Our family built this Farm in 1652 and it has been in family hands ever since. We finished the remodelling of the main house in 2007.
If you are looking to relax, bring the whole family and looking to have a convenient base to tour Saxonia- you'll find it right here in Hartha-Frankenstein. But don't worry, there are no Frankenstein monsters here!
We have an apartment with kitchen, family room, bed room and bathroom and 2 extra guest rooms each with a private bathroom.
Karl and Brigitte are your gracious hosts and they will be happy to cook breakfast for you with farm fresh eggs (yes- you can get them yourself) and honey from the bees just behind the house. You will love the home made jams and jellies- but watch out if you come during harvest time- you may end up filling jam and honey jars with us. Or, perhaps you'll be here in spring and see the baby chicks, lambs and kittens. You can always sneak away and hike in our acres of forest nearby.
We are 45 minute from Dresden with it's beautiful castles, museums, and the Saxon Switzerland - Elbe Sandstone Mountains, the Elbe River and Meissen with the Porzelaine factory and museum.
Dresden boasts the Striezelmarket, the oldest documented Christmas market in Germany, dating to 1434. It is the home of the largest “Christmas Pyramid”- 45-foot-high wood structure lit with candles that spin the tiers of the decorated pyramid.
The tradition for Christmas wood carving comes from the Erzgebirge, or “ Ore mountain,” an old mining region south of the city that borders the Czech Republic. Nutcrackers and “smoking man” incense holders were originally created here.
The Stollen Festival is another highlight of the market, with the largest loaf of Christstollen-a buttery, spiced loaf weighting between 3 and 4 tons- cut here and served to visitors (check for the date).
Freibourg with the biggest mineral collection of the world is only a 30 minute drive.
The city was founded in 1186, and has been a center of the mining industry in the Ore Mountains for centuries. A symbol of this history is the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (famously known as the Mining Academy), established in 1765 and the oldest university of mining and metallurgy in the world. Freiberg also has a notable cathedral containing two famous Gottfried Silbermann organs. Furthermore there are two other organs made by Gottfried Silbermann - one at the St. Peter's Church (Petrikirche) and the other one at the St. James' Church (Jacobikirche). The medieval part of Freiberg stands under heritage protection.
Only five minutes away is the regionally famous Råuberschånke--Robber's Hideout--with its excellent food and 9 bowling alleys! Just beyond that is the charming village of Oederan with the Klein Erzgebirge. Amazing miniature monuments will be fun for adults and kids. A link to the website is below.

Hi there Jana, Well, we are back on the "treadmill" at school. It's hard to believe that one month ago we were at your Dad's enjoying a beautiful Christmas in Frankenstein. We have shown many people our photos of our holidays and they all agree that the time spent at your Dad's was the best! He was such a helpful, gracious and entertaining gentleman that went out of his way many times to make sure we were well fed and happy. Both our sons said that the most memorable part of the holiday was at Karl's house. My husband and I both agree that if we could have spent more time there and touring the smaller villages we would have. Berlin was nice and hectic (New Year's Eve was spectacular fireworks but a bit of a disappointment with the headliner being "David Hasellhoff"). We left a lot of snow in Germany and for the last two weeks we have had record snowfalls here as well. Our snow piles are at least five feet high and the temperatures were well below -25C to -35 C. Needless to say we are not happy to be back with the cold. Even though Germany had snow and cold it doesn't compare to here. What I really want to do is send your Dad some photos of his place, Christmas and all of us together. Do I send them to you via e-mail? or should I send some "regular" photos to his home. I want you to tell him that we really enjoyed our stay there and wish him all the best health and happiness in the New Year. As for you, well you were definitely so helpful and patient and supportive of our trip before and while we were there. I don't know what I would have done without all your e-mails. You saved us many times with your suggestions on where to go and what to do. It made all the difference in the world to have you as our contact person. I wish I could repay you in some way. If there is any time you want to come here or need some travel advice to see Western Canada....just call me. Once again, thanks so much for everything and please say "hello" to your Dad from me.

We had a splendid six-night visit. Karl and Brigitte were very helpful and kind. The farm made an excellent home base for day trips to Dresden, the Czech Republic, Augustusburg, Gorlitz (on the Polish border) and Freiberg. We rented the apartment and one extra room, and that was a perfect and spacious set-up for a family of four. Our children loved playing with the kittens, feeding the rabbits and sheep, and riding the bikes. There are plenty of supermarkets in the towns nearby, so it is easy to prepare some of your meals at the apartment. We also had dinner at the "Zur Kutsche" restaurant twice, and in both cases the food and service were great. We will always have fond memories of our visit to the area, and we hope to return again some day.

Karl & Bridget were wonderful hosts and our family thoroughly enjoyed our experience on the farm. We highly recommend their home to anyone looking for a quiet place in rural Germany. We were there with our 5 kids and they all enjoyed living as the Germans do, not staying in a more "touristy" place. It was great. We also enjoyed the day trips we took to Dresden, Meissen and Decin, Czech Republic. They were easily accessible and the farm was a great place to come home to!

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome
Awesome, Awesome, Awesome
This place is great for those wanting to tour this part of Germany. We made this our "home base" for day trips to Dresden, Prague, Gorlitz (Polish border), Freiberg, Meissen, etc. You can't beat the price and you can't ask for more from the hosts. Both Karl and Bridgette are as gracious as they come and they will go out of their way to make your stay comfortable. We got lucky and happened to stay during the 825th anniversary of Frankenstein so a lot of family members and friends were in the area for the celebration. Everyone of them treated us like a member of their family. Put this place on the top of your list of places to stay if you plan on traveling to this area or Europe. You won't regret the decision. Jana, please tell the "burgermeister" hello from the "big boss", Beth and the guys. We all had a GREAT time during the time we spent there.

Wonderful Country Experience
Wonderful Country Experience
My wife, brother and I recently spent two weeks touring Germany, staying in a mix of hotels and VRBOs in a variety of cities and towns. Karl and Bridgette's lovely farm home was the height of our trip! The facilities are wonderfully clean, bright and comfortable. The hosts are truly lovely people and Bridgette really puts on a killer breakfast. We only wish we had more time to spend here. Not only did Karl help us find a shop we were looking for, he led us to it when he went out on an errand of his own. A few miles down a pretty country road is a great German restaurant and spa. Staying at this farm is like staying with your family only better!

Hi Jana I would like to say that we had a wonderful time this Christmas with your dad Karl and Bridget. They were so kind and treated us like royalty. Your dad was a great tour guide and took us to those special Christmas stores in town. And Bridget with her delicious cooking, I must of gained 10 pounds. My family so enjoyed the snow and they even put a Christmas tree in our family room for us. We can't wait to come back in the summer to help with the honey and jelly. Jana thanks for arrainging everything it surley made things less stressful. My family again loved it all. God Bless. the Collets

Hi Jana, A quick note to tell you how much we enjoyed staying those two nights at the farm with your parents. We LOVED it! It was so nice of your dad to be outside waiting for us, I'm sure we would have spent quite a bit of time trying to pin point the exact location otherwise!! We fell in love with one of the kittens, wanted to take her with us! And the jam!!! We did take some of that home with us!! The most interesting thing was that I found out that my great great grandfather's second wife, Agnus Amelia Richter, was from Hartha! I have to investigate that a little more thoroughly!! Thanks again for a wonderful stay!!

Karl and Brigitte are wonderful hosts: gracious and kind. They are both eager to please and make you feel at home. The family farm has tons of character and you can not ask for a more romantic and serene setting. You can rent just one room and up to three...the private sitting area and kitchen is perfect for relaxing. For a bargin price after the big city of Dresden. I highly recommend this place if you are renting a car and going to visit the mineral museum in Freiberg, this place is for you! Down the road is a restaurant that gets high marks, and a lovely old aqua duct...just know it is not in Dresden (a 30-40 minute drive) and you will not be disappointed! Personally, we enjoyed being out of the big city and into the small towns...and the farm brought back memories of summers as a youth~ Try the home made jams and honey--unbelievably delicious.
