Nestled in the redwoods yet close to the Eel River and only 30 minutes to beautiful quiet beaches is this custom built house. There is lovely light from it's southern exposure and it is very quiet and private. This home is just off of the road via a private gravel drive, with no neighbors to bother you. Available for any questions that might arise is the property owner who resides part time on this 5 acres parcel. The property consists of a 25 year old orchard, small vegetable garden, pond, and established redwoods, rhododendrons and ferns. There is an adopted burro and a couple of barn cats. Within a 5 minute drive you'll find a bank, post office and markets. There are farmer's markets, organic produce farms, wineries, and cheese factories to visit too.
Humboldt County is home to many attractions year round. This is a perfect spot for bicyclists to practice for the Tour of the Unknown Coast or a family to celebrate the graduation of their child from Humboldt State University and/or College of the Redwoods. There is the well known Kinetic Sculpture Race that finishes in the nearby Victorian Village of Ferndale. Loads of hiking opportunities including Avenue of the Giants paths and many Redwood Parks. Lastly, Eureka and Arcata are only two of several towns that celebrate the arts with galleries open monthly on special evenings.
English, French and Spanish are spoken.

Beautiful little quiet cabin feel. This place has it all and then some...lovely redwoods right outside the door, flowers in the spring, and and everything to make your stay amazing! Jennifer was a jewel and checked on us to make sure we were doing okay. We brought so many things that we really didn't have to as everything is there for the perfect stay.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Our family of four really enjoyed staying at this wonderful rental! Jennifer was so helpful and the location could not have been better to see the Redwoods, hike, and take a private tour of the Eel River brewery. The property is very private but close enough to town for groceries or other needs. We also enjoyed Pepito, the rescued donkey that lives on the property, as well as the friendly dog and cats. We have stayed in many VCRBO properties from Canada to Texas and I would rate this property as one of the best!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We enjoyed our stay so much! Jen was a gem, made us feel very welcome and comfortable. We loved the property, very peaceful and green! We enjoyed using the grill on the back porch and just sitting outside (with the cats!!). The bed was very comfortable. We enjoyed getting a tour of Jen's art studio and even bought a print,. Now we have part of our visit hanging on our wall! Great location, spent the whole day hiking through Avenue of the Giants.Owner response: Thank you so much for your positive note and enthusiasm. I am happy to say that the original watercolor is on its way to you now. I look forward to opening up the photos sent to me earlier today. Just back from a long and busy day. All the best Jen

We really enjoyed our stay in this unique spot of earth. The owner is an artist and as such there are creative touches everywhere...from hand painted curtains to cushions to beautiful paintings. The house has it's own architectural charm that is designed around the beauty of the redwoods with two old giants trunks right outside. This is a great location for access to the grandeur of the area. We never got to meet the owner but she was delightful on the phone and from reading the previous reviews...her presence adds to the experience. Would say must have car unless you are really an avid biker! Really great sound system was a perk!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We visited the area for a family wedding and had a great time. We are a family of four and the 2 bedrooms were plenty spacious. Jennifer was a great hostess and her band of animals were always entertaining. My 2 kids, ages 7 and 8 loved to wake up in the morning and run outside to visit with the animals while we got breakfast ready. The property was so quiet and calm, you couldn't help but relax. The Redwoods were beautiful and with a little bit of driving you can visit a lot of small cute towns in the area. Our favorite place was Swimmer's Delight on the Eel River where the kids didn't want to leave. Thank you Jennifer for making our first trip up to Rio Dell a lovely experience!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

My friend and I spent a couple of nights at this delightful property and found the location excellent, and the space very inviting. There are lots of places to retreat, to exercise, and to meditate. Everything is lush and green, with a bonus of orchards and a garden. Enjoy the peace. It's found everywhere. The listing is accurate: the owner was extremely helpful with everything- directions, restaurants, beautiful off the path drives along the coast, and in the Redwood Forest. This property definitely has my recommendation for friends and /or relatives.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: I am always pleased to share my little paradise with new travelers. It is a joy for me to hear the excitement and the vision of each and every individual. You all bring a bit of magic through your own perception. I learn from all of you about what the property gives to each and every one of us. Thank you for your visions, the good discussions, the laughter and the sharing of a glass of wine. Looking forward to seeing you both again. And of course, curious about the route back that you ended up taking!

We had a great stay! Jen was very helpful and kind. This is a really cool spot in the country. Our expectations were exceeded, and we will definitely return when the opportunity arises.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway.
Owner response: It was lovely to meet you and know that the trails were just what you had hoped for and that our donkey Pepina got a nice gift from you in carrots. I will keep him combed and pampered till your return. The sun is out today and what a paradise when that occurs! Looking forward to next time. Thank you again for being gracious guests. Cheers, Jen

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1985
About the owner: I am a native California since the mid 1800's. I was raised in the Sacramento Valley. Beautiful, dry and hot. In 1977 In moved to Humboldt Countyand the frequent foggy mornings, winter rains, and a cooler more moderate climate to finish my Fine Art / French Language degrees at Humboldt State University. I have raised two lovely children here in the safe and quiet environment of the redwoods and Pacific Ocean. We always had the pleasure of visiting different parks and beaches at any whim. The wildlife and bird life here are exceptional. Marshes, dairylands, timber lands and rivers are but a part of the topography here. I continue to find it a perfect haven for a retreat center. I travel widely and yet am always thankful and awestruck when I return to this little 5 acre parcel nestled in the redwoods, 850 ' above sea level and most of the fog.... walking in these hills is an unending marvel of what our plant has to offer.
Why the Owner Chose Scotia:
Absolutely gorgeous environment and perfect for my art work. I am a studio artist that needs the peace and quiet of the redwoods.
The Unique Benefits at this Chateau / Country House:
Walking among the giants is like going back into time. The standing history of the Sequoia's is something to marvel at. At the river's edge of the Eel River where you can swim in summer months, I am rejuvenated. The bird life is abundant and there are diverse environments that are home to many different species whether fish, fowl or 4 legged creatures. The outdoor enthusiast can spend endless hours watching and learning in quiet solitude.
