Two-bedroom, guest house in a 16th century farm complex on 7 acres of Normandy’s greenest pasture, situated in the middle of a national park. The guest house was fully renovated in 2008 but maintains the look and feel of the original building.

Original stone walls, original beams and antique tiled floors combine with a 21st century kitchen and bathroom plus roomy bedrooms to make this an authentic and comfortable home away-from-home.

Downstairs offers a large kitchen/dining room and salon. Upstairs you will find one queen-bedded room, one twin-bedded room and one bathroom with shower. Luxurious sheets and towels provided.

The farm is not a working property. Our neighbor grazes his prize charolet cows on 5 fenced acres. The animals do not have access to our courtyard nor the private garden area. There is an apple and pear orchard behind the guest house. Garden furniture and barbeque provided for you to enjoy the long, warm summer evenings.

Le Perche is truly the unsung gem of Orne, birthplace of the majestic Percheron horse breed and second home to many savvy Parisians, artists and writers. In fact, the New York Times calls Le Perche, “The Last Terroir.” If you Google "Le Perche" you will see an article from the New York Times Magazine dated March 2007 which fully describes the charms of this region.

Nearby you’ll find a challenging 18-hole golf course in Bellême, well-kept tennis courts, trout fishing, the National Stud Farm, famed forests with mushrooming expeditions in the autumn months, untold numbers of country manor houses and castles to explore, reasonably-priced antiques, fine dining, artisanal cheese makers, chocolate makers, organic farmers, even an organic snail farm.

Our farm is in the tiny hamlet of Le Gué de la Chaine, 3 kilometers from Bellême and 6 kilometers from the regional capital of Mortagne au Perche. Travelling by car, you are 2 hours from Paris, 2.5 hours from the channel coastal resorts and landing beaches and 2 hours from the Loire Valley. There is good train service to all parts of France from the neighboring town of Nogent le Routrou.

Heaven On Earth

My family and I were able to stay in this wonderful little cottage. It was just the perfect size for a family of 4, with a large bedroom for my husband and I and two twin beds for the children. There was a wonderfully large backyard with fruit trees that we were able to enjoy, apples, pears and plums. We could easily walk 5-10 minutes to a boulangerie and have wonderfully fresh pastries and baguettes. I would recommend making it to any of the nearby farmers market's and stocking up with the wonderful produce, meats and home cooking. The cottage was clean and very well proportioned, we were able to do our laundry and hang it out to dry, But the best part was how wonderful Margaret was in helping us plan this wonderful holiday. I would highly recommend this beautiful property and we can't wait to go back someday soon.

We enjoyed our time in your lovely cottage. Everything was so restful for us. Thank you for your sincere thoughtfulness. We'll miss the birds waking us up, the lilacs, our walks through town and especially this cozy cottage.

Peaceful

From the very beginning, Margaret was a joy to deal with and quick to respond. The cottage is in a lovely area and decorated simply and tastefully. If you're looking for a quiet, peaceful, non touristy, beautiful area to drive and visit, then this is the place to come. Belleme is 5 minutes drive away and I suggest going to their tourist office as they're helpful and make dinner reservations for you. The whole area is picturesque and people are lovely, pleasant and go out of their way to help you. The cottage has everything you need, comfy beds and great shower. A great place to get away from it all.

Perfect Balance of Luxury and Countryside charm

Guest: Paul (Sausalito)
Date of Stay: 07/10/10 Review Submitted: 09/08/10

My wife and I stayed here for a week this past July and had the most wonderful time. The house has been beautifully restored and exceeded my expectations. We ended up driving all over Le Perche going to farmers markets, tasting bread, and marveling at the gorgeous sunflower fields. Definitely worth every penny and would stay here again in a heartbeat. Paul PS: I loved the exposed beams upstairs!

Photos of this wonderful place just can't do justice to its charm, comfort and authenticity... we spent this past June and July (2009) here, and never wanted to go home! The area is so picturesque and unspoiled (rolling fields of poppies and sunflowers), the local people so friendly... fantastic open markets in all the surrounding villages and towns... it's a food lover's paradise... visits to the local growers, artisan bakers, cheesemakers, etc. make great entertainment for your mind as well as your palate. Whether your idea of fun is sport (golf, tennis, hiking, riding) or just relaxing with a book, this perfectly equipped property really fits the bill. We still miss it and intend to go back soon!

My wife and I stayed in the guest house in September 2008 for 1 week. A beautiful cottage for one or two couples or a small family. Recently restored with all the modern conveniences. Numerous restaurants, shops and attractions within a few minutes by car. Very peaceful and quiet setting. Golf de Belleme is an excellent course, reasonably priced and 2-3 minutes by car. A great choice for people wanting to experience small towns in France. Reasonable fluency in French is very helpful but not mandatory.
