This home was recently on Summit County's "Green Homes Tour" and was a favorite of many. While it was not the fanciest or biggest home on the tour (1,750 square feet not including the garage), it has many appealing features: Solid wood beams hand-crafted from local pine-beetle kill, passive solar windows that let warming winter sunlight filter down through the beams of the 20-foot high ceiling upstairs, whole log accents throughout the house, outside walls made of recycled Styrofoam (85% post-consumer waste) blocks which give excellent insulation value, insulated hemp curtains that keep the house cozy-warm on even the coldest winter nights. We just added photovoltaic solar panels to our roof last year, and have added a wood stove this summer.

You approach the house on a bike path (access by cars is allowed for several houses), but this makes the neighborhood secluded and quiet in winter. Our property is bordered on two sides by open space - low willows, aspens and a beaver-pond "lake" that forms a large snow field in winter. The mountain views are spectacular, with "Peak One" (of the Tenmile Range) out the front door, "Mount Royal", "Buffalo & Wichita Peaks" (of the Gore Range) off the side, and "the Continental Divide" looming in the distance across the beaver pond of the back yard. The houses nearby range from historic one-room cabins, to large mountain and modern second homes.

The best part of this house is the easy access to Frisco's Main Street and nearby ski resorts, while being able to get away from the crowds, in a forested winter wonderland. A dog and two children live here on a regular basis, so they are welcome on your vacation - and might even enjoy the games, toys and movies that we leave out. In our kitchen is a "wedgewood" gas stove from the 1950's (with constantly burning pilot lights) which add a historic feel in the middle of other modern appliances (stainless steel fridge and dishwasher).   • Our house is at the trailhead to "Rainbow Lake" above (South) Frisco - a picturesque one mile hike each way. Skiing at Copper Mountain is 7 miles away (free bus directly from Frisco, with stops 1 mile from the house). Cross-Country skiing at Frisco Nordic Center is 1 mile from the house. Breckenridge, Keystone, A-Basin, Vail, Beaver Creek, and Loveland ski areas are all 15-35 minutes from the house.
