Storybook HOUSE by the SEA is a magical 1912 summer home, at the choicest spot on the New England seacoast. Serenely presiding over its incomparable view and sugar-sand ocean beach, this home induces a bit of awe in passers-by, and fortunate vacation guests. Impressive (but not pretentious), ample but still intimate, House by the Sea is a yesteryear treasure, thoughtfully updated for your comfort, without sacrificing its authentic charm.

This is your place for romping at the beach, gazing at amazing ocean view, lolling in the hammock, spreading out your seafood extravaganza in the handsome beamed dining room or large breezy screen porch overlooking the sea, writing memoirs or painting watercolors on the veranda, rejuvenating in an incomparable time-stopping setting.

From your bedroom windows, drift off to sleep with the rhythmic drum of the sea's pounding surf, with a hint of salty sea life in the air. Before coffee, watch the red sun rise over the point, bathing the water with vivid reflections. Let the world stand still as the huge white moon eases up over the water, leaving rippling rays of silver moonlight that point right to your toes. (Over-the-top? No, this is written by the owner, who knows so well how amazing this experience is and will always be.)

There is something special about seeing the ocean surf through 100-year-old wavy glass. The living room has its original 1912 beams and wainscot, window seats, and antique carpenter details. Chairs line up on the veranda where you can watch a sunset or catch a glimpse of the big dipper signaling 'abundance' in the sky. A child's rope swing from a picturesque oak tree adds to the yesteryear peace and tranquility of this home.

Each of the 5 bedrooms has a view of the ocean. Three oceanfront bedrooms have spectacular ocean views. The largest bedroom is a bunk room for the kids and has two sets of bunk beds plus a single bed. There are three bathrooms. The upstairs main bath has a beautiful vanity and a large subway-tile shower with retro chrome valves and a rainfall shower. The first floor bath has a modern shower and front loading laundry. The third bath has its original footed tub updated with replica (but "to code") pressure/balanced/scald protection shower.

We recently completed some fantastic upgrades to this already wonderful home. See the photo showing the English Aga 6 burner 4-oven range, and the gorgeous new custom range hood. The drinks/coffee pantry is equipped with a Marvel 2-drawer refrigerator for white wine, seltzer, and soda pop. Honed black granite countertops look like soapstone but are easier to clean, and there's a bigger sink for lobster pots or toddlers next to the Bosch dishwasher. Just outside the cheerful kitchen, the barbecue patio gives you an exciting place to monitor your steaks and marvel at the ocean view.

Our hammock invites you to check out how your toes look with nothing but ocean-blue behind them. From lawn, porch, and house, you have 180-degree ocean views in an awesome coastal setting. (One guest told us it looks like Hawaii.) Sturdy (long) steps descend to the beach where white sand offers a soft landing. When tide goes out, pristine sandbars appear, with little tide pools for even the youngest waders and hunters for sea stars (starfish), sand dollars, and the amusing, tiny hermit crabs. A spectacle, indeed.

"House by the Sea" is one of the antique treasures on this beautiful New England coastline. It occupies a magnificent vantage overlooking the beautiful curve of Stage Point and the Manomet Bird Observatory. House by the Sea reigns in a peaceful neighborhood where nearby shingle style homes have been treasured, coddled, rejuvenated, and landscaped with gardens -- where neighbors walk their dogs and chat during morning strolls.

You can walk to the Manomet Library or the nicely provisioned wine shop. Stroll a block farther to the local grocery store, coffee shop, pizza place, and ice-cream stand. A mile car (or bike) ride arrives at the picturesque Lobster Pound on the rocky end of Manomet Point. Lobsters can be steamed to order, and they sell delicious gourmet crab cakes, clam chowder, and lobster bisque. Ready to fix, or ready to eat (an even better way to keep you out of the kitchen and in your chaise.) Not into seafood one night? Star of Siam is just up the road in a little wooded park. Foppiano's has abundant Italian fare. Rose & Vicky's, the Metro diner, Sweet Lemons -- the neighborhood had plenty to offer. House by the Sea is only a few miles south of downtown Plymouth, 45 miles from Boston, 60 from Providence (and Newport) -- fullsome destinations easily reached from your paradise on the sea.

We have high standards for your family vacation, and know how important these special times are to you. We invite you to examine our listings to evaluate each unique home. We work to create a beautiful and comfortable environment that will enable your family to say, "Wasn't that fantastic? We'll never forget that summer. When can we go back?"

Dramatic Antique "House by the Sea" Incomparable Oceanfront

Year Purchased: 2005

Why the Owner Chose Manomet

Manomet Bluffs is a sought-after antique neighborhood on the spectacular seacoast with Hawaii-like views and a vast sugar-sand beach. It's a quaint walking neighborhood, a yesteryear kind of destination where hundred year old homes and some other later homes are dotted along quiet tree-lined streets with gardens, bicycles, dog-walkers, children at play. You can walk to the wine shop, the library, the grocery store, the bakery, the pizza shop, the hair salon. There's a church, a bank, a hardware store, chinese takeaway, funky deli, funky icecream, friendly more than trendy. Some beach areas are very overcrowded with tacky tiny cheek-by-jowl rentals. Manomet Bluffs is a summering destination with lovely cottages and broad lawns and an easygoing attitude, almost upscale, never elite.

The Unique Benefits at this House

Our triple oceanfront lot allows for a broad expanse of rolling lawn and jaw-dropping panoramic ocean vistas. This view is the best of the best (not all ocean views are equal) with the exquisite advantage that both the sun rises and moon rises over the ocean are breathtaking and endlessly memorable. You'd think all oceanfront on the East coast gets moonrises and sunrises over the ocean - not so. Many are on land tilted north or south. But this is a prime and incomparable spot. I also has easy parking and long, substantial beach stairs gives you direct access to this awesome ocean beach.

A
Manomet Bird Observatory

Now renamed The Manomet Center for Conservation, this famous institute is tucked in the protected forest at the ocean's edge

B
Sea Cliff Lobster Pound

Quaint, picturesque, unforgettable seafood shop for lobsters, scallion crab cakes, beautiful fresh seafood, and friendly people. Set at Manomet Point with ocean all around you...

Superb location!

Aside from the breathtaking view, this home is a perfect location for a summer vacation. It is nestled away from traffic and noise, but is close enough to the essentials (grocery store, coffee shop, ice cream shop) to walk. Yet the restaurants and activies of Plymouth are close enough for a quick trip. Better yet, the Lobster Pound is nearby and will have your lobsters steamed and ready for you to pick up at the time you request. Great lobster, bisques, fresh fish, etc.The home is very comfortable and accommodating of a large famiy and/or friends. The front porch is a great gathering place for watching the sun rise, or with a glass of wine at dusk. The view is spectacular, and if forces relaxation. The beach is nice and we never experienced anything close to a crowd there. Younger children love to catch the hermit crabs that inhabit the shallow water. Families bring their dogs, play horseshoes and volleyball, and enjoy the atmosphere. Thanks, Robin, for sharing this wonderful property and for all of the thoughtful touches you add. We cannot wait to return!

(an email sent just before departing:) "Robin, I wanted to let you know that we have had an absolutely wonderful time at your "House by the Sea". The location was great for the day trips we took in various directions. But truthfully, who wanted to leave the house? I could have sat swinging on your porch for hours and never felt the need to get up. I enjoyed listening to the waves each evening and morning from the center bedroom and never minded the sun shining in my eyes at insanely early hours. Your home has made some unforgetable family memories. Thank you again and God bless you for sharing your home."

(from our Guest Book) "Robin, the house was great and we had everything we needed. It was terrific being so close to the beach, and being able to walk down to it was idyllic. We had a wonderful time walking on the beach and finding beautiful rocks and 1800s era pennies. Our dog loved it also, it was nice being able to bring him with us. Thank you." The Hagstroms.

(from a lovely, humorous email) "Dear Robin, as always, our experience with a Jareaux property was outstanding. I love - love - love to admire your decorating skills and your ability to retain the historic beauty of a home. We had a lot of fun debating for days about which place we liked the best, "SandyToes" or "House by the Sea." It was a very close contest and ended up being a draw...we concluded that SandyToes had a slight lead as a house, but that Manomet had a slight lead as a beach. Bottom line, we loved 'em both! You might be amused by this anecdote, as a contrast to the way you conduct your rentals. We belatedly decided we needed to rent a second, "lesser" house to accommodate any visitors that might come for a day or two to say hi to my parents...basically, we just wanted to have some bedrooms and showers available for them to use, if they chose to stay overnight. My husband, John, and I would stay at that house to oversee. The house rented for $2800 and was on Manomet Point. We arrived at 4:00, the designated check-in time. We walked in and found that the house hadn't been cleaned. We were welcomed by cigarette ashes in the sinks, dirty towels on the bathroom floors, unmade beds with the previous tenants' linens still on them, dirty dishes in the sink, etc. There was even a dog poo on the deck. So gross! As I was getting out my cell phone to call the landlord, he arrived at the house and explained they had been at a graduation (okay...?). So, we had to keep our luggage in the car and drive to HBTS while they cleaned. They called me at 8:30 p.m. (!!!) to tell me the house was now ready. True, the house was now spotlessly cleaned but, as they say, you only get one chance to make a first impression. Also, the house was essentially unusable for our first day and we were very disappointed. The house was subsequently referenced in conversation, for our remaining days, as The Dog Poo House. What else can you do but laugh...So, you see, you have spoiled us for life! Nothing else can ever come close to your house management skills, for our Massachusetts trips! My parents spoke glowingly about you and about how much I would like you if I met you. You made them feel very welcome. I am glad we had such a lovely place to celebrate. Dad has been battling cancer, so it is important for us to make these memories. Your properties are a like a box of gourmet chocolat

(from our guestbook) "House by the Sea" was the icing on the cake as we celebrated our 50th Anniversary with our family. We had many golden moments and everyone enjoyed this lovely home, interior and exterior, the porch, barbecue area, the beach, your beautiful flowers, the birds, the view, and on and on I could go. Every member of the family agreed that this was a great place for our celebration. Thank you so much. (Lisa and Michael did get to go to "SandyToes" - another jewel by the Sea. God bless ! --Louise and Larry Lynch
