(Disclaimer - this description needs editing!)
This is one of the most rare and wonderful oceanfront vacation homes on the New England sea coast. 'House by the Sea' is a home of substance and supersized-cottage style from a bygone era. The area is dotted with shingled homes w beautiful gardens. Restored yester-year charm (with modern upgrades for comfort, such as central air conditioning, modern antique-replica plumbing, a Bosch dishwasher, six-burner Aga stove, Sub Zero refrigerator), this home is idyllic and ideal for unforgettable family vacations. The broad oceanfront porches invite you to decompress by gazing at the incomparable view. Or spread out your lobster dinner on the big screened oceanfront porch, or nap to the sounds of the surf, check your email using Wi-Fi, loll in the hammock under the shade tree, seeing only your toes and the water beyond. This amazing house has 5 bedrooms (all w ocean views) 3 bathrms, beamed living room and dining rm, wraparound oceanfront porch, glowing maple floors, antique window glass. Impressive (but not pretentious), large (but still intimate), this is your place for romping at the beach, taking in the panoramic ocean , or maybe hanging out at the curved window seat overlooking the water, after preparing a mug in the coffee bar. With all the great seafood around, you'll want to create lively seafood tests in the modern vintage kitchen, choose between dining in the handsome wainscotted dining room with three sides flanked by windows, or semi alfresco on the screen porch, and drinks at sunset in the porch swing, needlepoint or napping, writing memoirs or painting watercolors, (or writing code for a great new App) swimming and sunning on the sandy beach (stairs go down from the property), and rejuvenating in an incomparable and memorable spot -- or enjoy exploring nearby historic Plymouth, Sandwich, the Cape and Islands. House by the Sea is decorated in restrained Nantucket style. Its oceanfront living has wainscotting, beams, paintings, and books.
A gas old-fashioned looking fireplace is dreamy in the 'shoulder seasons,' warming the adventurous soul in the colder weeks, contrasting the drama of the crashing waves below. The intimate living room opens to the beamed dining room with ocean views and a marvelous craftsman quality bay window seat. This is a perfect spot for memorable meals, board games, music, TV, or perfect silence in the evening. The pantry has wineglasses in racks, coffee maker, a stainless-steel two-drawer refrigerator for wine and seltzer, and a view onto a deck. The well-equipped kitchen has a new, six-burner electric Aga cooker, stainless steel refrigerator, and honed granite countertops. Adirondack chairs line up on the veranda where you can watch a sunrise over coffee or catch a glimpse of the big dipper on a mild summer night in New England.
A kitchen-side deck has a gas grill and patio table, umbrella and chairs. Picnic table on the lawn and a rope swing from a picturesque oak add to the yesteryear peace and tranquility of this incomparable home. There is something special about seeing the ocean surf, bluffs, and beach through 100-year-old wavy glass, vintage lilacs, happy birds, butterflies, and (depending on the season) seals frolicking offshore.
Each of the four bedrooms (plus a 5th bedroom which used to be the maid's private room, but which is now open to the stair railing, making an open loft) has a view of the ocean. Three oceanfront bedrooms have spectacular ocean views, antiques, and comfort, where you will fall asleep to the sound of the rhythmic surf below your window. The largest bedroom is a bunk room for the kids and has two sets of bunk beds plus an additional single bed.
Please ask about pets. We are careful that our Guests without pets have a pristine stay with no evidence that there has ever been a pet in the home. Our motto is 'no hair left behind' so we work mindfully with our guests who are trying to accommodate a lab, pug, golden, husky, and ask that they take their entire coat home with them....moreless

House by the Sea is located on a verdant stretch of coastline with awesome views and a sugar-sand beach about 50 miles south of Boston, 10 miles north of Sandwich, and 5 miles south of Plymouth Rock in downtown Plymouth. Logan Airport and Providence's TF Green airport are about equally convenient. Day trips to the Cape and Islands: A quick 15 minutes to the Sagamore Bridge, and from there 20 minutes to the ferry to Martha's Vineyard in Falmouth. The hamlet of Manomet is an old summering area with many old shingle style homes, cottages, all spread nicely apart with lovely lawns and well tended gardens. The neighborhood is serene and there are unpaved roads along the ocean and up to the Manomet Center for Conservation, for long walks with beautiful scenery. The town includes a good wine shop, small eateries, a library, CVS, a Stop N Shop, salon, pizzeria, banks. At Manomet Point: the Lobster Pound (a destination in itself) for crab cakes, lobster, oysters, and exquisite fish.
Other Activities: Historic areas, golf galore, Plymouth Rock, Mayflower
There are three bathrooms; two have modern showers, one has a footed tub updated with high-tech, vintage looking, pressure balanced/up-to-code scald protector shower valves. A hammock invites you to check out how your toes look with nothing but ocean-blue behind them. From lawn, porch, and house, you have 180-degree ocean views in an awesome coastal setting. (One person told us it looks like Hawaii.) Sturdy steps (quite a few steps, we must disclose!) descend to a private beach where white sand offers a soft landing. When the tide goes out, pristine sandbars appear, with little tide pools for even the youngest waders and hunters of sea stars (starfish), sand dollars, and the amusing, tiny hermit crabs.
You can walk to the Manomet Library or the nicely provisioned wine shop (which looked nicer when it was an old 1920s gambrell home but wasn't quite as popular.) Stroll a little farther to the local grocery store. A two-mile car (or bike) ride arrives at the picturesque Lobster Pound way out on Manomet Point, with surf lapping two sides. Lobsters can be steamed to order (less mess than cooking at home) and they sell delicious reinvented gourmet crab cakes (more eggy than bread-y, a real treat) along with clam chowder and lobster bisque. Helps keep you out of the kitchen and in your chaise.
Year Purchased: 2005
About: It seemed this house was always 'for sale.' Old, unrennovated, spectacular oceanfront. The movie star-beautiful elderly owner kept a permanent sign on the old garage with a price (hand) painted asking twice $$ the current market or what anyone wanted to pay. (It was way beyond my scope.) Years went by, the house was still for sale, sign on the garage...but not for $425k like in the last decade; now our petite titan wanted twice that. Knowing I could never afford it, I still thought I could suggest to her (now on speaking terms) how this dear lady might wrangle some tax advantage by moving in full time, staying, and saving the (gi-normous) gain. Never did I imagine I could figure out how to own it at her astronomical price. But the Boston RE market was surging; we sold our JP condo, cashed in my Keogh plan and bought it: rough, unrennovated, unheated, uninsulated, homasote dropped ceilings hiding the gorgeous original big-lumber framing from 1914. Every year has seen a big transfusion of green, lovingly upgrading this gray lady in a way that maintains its old charm. Year after year, better and better every year. We are grateful for the precious families who have fallen in love with it, and come back every year. We want to surprise them by making it just a bit more magnificent each year they return.
This incredible 1910 oceanfront 'cottage' was one of the first few built on these famously beautiful bluffs. If you see the antique postcards, this was an almost uninhabited coastline. Back then, you could choose the best spot. And even today, as a few homes grew up around this gracious lady of a home, they were of the time, vintage, nostalgic, yesteryear. The seller knew her stuff, and wanted much more than the market would bear, and it was way beyond my means. I bought a lesser house in the neighborhood. Then sold it. Then tried to help the seller with her sale to another buyer. It fell through. Then there we stood, she and I, with this house between us, and a shockingly high price I never thought a mere mortal could deal with. Then, with owner financing, some sacrifices, savings, and lots of sweat equity, House by the Sea became ours, at a staggering price, but with improvements long overdue. The house was very 'original' and, in some areas, not in a good way. But optimism was easy - this is nirvana. Each year, our investments in the home have brought it closer and closer to perfection. One of these days, we may even go beyond it! We've just added a powerful heating system, improved central a/c, next year, the Sub Zero. So it's not just for summer anymore--now you can come for long contemplative winter beach walks, and get cozy by the fire when you return, with your English pudding in the Aga. Not only are summers a dream-come-true, but now fall and winter, too.
