State Park, the Mission in Jemez Springs, Fenton Lake, the tunnels from the movie 310 to Yuma and both of the hot springs in town. My goal was to get away from it all and totally relax which I accomplished. Mickey and Evelyn were very hospitable. They made our trip memorable.

We were two couples looking for a few days of cross country skiing, hiking and hot spring hopping, with a special place to stay that wouldn't cost too much. We found that and so much more by staying at the Alpaca Barnhaus. The house was clean and comfortable as listed, with the perfect set up for cooking and relaxing by the wood stove. Mickey and Evelyn were delightful. They educated us about the alpacas and let us get close to them as well as the great dogs. We skied on the Conchas trail (gorgeous) and road to Jemez falls, then soaked in the all natural Spence hot springs. We recommend having a drink at Los Ojos and Buffalo burgers a tthe Laughing Lizard. Coming back to the Alpacas and the cozy house at the end of the day couldn't have been more perfect. Thanks Mickey, Evelyn, Tinker, Bell, Peggy Sue, and all you lovely Alpacas. Love our Alpaca fiber gloves we purchased from the gift shop too! We will definitely be back.

Date of Stay: 11/03/10 Review Submitted: 11/12/10

We (my husband, my two small children, and I) stayed in the Alpaca Barnhaus for two nights in early November. My only regret is that we didn't have more time to spend. The house is immaculately clean, very well cared for, exactly as described. Our security/cleaning deposit was refunded immediately. Mickey and Evelyn are friendly, helpful, and a pleasure to know, and their alpacas and dogs were also wonderful neighbors! My kids loved the place - the comfortable, clean, charmingly decorated house, the beautiful Jemez Mountain surroundings, the towering trees, and especially the alpacas, Peggy Sue and Tinker and Belle (*enormous* but unbelieveably friendly and gentle dogs). As for me - I've loved the Jemez Mountains all my life, enough to drag my family all the way back there from Athens, Greece, where we now live. The air smells sweeter in the Jemez than anywhere on earth. I would certainly recommend this vacation rental to anyone.

We thoroughly enjoyed our week long visit to the Alpaca Barnhaus. The setting is very relaxing and allows easy access to many of the states greatest sights. We enjoyed soaking at the nearby spence hot springs, at Ojo Caliente and at Giggling Springs. Each was different and rejuvenating. We also enjoying checking out Sante Fe, the nearby Ponderosa winery, Gilman tunnels, Madrid (and mama lisa's no pity cafe) and Bandelier. I loved that we didn't have to drive too far for anything (1.5 hours max) and that each night we returned to the serenity of the Barnhaus. Mickey and Evelyn were a joy to be around, as were their beautiful, sweet alpacas. They offer a unique experience to checking out a beautiful area of our country.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. My daughter and nephew absolutely adored being able to interact with the alpacas and had the distinct pleasure of seeing the three day old born just prior to our arrival. The cabin made an excellent "base camp" for us as we hiked, fished and played in the Jemez and Northern New Mexico for several days. It was well equipped for everything we needed or could possibly want while we were there. The cabin has such easy access and gracious hosts, we will be back.

Date of Stay: 06/28/10 Review Submitted: 07/14/10

Mickey and Evelyn have created a welcoming mountain 'oasis' that we found to be rejuvenating, relaxing and a refreshing change of pace. Is there a better way to start your day than chatting with the alpacas while sipping your coffee? They listened attentively and occasionally said 'hmm', now that's cheap psychotherapy. We were encouraged to visit them as much as we wanted. The setting is perfectly situated: close to make day trips to Bandalier, Valdera Caldera, enjoy hikes and wildlife sightings everywhere. We loved the Jemez Springs 4th of July parade and duck race festivities -- shout out to the Laughing Lizard restaurant, we loved everything on the menu. And guess what! The tap water at the Barnhaus is the best ever - no need for bottled water at this wonderful vacation get-away. We'll be back, dragging less stuff because Evelyn and Mickey have thoughtfully provided everything imaginable.

The Barnhaus is a unique place to stay. It seemed like each window framed something - trees, hummingbird feeder, alpaca pen ... The house itself was a lovely place to stay; clean and comfortable, full of homey touches and well stocked including such extras as crockpots and a coffee grinder! We used it as a base for some wonderful hikes only a few miles away including one to a natural spring. Of course unique and special part is living with the alpacas as your neighbors. We were lucky to be there when the babies were being born so the cuteness level was off the charts!

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay here! Everything was amazing; from the beautiful and comfortable Alpaca Barnhaus, the alpacas and their watchdogs, and Mickey and Evelyn. We just couldn't have asked for a better setting and/or better company. We used the Barnhaus as our "basecamp" for a number of great hikes. We hiked to the overlook of the San Antonio canyon which was approximately a 15-minute hike one way and another day spent several hours hiking on two tracks in the national forest. The hiking was gorgeous and thoroughly enjoyed. It caused us flatlanders who live at 500 ft elevation quite a bit of heavy breathing at the 8000-9000 ft elevation. We had the unique opportunity to be at the Barnhaus on the day of the annual shearing. What a treat it was to be invited to participate. What great fun it was to tell our friends here in Detroit about shearing alpacas! Mickey, Evelyn, Tinker and Belle (the Anatolian Shepherds), Laces the llama, and the 14? alpacas made us feel very welcome throughout our stay. We are already planning our next stay!

I just had a short stay at the Alpaca Barnhaus and can't wait to go back again! The house is *very* comfortable -- the owners have anticipated just about anything you could possibly want. It is located in a true mountain setting, surrounded by beautiful pine, fir and aspen trees. Spring comes late at this altitude and it was a chilly evening when I was there but I enjoyed a nice fire in the woodstove and stayed toasty warm. Slept great on the memory foam mattress topper. During the day I enjoyed sitting out at the picnic table on the deck, listening to the birds and hearing the wind in the trees. I'm an animal lover, so the highlight for me was being near the alpaca barn and learning about these gentle and interesting animals and getting to know their two Anatolian Shepherd dog caretakers. The Barnhaus would be a great romatic retreat, or with its several beds and great kitchen, it would be a wonderful place for a family getaway. Loved it!

Now we see why there are only positive ratings. When I called from the last cell coverage spot, I asked if there was snow (although I "knew" there wasn't because the trip to this point had only light snow). Mickey, pulling the phone away so the guests that were leaving could hear, said, "Hey, this guy wants to know if there is snow." I heard the happy chorus, "Yes! Lots!" It was so beautiful. My oldest son is in a wheelchair and it was no problem finding a pathway to the cabin. All 5 of us were comfortable. Mickey and Evelyn were gracious hosts. We want to come back again. No internet and no cell coverage. (Wonderful!) If you're looking for a winter get-away where you can rest and see God's creation at its finest, this is one of the best places we have found. Thank you Mickey and Evelyn! Hope you'll come to Waco sometime and let us return the hospitality.

Our family loved staying at the Alpaca Barnhaus for Christmas! Beautiful and serene...indescribable! The house was spacious but cozy...the pictures do NOT do it justice! Mickey and Evelyn are fabulous hostesses! The alpacas are charming and we learned so much about them. We highly recommend the Barnhaus for families!

We had the pleasure of renting the Alpaca Barnhaus to hold a retreat for the Eldorado HS basketball team. The home was great - nice and warm, the alpacas were adorable and Tinker and Belle made some new friends. The best part was no cell phone service. We had the undivided attention of 12 teenage girls!!

Our stay at the Alpaca Barnhaus was completely satisfying! The forest of the Jemez Mountains was spectacular, the birds and wildlife presented themselves at every opportunity, and the Alpacas were a joy. From daily hikes, fishing, strolling the main drag of Jemez Springs, visiting Los Alamos, and Old Town in Albuquerque we were completely emersed in the relaxing spirit of the Jemez Mountains. The cabin was quiet and cozy and furnished with something for everyone...books, games, music, and TV DVD's. The wrap around porch was a delight for our 2 year old granddaughter. Her exact words were, "I am so glad to be here!" What a perfect vacation!

What a wonderful experience, Mickey and Evelyn are great folks. Mickey even showed us around the area in her van and was kind enough to show us their beautiful home. I could stay there year around.

My husband, myself, and our 2 daughters stayed here for a weekend and we had a wonderful time. From the upstairs, it feels like you are in a treehouse, as the trees are so high. The cool air was a great! The house is beautiful and has everything you could need--a true home away from home!

We had a wonderful time staying here -- our only criticism is that we couldn't stay longer! Hope to be back some time.

The Alpaca Barnhaus is a beautiful place to stay! A huge house, wonderfully bright and open. We stayed in mid-March and had a dusting of snow, very pretty! The alpacas were also wonderful, and our 9-mo-old loved them! I would definitely stay here again, the proprietors were great, plus wonderful scenery and lots of hiking in the area.

Wow! I don't even know where to start. I rented this lovely home with my husband for my birthday and it was truly memorable. The house was gorgeous, with a romantic wood stove and views that take your breath away. The owners spent a lot of time teaching me about the alpacas and allowing me to feed them. It was truly a joy to stay there and it is so reasonably priced! I highly recommend staying at the Alpaca Barnhaus.

What a great place! Peaceful, quiet, and only an hour and a half from Albuquerque. We hiked, helped with the alpacas, played music, cooked our meals and enjoyed the mountains. We were there in November and the wood stove kept the house so cozy we never needed the heater. We look forward to returning in the spring!
