I did not have high expectations before I left on my trip. When I arrived in Costa Rica, I was pleasantly surprised. I had excellent transportation to and from the airport. The grounds of the residence and interior were well maintained. The pool and ocean view were great to see every morning I stepped out of the house. There was wifi access and I felt secure at all times. Most importantly, the concierge was friendly, prompt, and well informed. I could not have had a better trip. I hope I can come back and stay here again.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

Review Title: Catered by the best Review Text: We recently spent a week a the macaaw beachhouse and let me tell you it was just what we needed. Lots of R&R with no worries in a foriegn country thanks to the staff that lives nearby and at your fingertips with just a call or shout. Sal and Roxy made sure we got whatever we needed when we needed it. Pampering at it's best. They would often go out of their way to make our stay unforgetable. One day I talked about a recent kidney stone bout that I had and the next day Roxy was out buying me coconut water to help dissolve future stones. I was blown away. Tasty as well. Another time we were going to be celebrating my 50th B-day and when we got back to the property they had all this fresh Sea Bass that they had bought and ended up cooking the best seafood dinner that we ever tasted. You've read about her guacomolie, well everything she cooks is a treat. Sal is much more then a property manager, he is everything, conceirge, chueffer, you name it. The wealth of information this man retains is amazing. He was always looking out for us before we ventured away for the day. And his bilingual language was a lifesavor. Also got us discounts on zip-lining. We went down south for a few days after our stay here and couldn't understand anybody, it was quite frustrating. We loved the beautiful grounds, gated and very private, and very safe, the pool was awesome, food awesome and comfortable furnishings. Watched scarlet macaws fly by just about everyday, saw a toucan, lots of different types of eguanas, huge beautiful butterflies, the parrots. When Sal tells you not to leave anything outside overnight he means anything. The little racoon looking things stole my glasses and Sals cell phone that we left on the patio the first night. Sal was able to find most of his phone but not the casing. Sorry. We are a pretty well traveled but we have never been pampered like we were here at such a great rate. When we go to C.R. in the future we will be looking up Sal and Roxy.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My family and I stayed here for a week and love it! The houses are surrounded by natural beauty and a beach! What else can you ask for! The property has many different fruit trees depending on the time of the year you will get to taste/ eat various fruits. If you like seafood all you have to do is walk on the beach to your right and all the local fisherman bring their catch to sell and there is also a restaurant that sells wonderful dishes. The next morning from our arrival we simply grabbed a cooler and sat on the beach drinking beers and listening to music! There is a lady that can cook breakfast, lunch or dinner at the house, we had most of our meals prepared and this lady can cook! Sal, the property manager is very helpful and can direct you / suggest anything you might want to go see or place to visit.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We arrived with a large group - 3 families and used all three houses. The first night we were greeted by Sal who stayed up late for our arrival. We enjoyed some of the incredible Guacamole others have written about and bedded down for the night. It was a great way to arrive. Houses The pool house is really fantastic and where we spent most meals. Roxy did an incredible job cooking a variety of good meals and also provides copious amounts of delicious coffee. All amenities worked and the wifi at the other houses was very appreciated. Overall very quit and peaceful. Iguanas abound and we even saw a Scarlet Macawa during breakfast one day! Beach The beach is fun. A good safe place to swim with warm water and gentlr waves. You can walk for miles in either direction and experience everything from fine white sand to big rocks for sitting and reading on. Sal even helped us make a bonfire one night- we had a good time singing and watching the flames rise into the night air. People The folks here (sal and Roxy in particular) are really helpful and kind. Sal is always available to help and gives good tips on local activities. we felt welt taken care of and enjoyed getting to know him and team. This was a highly enjoyable Costa Rica experience for us and it struck the right balance between comfort and authenticity. Go got it!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

2 separate couples stayed at this estate from November 19-26, 2012. We only used the house with the pool. The house had 3 bedrooms with queen size beds in 2 of the rooms and 2 beds in the 3rd bedroom. There is a safe in 1 bedroom that was a nice amenity. The decor could use some updating (curtains, bedding, mattresses, kitchen pans, utensils & air conditioners). 1 bedroom had a new quiet air conditioner but the other 2 bedrooms had window air conditioners that were very noisy which makes sleeping difficult and if you shut it off it does get warm in the room for sleeping. Only 1 bedroom has a TV and the other TV is in the living room that is not air conditioned. All of the other bedrooms in the other houses do not have TV's either. The view from the porch is very beautiful and we spent a lot of time on the porch and in the pool. There are plenty of trees and foliage around the house that make the views even more attractive. Wi-Fi can only be obtained in the 2nd house on the property so you will need to go to that house for internet service. The FREE international phone calling is only in the 3rd house. The beach consists of black sand and maintained well by the staff supervisor. About 10-15 feet from the beach there is a rock barrier that can only be seen in low tide, so be aware of this if you are going to be swimming in the ocean. There is a guard dog chained up on the property (can't be seen from any house) and when people are on the beach, the dog will bark until they are gone. Housekeeping is done every day by cleaning the kitchen, dishes, bathroom and making the beds. You need to request new towels when you need them since they are not changed every day (Costa Rica is big on conserving their resources). The staff is very helpful and they will help you in any way possible to make your stay more enjoyable. You will have a cell phone with the staff contacts in the phone so you can contact them when you are at the property or out and about. Overall the staff provided excellent customer service. The pricing discounts are very nice and make this property even more attractive to frugal travelers who want at least a 3 star rental.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/4

We stayed at the Macaw Beach House July 13-21, 2012 for my husband's 40th birthday. This was our first time to Costa Rica and we could not have been more pleased with the Macaw Beach House. The property is absolutely beautiful with the property being right on the ocean, the lush tropical gardens that surround you, the abundance of animal life and your very own pool. What more could you ask for? We stayed in the pool house which was very clean and just the right size for us. The only issue we had with the beach house was the water pressure for the shower and the water filter system. But a short stroll to the cottage and you had a shower with wonderful water pressure. This is normal for most places as it is the way the water has to fall to the house in order to have lots of water pressure in foreign countries. The best part about this property is the property staff. Roxy is the cook and maid for your stay and boy can she cook. We went fishing several days in Quepos with John Schuchert with Quepos Fish Adventure. We bought back our catch of Mahi Mahi and Yellow Fin Snapper and Roxy cooked us some wonderful meals. One of the dishes included 18 ingredients and we actually requested she make it twice. Her fresh pineapple juice, salsa, and guacamole are to die for. I don't think there is anything Roxy can not cook that would not taste absolutely wonderful. Make sure you have her cook your meals while you are there. I suggest differently having Roxy cook your meal upon arrival so you can become relaxed after your arrival. The Staff Supervisor (Sal) is just wonderful. From the time you step on the property he makes you feel right at home. He knows the country and he can suggest things to do while you are on your vacation and hook you up with the right tours at the right price. We asked him for suggestions for a Zip Line Tour Company and he suggested Chiclet's which is one of the oldest Zip Line Companies in Jaco Area. We had the best time with the Chiclet's guys as we went on the 7:00am tour and we were the only people on that tour, so it was like our own private Zip Line Tour. We are from Georgia and we are use to really White Sandy Gulf Of Mexico Beaches and if you are adventurous Sal can tell you how to find one in Costa Rica right down the street. He can hook you up with suggestions of great restaurants and a horse back tours to an amazing waterfall. If you need anything Sal is there for you. One of our best vacations.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3

Eight family members went to Macaw Beach for one week after attending my niece's graduation. From the first time we contacted Sal, the caretaker, by e-mail, we had a very good feeling about the place. Sal answered our every stupid question and concern quickly and effectively. This continued during our stay, with the addition of suggestions for activities, restaurants, taxi, car rental, etc.etc. Sal speaks fluent English and was extremely instrumental to our total enjoyment of our stay. The very large property is divided into three separate houses. The main house by the pool, with fully equipped kitchen, three bedrooms and one bathroom proved perfect for the two older members of the family as it was all on one level - no stairs, as well as for the 14 year old (television in one bedroom and the living room). We all used it as our base to meet up for meals, hanging out and swimming in the pool. The second and third houses are situated across an open lawn, about 50 metres away. The path can be a little dark at night although there is a light on a motion sensor at one point. The second house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. One very large bathroom with a jacuzzi upstairs and a small one downstairs along with a living/dining area and large kitchen (not equipped) . There is also a large patio upstairs. The third house is much smaller with two bedrooms and one bathroom, we did not use this one as we had enough space in the other two. We just loved the macaws flying overhead and in the cage, the iguanas sunning on the roof and the mangoes and star fruit available all around us. The beach is rocky with black sand but ok for a short walk. There are also kayaks available for use at any time. The housekeeper Roxina is another gem. Besides keeping everything neat and tidy, she makes lovely guacamole and salsa and will cook for a small charge. On our return home, Sal contacted us to ask if we had forgotten a couple of items. He then mailed them to us even though we could not figure out how to pay him back, (they do not accept credit cards and have no mail service). We really enjoyed our stay at Macaw Beach and would certainly recommend this property.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/3

I don't know what is better, the house or the people that run it!! Went there for spring break with 9 people and had tons of room, each of the 3 houses are all brand new and are right next to each other. The pool was awesome and you also have the beach 15 feet past the bird cage full of parrot's that mock every noise you make! The property supervisor was the best and took care of everything we needed from setting up a ride to pick all of us up at the airport to making runs to the grocery store. He also knows Costa Rica like the back of his hand, he set up all of our tours to water falls for us and made sure that we never overpaid for anything. Make sure you do not waste time and go to restaurants because the Chef is unbelievable and cooked for only 25$ a meal for 9 people and her food was incredible. if you do want to walk 100 feet to the restaurant a couple times just for the drinks, thats what we did and you have a 5 to choose from. There are plenty of houses in Costa RIca to rent, but next time I will be renting this one just because the people that take care of you there make it the best, and most amazing vacation you can have without all of the hassel of trying to do things yourself in a foreign country. Hope this helps.... There are many rentals in tropical places that are beautiful, but what sets this property apart and above other rental places are the two people working there: Sal and Roxinia (“Roxy”). Sal is always there to help you. When we arrived Sal told us that he would pick up groceries for us as many times during the day as needed. This is a huge perk for tourists without a car. Sal also had wonderful suggestions as to what to try, including guanabana. The only time that I had ever seen this fruit before Costa Rica, was on the tv show, Bizarre Foods. Apparently, guanbana has many health benefits. After Sal picks up the fruit, he gives it to Roxy to blend into a refreshing and tasty drink. We enjoyed horseback riding. There is a nearby riding facility that is very reasonable in price. Sal was able to get us a much better deal after he spoke with them. I went riding three times. The scenery is breathtaking, and the guide is very friendly. During the rides, I saw beautiful landscapes, rolling hills, a cashew tree, many Brahman cattle, horses frolicking around in a pasture, and interesting birds. After your ride, you are served fresh pineapple and watermelon and bottled water. Although that horseback riding place is only a few minutes away by car, on one day we took a cab for a two hour ride to a horseback riding place that takes you to a stunning waterfall. Breakfast and lunch are included with this ride. Although a bit far, it is well worth it. We also went zip lining. The kids liked it so much that they went a second day. Sal was able to get us a cheaper rate on the taxis then we were able to get on our own. What helped make this a true vacation is that wherever we went or whatever we did, when we returned back to the house Roxy had a wonderful meal waiting for us. We asked her to make fresh guacamole with every meal as it was so good. Also, with almost every meal we ate, we asked for Pico Di Gallo. Don’t let the name fool you. Although it translates in English to “rooster’s beak,” it has nothing to do with chicken. Pico Di Gallo is classic tomato salsa that is versatile and can go on many different types of dishes. When we were not traveling around, the pool was enjoyed. It was always clean and well maintained. In the evening, we usually talked for a few hours in the comfortable rocking chairs made of wood and leather. After that, we retired to our bedrooms, which are kept cool by the room air conditioners.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This was my second time arranging for a group of 20 to 30 somethings to go on a trip using vacation rental by owner. The property description sounded almost too good to be true…if anything it was the opposite, this property is amazing beyond description. 11 of us went for the week in mid-May and have nothing but great things to say about our experience. Sal, the property manager and concierge, was responsive from the start of the process a couple months ahead of the trip to after the process wrapping up the security deposit. He provided detailed pertinent information to help us plan the trip prior to coming. Upon arrival he was available as needed and arranged for all trips, food, and anything else we requested. He said there was nothing he was not willing to help with to make our trip the best one ever and he meant it. Roxy, the maid and chef, was also great. She discretely kept the property spotless every day. We had her cook several meals for us and each one of them was superb. We were impressed with her ability to cook anything requested from authentic local food to any back home favorites. I like to explore the world and rarely plan trips to go back to the same place but my experience at Macaw beach with the property and the staff are making it very tempting to plan a repeat trip in the future! I would recommend this property to all family and friends without hesitation.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

Our family stayed for 3 weeks and included 20 people including grandparents, adults, teenagers and children 5 through 12. Sal and the staff did verything possible to make our stay truly a wonderful experience that exceded all our expectations. We did not have one bad experience. Sal was able to provide all our transportation needs in a timely manner along with advice and recommnedations on trips and activities. Without his input we would not have had the high value experience we had. The facility is great because it is comfortable for all and you feel that you are immmersed in the environment. If you are patient all the creatures will wander by for you to see. The macaws were beautiful along with all the other birds. The meals provided by Roxy were fabulous and the care of the grounds and pool were professionally done. We are recommending Macaw Beach villas to our friends and families and some are planning on going there. It was simply a wonderful time which we all now miss greatly.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

We went zip lining ,fishing, the crocodile tour and the best was the waterfall tour recommended by Sal. It was the most beautiful place any of us have ever seen in our lives! When traveling with a group to a foreign country and to an unknown place of stay, one is always a bit concerned. Are the pictures real and will the property live up to expectations? Is the management friendly and cooperative? How can we work to fulfill the needs of each person and still manage to make it a good experience for the group overall? As the coordinator for the company retreat trip…these were among the many concerns I had when I first contacted Salvador at Macaw Beach in Costa Rica. From the first conversation, which was conducted in English, much to my relief, I was aware that I had found what had the potential to be a very good option for our group. Salvador was informative and helpful via phone and email, assisted in transportation arrangements from the airport to the property, and even took the time to shop for food and had a delicious locally flavored meal prepared for our arrival with plenty of iced down beverages. It was quite a welcome. to the group of weary travelers. As we turned into the property I could feel the stress roll off and looked on in delight at the beauty that surrounded us. Macaw Beach is located in Jaco, Costa Rica and is a 3 acre property that has hundreds of feet of beach frontage. Manicured grounds mixed with local trees and flowers surrounded the three separate houses with delightful winding paths between them filled with lush greenery and flowers. The Pool House is in the center of the group and has a large covered patio with large tables in place for dining. The house looks out over a beautiful and refreshing pool, where we all spent a lot of time during the days and nights. There is even a delightful bird aviary near the pool with some birds who are clearly accustomed to visitors and pick up phrases to chat with you very quickly. Local wildlife was part of the charm and I can only wonder at how many photos were taken of the macaws in the trees, the pelicans on the beach and the baby iguana and parents on the rooftop! I stayed in the pool house and was delighted with the beautiful craftsmanship of the home, which was made of local stone, tile and teakwood. Each room was beautifully decorated and had air conditioning for those who needed it… fully appointed kitchens were available for use… and there was even a jacuzzi tub in one of the houses! Each house had a unique style that sported things like wrap around porches, a second floor sleeping area and much more! The staff provided daily cleanRecommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

What can I say other than we had a fantastic experience! In advance of our arrival, Sal arranged several tours for us, a driver to meet us at the airport, and had lunch prepared for us when we arrived. We arrived later than expected so Sal even suggested to cancel our appointment for that day in order to let us relax and ease into the week ahead, great suggestion. The house was fresh and clean, the grounds were beautiful, the staff was friendly and attentive. We had a driver for the whole week and Sal and he got us going on time and somehow managed to get the five of us to our next event on time every time, not always easy to do with my family. I would highly recommend Macaw Beach to anyone and any party. The center hours with the pool is where we stayed since we had 5 people and it fit us just right. The larger house is some of the coolest design and teak that I've ever seen and I'd love to stay there next time. As I said, Sal arranged all of our excursions based upon our preferences, we did snorkeling, zip-lining and horse back riding to the Nayauca Falls (a must) and all of the guides where top notch, safe, and extremely enjoyable. Sal did insist that the falls be done the last day, as a grand finale, and my 19 year old son was not looking forward to horseback riding, afterwards he admitted that it was his favorite excursion! Sal is a master at accommodations and seems to know everyone! Some advise; Let Sal handle all of your arrangements; while we got a van and driver, I think a good GPS and great directions form Sal would have worked, especially if you have extra time to get lost, Have Roxinia cook for you - outstanding and I think the five of us went through 10 bags of chips eater her delicious Pico de Gallo and Guacamole. We only had her prepare one meal for us and wish we had done more, plan some meals in advance since you'll have to buy the food for her to cook. We were a bit unprepared and couldn't decide what we wanted to eat so our meals were a bit odd (steak and mostly American meals). Last piece of advise; if you go there during your home's winter (we went in January which was cold in NJ), prepare and pack clothes for going home in. We went horseback riding the last day in our jeans and sneakers, they were so muddy and smelly we could not wear them home so we came home in our shorts and flip flops, which wasn't bad until we had to walk through the snow to get our car! Puna Vida! Thanks Sal for a great week!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks for the kind words. The Villas at Macaw Beach understand that our guests have a limited amount of time to see and enjoy Costa Rica. Whether you are looking to just slow down and relax around the pool or you are looking for an action packed tropical adventure, including zip-lining, horseback riding to waterfalls, sports fishing, surfing, and many others, you can count on our staff to help you with sugestions to enjoy the vacation of a life time! We reserved the Villas at Macaw Beach a year in advance because there were 19 of us and we needed a lot of bedrooms. We were not disappointed. I corresponded with the propery manager via email on many questions I had to prepare for the vacation. He was very helpful; even arranging a bus and driver that picked us up in San Jose and stayed at the compound; available to us all week long. The manager is very knowledgeable and gave us great advice as to where to go and what to see; helping us make arrangements and reservations. Nothing disappointed us including the staff cook who we hired and prepared delicious evening meals. The best part was the pool for the kids which the staff cleaned every morning. The kids were in it morning, noon and night. If you want elegance go to the Marriott but if you want friendly, helpful and delightful staff come here.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children.
Owner response: Wonderful and gracious guests, like your family, make our job enjoyable. We hope that the next time you visit the beautiful country of Costa Rica, you consider the Villas at Macaw Beach again. It is our pleasure to serve you! Our first trip to Costa Rica. Staying at Macaw Beach was '' fantastic''. The ride from the airport was interesting and not very long. The grounds at Macaw Beach are truely spectacular. Perhaps better than described in the previous reviews. You really feel comfortable, right at home . Completely safe and well taken care of. From management to staff our exsperience was absolutely first class. Completely exceeded my expectations. All activitiy reservations and suggestions were arranged by the supervisor . He is very knowledgeable and very fluent english speaking. You absolutely cannot go wrong with his recceomendations. From Zip Linig, Forest walks, ATV or fishing. There is certainly plenty to do . Just set by the pool or walk the beach and make your next activity decision. Or just relax and listen to the ocean. We dined in with some local fresh catch and it was expertly prepared by the Macaw Beach staff. Along with some traditional Costa Rican side dishes. Bon Apitito ! In summary, making vacation decisions is difficult. Going back to Macaw Beach is really a simple decision. Its like having a tropical home away from home. Truely Fantastic!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

How do I start to try to put into words how magnificent our trip was to Villa Macaw Beach. The property is so exquisite and safe. You have fresh coconuts, star fruit, mango, water apples, caskew and almonds, and too many beautiful landscaped plants to name. We ony used 2 of the houses, which are well maintained and very clean. The restaurant Steve & Lisa is walking distance and very good and friendly. You must eat at the restaurant that is close to the Arenal Volcano. A Must! Just ask Danny the name! Sal and Danny(tour guide) took such good care of us. Having your personal driver/guide and consiere service (Sal) you have no worries. It is a little scary at the airport in San Jose if you do not book your ground travel arrangements prior to arriving. They bombard you-- thank heavens Danny was there to get us with the bus. The tours at the zip line and falls were so good with small children(4,6, &8). They made them so confident in themselves, they were never scared to be on the zipline with them or to ride a horse by themselves. The youngest kept telling us that she made 2 new friends on the trip. What great friendly people live in Costa Rica. Our family ( 5 adults and 4 children) took our first trip to Costa Rica. What a fabulous place!!! Sal had all of our food and drinks there when we arrived. He then went to the store to meet any of our needs. Roxina cooked fabulous meals, especially the fresh fish we caught. We went to the zip line, waterfalls by horseback, kayak and snorkelling, Arenal volcano, fishing in the bay, and learned a lot about the culture. Sal never let us down. He made it such a special trip. Danny was wonderful with all of us, especially my grand daughters. He TRIED to teach them La Coucarocha. They had a blast trying to learn it though. We will never forget Sal, Danny, Roxina and Victor. PURA VIDA!!!!!!!!!!!!! 10 of us recently had the pleasure of vacationing at this property for 7 days. Words are not adequate to express how pleasant our stay was at the facility. The staff supervisor was always available for any questions we might have had, recommendations for tours and restaurants, and medical emergencies (which we had). If we needed anything, the staff supervisor did his best to make sure we were accommodated including running errands for food, beverages or last minute souvenirs. And always with a smile! The staff was on hand everyday for maintenance and cleaning, never interfering. We ordered a cook for one night and had one of the best dinners with freshly caught Corvina (Sea Bass). Our only regret as that we didn't take advantage of that service more. The location was quiet and sedate with spectacular views. The housing was clean and comfortable. We were visited by scarlet macaws and iguanas. We drank straight from coconuts and were able to pick fruit off the trees for the parrots in the bird house, as well as, for ourselves. Overall, our stay couldn't have been more perfect. If you are looking for a place relax and unwind, then look no further, this is it!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: We at Macaw Beach Resort would like to thank our guests for their kind words. Managing a private resort is not just providing clean linens and a clean pool. We had a wonderful stay at Macaw Beach Resort in January, 2010. The facility was awesome - truly there are three separate houses on this beautiful compound and it really is directly on the beach. The staff were even more awesome, providing excellent advice and recommendations without ever feeling intrusive. For example, Sal helped us find a local rodeo in Herradura - a very unique, non-touristy experience that we would have otherwise missed. While you'll need a car to get around, there is a very good restaurant just a short walk down the beach and an easy breakfast place across the street. There is small fishing village nearby, and we bought lobster and snapper and cooked them on the grill next to the pool. The facility is great, but the Macaw Beach staff get credit for making this vacation a tremendous success - thanks Sal!! We can't wait for our next trip!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My Boyfriend and I visited Costa Rica last winter (Jan 2010) for our "Trip of a Lifetime" and stayed at quite a few resorts as we toured the country from San Jose, to Arenal Volcano, Manuel Antonio, and the northwest coast. We made our headquarters for the trip at the "Villas of the Macaws", just outside of the beach town of Jaco, which was a terrific central location for us, just an hour from the airport in San Jose, or an hour to Manuel Antonio to the south. As we traveled about the country, it seemed that we couldn't wait to return to our home away from home at the "Villas of the Macaws". Of all the places we visited, this was by far the best. What makes this resort so unique and enjoyable is not only it's perfect location right on the beach, but the peaceful, warm and welcoming feeling that you are truly at home in paradise. The villa provided us with an English speaking concierge who was very entertaining and gracious & always within reach via a local cell phone the villa provided us at check in. This gave us the perfect combination of assistance and privacy. I had read in some reviews that the beach is rocky, partially true, but the beach has many personalities. What is so awesome about Costa Rica is that the endless miles of coastline provide hundreds of beaches, each with their own character. For instance, a short 2 minute stroll down the beach from the Villas, you will find a cocoa colored, powder smooth beach (w/great photo ops). A short walk beyond, a Waterfall! As you stroll along the beach you will see a Tropical Rain Forest rising to the east and views across the blue Pacific Ocean to the west that will make you feel like you have discovered the land that time forgot! Pelicans soar and dive for fish against a backdrop of tropical islands and magnificent cloud formations. I am so glad that we stayed the majority of our trip at the Villa of the Macaws (Yes you will see Scarlet Macaws) instead of one of the large and impersonal hotels. Our stay in the Tamarindo Best Western for instance was accompanied by an all night DJ party, just outside our room. Additional features at the Villas: A gorgeous inground pool, charcoal & gas grill for barbecues, lush tropical gardens, Fishing trips right off the beach, natural beauty and tranquility, spacious outdoor Lanai, amazing sunsets, Coco Locos (cocktail in a coconut right off the tree!), Kayaks, privacy & security. In Jaco: lots of great restaurants, shops and fun stuff-the zipline is a must!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks for the kind words Gloria & Tim. Glad you enjoyed yourself as much as we enjoyed having you as guests! Yes, when I walk the beachfront I am also taken back by the beauty of this natural paradise. The day that I get tired of seeing a flock of Scarlet Macaws flying across the sky, is the day I know I should retire! We hope to see you again soon. Sincerely . Staff supervisor

I am a USMC veteran and an active police officer that needed a vacation. The rates were one of the best I could find and a friend told me this was the place to go. Going to a new place the owner helped get me settled in and was extremely helpful. The landscape and waves from the ocean set the stage for a relaxing time. In the morning I would get up and go fishing for a few hours (not a good fisherman, but I caught one nice one). I would then go to one of several nice cantinas across the street and one overlooks the ocean (awesome). The concierge set up some tours of the mountains and local villages which was not on the normal tourist map. He also gave me great advice when I went into Jaco to shop and see the beach and other sites. Right down the street was a fishing camp and fresh fish daily. One day a (good) cook came and cooked it up at the house and it was great. Also saw the crocodile river and went on a zip line tour. However, the best part of the whole trip was relaxing in the pool, drinking a beer, looking at the ocean and wildlife right off the porch. I saw large Iguanas, road runners, hawks, etc. As for the rooms they were very clean and a maid was arranged by the owner which made the beds daily and kept it very clean. I would also note that the owner saved me alot of money by arranging transportation and as a guide. I saved alot of time for fun events because he made all the arrangements for me saving me from trying to figure it out myself. I would like to say something bad about my time but I really cant. Most know how stressful vacations can be, but the accommodations, sights, fishing, beautiful scenery, and concierge assistance made this trip totally relaxing. I plan on returning beginning next year. Thanks to the staff for making this a great trip.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We arrived at the property after a beautiful drive through the Costa Rican Mountains following our private guide that was arranged by the proprietor. The staff was incredibly accommodating and made the stay so much more enjoyable due to slight language barriers we were surprised that we had no problems communicating at any time. ( we speak very little Spanish ). A cook was arranged for us, we found the food to be delicious. The property is about 15 minutes North of Jaco and is a short drive to markets, surfing beaches and shops. The property is lush and tropical with a crystal clear pool that we found was very well kept. With parrots chirping, tropical plants, and a green, well manicured lawn. Fresh fruits ( Star fruit, Mangos, Coconuts & Limes ) are abundant on the property and serve as a delicious addition to any meal. It is quite an experience staying on the beach, swimming and kayaking to the next beach, then to walk up to the estate and see the gorgeous sunsets and scenery right from the front porch is spectacular while enjoying a cocktail. Keep in mind that this in not the Marriott. This is an authentic taste of real Costa Rica; beautiful and secluded. There were 15 of us and we all had plenty of space and beds. You also will have very good communication with the staff. After check in we were provided with a set of 2 way radios in case we need any thing to just call. The staff of the villa in my mind, made our trip much more enjoyable. For the price, Macaw Beach is a bargain for the quality of service and comfort. It is true paradise. We will definitely be visiting Macaw Beach again in the future and would recommend it to any one who would like a real taste of the true Costa Rica ! PURA VIDA !!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This property is located near Jaco, and is easily accessible from San Jose (about 2 hrs). We opted not to rent a car, but to use rented buses with bi-lingual drivers. This was a trip where 7 guys got together to celebrate two 50th birthdays! None of us had been to Costa Rica before. Sal, part owner and contact, answered multiple questions via email before we arrived, and arranged for transportation from the airport. During out entire stay he took care of us from arranging for a cook, arranging transportation, reservations for attractions, and even went out of his way to take us into town to pick up groceries and do a little shopping. Never having been there before, and in another country, I was skeptical of some of his recommendations at first, but it soon became apparent he was right on with everything he suggested. Sal was great! This property was slightly more rustic than we expected, but it was perfect for seven guys who wanted to relax by the pool, have someone else cook and clean for us, and take some adventure tours. If you are looking for a beach to relax on, this may not be your property, as the beach is coarse dark sand with a lot of rocks. There's a great beach just minutes away though, and they have a great pool. The property is somewhat isolated, although there are restaurants right across the highway and down the beach. Sal will tell you which ones are good if you ask. All seven of us had our own air conditioned room in one of three buildings on the property. They have room for a lot more people, and it would be great for a larger group. The grounds are loaded with tropical fruit trees, tropical plants (most of which have beatiful flowers), stunning birds such as the scarlet macaws and of course, iguanas. I would highly recommend using the cook, unless you feel like you want to cook, or have special dietary needs. We wanted typical Costa Rican food, and we got it. None of us ever got sick either, and we drank the water. Things we didn't expect: -Things were not necessarily cheaper in Costa Rica than the US (i.e., the local beer was ~$5.50/6 pack at the grocery store) -So many iguanas and birds; very cool -The sun came up at 4:45AM and went down very quickly at around 5:30PM -Costa Ricans eat rice and some form of beans for just about every meal -We could drink the water All in all a wonderful property and a wonderful trip. We can't wait to go back.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

We were looking for a place to stay that accomodated a large family, with children of varying ages. This property was perfect! The babies were able to sleep, while the older kids and "grown-ups" played in the pool. The outdoor covered porch was a gathering place for cards, games, and talking by the pool. It was close to Jaco, where we went surfing, crocodile watching and zip-lining. The House Manager was awesome. He helped us with arranging day-trips, and took care of our every need at the house. He even made a few trips to the store for us. He was able to give us great local advice on restaurants, activites, and educated us on local culture. The houses are beautiful, and the pool is immaculate. There is a grocery store that is very driveable, and I ended up going almost everyday. The Facility Manager cut fresh coconuts for us to eat, and wild Star Fruit grow beautifully on trees on the property. We had a great trip to Costa Rica. Staying in a local house made the trip much more enriching. We had big lizards (no snakes, thankfully), tons of birds, and a vast array of marine life right at our house. We had the opportunity to learn about local culture, and to eat in more "traditional" restaurants without risking illness. We got great advice about experiences that our family would enjoy. I would highly recommend staying at this house, and would eagerly visit again myself!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This place was perfect for our group of 10. Tucked back off a main road it offers the perfect amount of privacy along with relaxing water views. Our host/owner was always there asking how is we needed anything. Upon our arrival he had already stocked the homes with the refreshments that we had asked him for in advance. Also, he is very knowledgable about the entire area and can set you up with whatever it is you are looking to do. The property was well maintained and everything looked great. I would definitely recommend this to vacationers of all ages. I'm already looking at dates to return to this beautiful beach front estate.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Want to see the real Costa Rica, stay in a beachfront neighborhood and meet wonderful Costa Ricans? This is the place! Located north of Jaco, a couple of miles from Carara Nat'l Park, we spent Christmas 2008 at this property and loved every minute of it. You can walk out from any of the 3 houses on the property right onto the beach. It's a typical CR beach--flat brown sand w/palm trees and rock formations here and there--great for walking, swimming or kayaking. There is a good restaurant a 15 minute walk up the beach. Local grocery, vegetable market and fish markets nearby, as well as ATM. The middle house has a small but delightful walk-in aviary with friendly parrots to feed and talk to. There are starfruit, almonds, oranges, cashews, coconuts and lots of other interesting flowers and plants growing on the property. The pool is lovely and perfectly maintained, with a comfy hammock that our 3 teenagers loved. The scarlet macaws came every day to the property (sometimes 5 at a time). There were many other birds, iguanas, little lizards, wild parrots and squirrels on the property, but no irritating bugs/mosquitos and no snakes. We dined outdoors every day on authentic Costa Rican food--delicious seasoned rice and beans, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables and a little meat--very healthy. We like to eat what the locals eat, but the cooks will make anything you like. We could have stayed at the property the entire time, but chose to do several outings (all fun and interesting): Manuel Antonio Nat'l Park, jungle canopy ziplining, horseback adventure to a waterfall, watched sunset from a mountaintop amphitheatre, afternoon at Punta Leona, crocodile river cruise, shopping for coffee, Lizano sauces and local batik prints. The staff at this property is unparalleled. Sal, the manager/concierge, will arrange everything for you--his advice was excellent in every instance. The cooking and housekeeping staff were very easy to work with. The staff were always available but also respectful of our privacy. By the end of the trip we felt like we were staying with good friends. We felt safe everywhere we went, day or night, even at night in Jaco. The houses lock up tight and a friendly security guard stays on-site all night. Tips: -hire a driver--costs about the same as renting a car, and you get a free translator and tour guide (Sal will arrange) -houses are nice but not fancy--think lodge w/pool, AC & cable TV -take Sal's advice -Pura Vida!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

He was able to arrange a private car at our disposal, food, cleaning service and full concierge. The estate is a beautiful waterfront property. All three homes are very well maintained. There is no doubt that this resort is the very best when it comes down to it. I've been there twice. My most recent trip was July 2008 and I am already planning my third trip! Out of all the places to go and stay. I highly and whole heartedly recommend this place located in paradise. The service is excellent & the place is incredibly well maintained in perfect condition. I had no idea what to do there but thanks to the highly knowledgeable staff I’ve had the experience of a lifetime. On the property everyday I would see Macaws all over the almond trees as well as other parrots also I observed hummingbirds daily at the feeders. Throughout the entire property there are beautiful flowers that attract a variety of butterflies. The food at the nearby restaurant was delicious. The beach was very calm and clean. All around I felt safer than I've ever felt the area there is very pristine. A short hike from the property I saw monkeys and other wildlife. The kayaks provided were very exciting and easy to use. The facilities made me feel right at home and very comfortable. I enjoyed the different adventures to go on nearby, from riding ATV's, exploring the Rainforest, Zip lining thru the canopy(we saw Toucans), & to the thrilling river tour. The trips have been full of terrific memories. There is no doubt that anyone that goes will have a spectacular time. At the beach there is a beautiful waterfall, the staff opened fresh coconuts for us.There was a lot of privacy at times we were the only ones at the beach which was great because it was not like here in Miami where the beaches are always crowded. It's a great to be there the local shops had much to offer from food, gifts, to night life. I really enjoyed the houses on the property they were very well furnished, the artwork is fascinating, and the pool was always maintained crystal clear. There is so much to see and do.One of the perks of staying right on the beach was the early morning walks down the beach and the beautiful sunsets. Its really remarkable how well spent the time there is I consider it to be priceless it cannot be compared to anything else after this I will never stay in a hotel again. This place is Honestly the very best experience one can imagine. This last trip was a large group of my family and friends. In total there were 22 of us & none of us had any regrets except I guess leaving. All of our experiences there have been remarkable. Thank you for your excellent hospitality and services. We'll be back!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

At the end of March into April a group of 13 close friends(including children) traveled to Costa Rica for the second year in a row to stay at our favorite coastal getaway. This is almost like a resort unto yourself. Great privacy and all the amenities you could imagine. Just a top notch vacation spot for those looking for a slice of heaven on earth. We traveled and stayed in this lavish compound on the beach. There was 13 in our party and boy did we have a good time. From the beautiful in-ground pool to the many bbq pits to cook during the day or in the evening for dinner, this place has it all. Located directly on the beach where you can relax, go fishing, or swim, this location had it all. The houses were immaculately cleaned and welll maintained. Our onsight guide, Sal, was a godsend. He was close by at all times to cater to our every need not to mention keeping the property maintained endlessly. I was impressed by the extent to which he and his staff worked to make this place pristine. It is everything you could want in a vacation spot. The pool is just awesome wherein you can sit by it and see the beach and the ocean! The rooms were spacy and the beds comfortable. The general seating areas were spacious with comfortable furniture and televisions that gave you a nice cool place to relax when not out in the gorgeous sun and sand. The kitchens were amazing and large. As far as the restaurants, there is one within walking distance of the property that serves great breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A short drive will take you to many other restaurants, places to hike, other beaches, and places to shop. This is located in the perfect place to feel secluded, but have everything you need right around the corner. There are fishing charter closeby that was a great day for us...4 sailfish, 2 ahi-ahi in one day!!! I would absolutely 100% recommend this propery to friends, groups of friends, and any family looking for a slice of heaven on earth. You will not be disappointed, i promise! A 1st class stay all around. I hope you enjoy it as much as all of us did!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Just looking at our pictures of Macaw Beach and wishing I was still there. We finally made it home with more delays and an extra night in Miami. It's been so hard adjusting to "real" life again. I hope you are all (you, Rosaria, Victor, Cha-cha, and Fefa) are doing well. I can't tell you how many people we have all bragged to about your paradise in Costa Rica. I don' t think in our wildest dreams we could have come up with a better place to stay or better people to spend time with. If there is anything you need from the states don't hesitate to let us know. The guys have loved giving out the website with their sail fish pictures on it. Macaw Beach blows away any hotel on the beach in Jaco. The home is gorgeous with lush surrounding gardens. Contains all the amenities you would find at a hotel PLUS an amazing crystal clean pool right off the oversized covered porch/patio. This is truly a tropical paradise right on the beach. Gentle lapping waves (Not rough, No undertow like Jaco) with soft brown sand greet you just steps away from the house. Most mornings, a large flock of colorful Scarlet Macaws land in the trees right on the property! This place is not to be missed. ...And I haven't even begun to mention the nightlife & great restaurants in Jaco (A short drive away). Check out Pacific Bistro for the best Tuna steak prepared Sushi style. Excellent Mexican food at Jaco Taco, Lunch at Bubbas for fried Mahi Mahi Fish Tacos...too much to include in a short review. Costa Rica PURA VIDA!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

The beach in front of the house was so calm and warm it was like taking a bath. I stayed here before the pool was installed so I can't comment on that but it looks good... The house was kept spotless every day by the housekeeper and it was close to everything we wanted to do. My only tip is to rent a car and drive to Jaco at night for the restaurants!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with young children, sightseeing.

Whenever I go to Costa Rica, my favorite place to stay is the house of macaws. It makes an excellent base to enjoy all that the area has to offer. The grounds are more of a garden than your typical yard and the rooms are equipped with all the up to date anemities that I am accustomed to in my home in California. The staff is very attentive and concious of my every need, but not pushy. If you want privacy they know when to leave you to yourself but are always there to help answer any questions or direct you to the best deals on any activity you may be interested in. There is a live in concierge who is very helpful and they maintain their own bird aviary where they take in injured birds and care for them until they are ready to be released. The beach is on a beautiful tranquil bay and along with the grounds is very private. There is twenty-four hour security so there is never a worry about theft or vandalism. I highly recommend the house of macaws whether you have a family or just want to get away on your ownRecommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Hello! My family and I just spent six weeks at the Macaw House and want to let you know what a wonderful experience it was. Everything was beautiful and we had a great time! Your staff helped make the trip so nice. The staff supervisorl was extremely helpful in anything we needed -- he arranged drivers for us, told us places to go. I want to express my gratitude to him, and the rest of the staff. They are all very nice people and made it so enjoyable for us! Rosaura even brought me a bouquet of flowers on my birthday! Thank you for the use of the home. I'm sure we'll be back! Lisa ADid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/3
