Casa Alux is a recently remodeled modern house located in the Chem Bech area of beautiful colonial Merida. A beautiful airy house, fully fitted with screened windows and ceiling fans, it is in the 'centro' of the city and around 10 blocks from the main streets. Close enough to be convenient, while far enough to be away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas.
All soft furnishings, linen, towels, kitchen appliances, china, glassware and cookware, along with the double bed in the second bedroom were newly purchased in April 2009.
The area is safe for walking, and easily accessible by bus, taxi, or rental car for those who do not wish to walk, and we have easy parking outside the front door. Chem Bech market is within 2 blocks, and a number of bars and restaurants, including a branch of Merida's famous "Eladio's" are all within a short walking distance. The house itself is located on a quiet residential street, with no through traffic passing immediately outside.
Downstairs are the living room, dining area, kitchen, one bedroom and full bathroom. Upstairs, accessible via external staircase is the master bedroom, half bath, and our rooftop terrace, which provides a wonderful location to relax in the evening while enjoying the breeze, and an outdoor cooking location equipped with a charcoal grill.
After a busy day, cool off by sitting in our dipping pool, conveniently located in the back yard outside the downstairs bedroom.
Merida itself is full of museums, cultural attractions, culinary distractions and shopping, and the surrounding area provides easy access to beaches, Mayan ruins (including world famous Uxmal and Chichen Itza, one of the new seven wonders of the world), cenotes, caves, Mayan villages, and many other attractions.
What is an Alux? An Alux is the name given to a type of spirit in the mythological tradition of the Maya peoples from the Yucatan. An Alux is conceived of as being small, only about knee-high, and in appearance resembling miniature traditionally dressed Maya people. Tradition holds that they are generally invisible. They are generally associated with natural features such as forests, caves, stones, and fields but can also be enticed to move somewhere through offerings.
