Location: Daglan, Aquitaine, France, Europe (Just 1 Hour from the International Airport of Bergerac)
Accommodations: Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 4-5)
Keywords: Cottage
Situated with the most wonderful far reaching views across the valley towards the Chateau Du Peyruzel, The Byre is a newly renovated cottage that sleeps 4 people in great comfort. There is the addition of a sofa bed for those extra guests if necessary.
Part of La Prairie Estate, The Byre is just a few minutes drive from the wonderful village of Daglan that has the added luxury of being host to one of the loveliest restaurants in the area. Eating wonderful food prepared by Sylvain at Le Petit Paris is one of those moments in life that fades reluctantly in order to become an everlasting memory....
This gorgeous cottage is set at the heart of the Estate and the views are breathtaking over the village towards Le Chateau Du Peyruzel, its 13th Century Castle, and down the valley towards Le Chateau de Castelnaud, a must for every budding Knight and Damsel.
Along the valley floor after you have left Daglan you will come into the ridiculously beautiful villages of Beynac and La Roque Gageac, both of which are straight out of Medieval times. In fact, dawn or early evening in either of these villages, leaves you pinching yourself to make sure you are really in the 21st century...
The Byre has been lovingly knocked about and altered this last winter and is proud to offer luxury accommodation for 4 people in 2 bedrooms, one of which is our new double bedroom with its 180cm new bed with matching bed linen, curtains, lampshades etc...
On this first floor is also the newly painted bathroom and the sweet bunk bedroom.
We have also redesigned the living room, creating a new opening and popping into place a new couche and armchair and a new soft rug. The walls, floors and doors have all been redone and the kitchen updated and new crockery, saucepans etc., make this a fabulous working kitchen that leads out onto the terrace with eating facilities and the BBQ!
La Prairie Estate provides you with all you need for your holiday and there is a fully equipped laundry room, a play barn with every toy imaginable, books, etc... Up on the top field beyond the garden is the children's play area where we have put the football goal, two log cabins, swings, slides, sandpit and table tennis table. A few meters walk away from the house, beyond your covered garage is the spectacular swimming pool with the pool house. This provides much needed shade during the hot months. There are plenty of sun loungers with cushions too.
There is so much to do in the surrounding area that unless you are by the pool everyday you will be very busy visiting the many gorgeous villages, Eagles rock in the extraordinary village of Rocamadour, the underground boat ride at Padirac or swinging from trees high above the ground in one of the many Air Parcs in the area...
Or, needing some quiet time, you could visit Le Chateau De Beynac, eat out under the trees at L'Esplanade that overlooks the river Dordogne, go up in a Hot Air Balloon or visit the Nocturnal Market in Domme....

Owner Description

Hello Everyone!
Well, after browsing the photographs in my online album I decided that the best advertisment would be a photograph of our wonderful children who have made La Prairie what it is today. Inspired by them from the beginning, they have all lived here, The Farmhouse being especially important, as it is here that Huckleberry came at 2 days old and where at the age of 5 years, 8 months and 2 days, Nadia arrived from Burundi in Africa to be a part of our weird and wonderful family forever.
As for us, I and David, well, what to say that you would want to know?! You can't go and blow your own trumpet can you? But I can blow David's and let you all know that he is the Master Craftsman who has done it all. We came to France back in 1986 in order to work and to stay somewhere just after our marriage in the April of that year. We quite simply never went back to England. We both spoke French as I had been educated here for 4 years whilst living in Normandy with my parents and David had spent many winters in the Alps. We lived and worked all over France before falling for La Prairie in 1996. We have spent the last 15 years accomplishing what we have now and are still at it! We love what we do, love La Prairie very much and can't wait for 2012 to start although we don't finish this year until the end of October. The winter months will be very welcome in order to work in the houses making them lovelier, replacing what needs to be replaced, adding new and up to date essentials and mainly to re-do the laundry room and the entire re-surfacing of the pool terrace with stone cobbles which we are greatly looking forward to. We hope that you will come and stay with us very soon.
Why the Owner Chose Daglan
Why did we choose the Golden Triangle of the Dordogne? Well, because of its proximity to 1001 castles, the nearness of Daglan, La Belle Etoile in La Roque Gageac, the history, the river itself, the people, the climate, everything in short. We came across La Prairie quite by accident though. It was in 1995 when we were living about an hour away in the Lot. We came over this way because we had heard tell of its incomparable beauty. We did as we had always done and drove around the country lanes, avoiding the busy parts of the area. This led us to Le Peyruzel. Destiny? Undoubtedly. Easy? No, not at all. We loved it here although there was nothing but some ruined buildings and weeds and brambles 7ft tall. We offered a price. Accepted with joy on both parts then turned down as 'family' wanted to buy it. Fortunately for us 'family' decided against it at the very last minute and we jumped in as quick as possible and signed over the money before it could happen again. We had seen the extraordinary potential, the position of the property was unique. All was needed was hard work and we had plenty of that to give!
The Unique Benefits of this Cottage
Perhaps the best thing about living here at La Prairie is the peace and quiet. You could be a million miles from problems that beset the rest of the world yet we are so close to noise, ferment, news and people if we choose. I find that a rare combination.
Also, there is the village of Daglan which is so beautifully maintained and so French and so welcoming.
Walking the dogs is a treat not a chore as is the gardening. Spring comes very early here too. By the end of February there are many signs that the warmer weather is returning: the Black Redstarts are nesting early, the swallows appear at last, the dandelions come out and the light changes. You can rise at 5.30 in May and be greeted by deer and rabbits and maybe, if you're lucky' a shy wild boar. The air is warm already, the promise of another day of unbroken sunshine. And then there's lovely Sarlat of course, a fabulous town, so rich in culture and history that even after 30 years of living in France, I still find this town fascinating and love nothing better than having tea in one of the cafes along the side streets.

Movie Stage for Perfect French Cottage

It’s so charming it could be a movie set, but I’m glad it isn’t so I can enjoy it. Interior decorators use the phrase “light and airy” to describe so many places, but they haven’t a clue about the real “light” and “air” in the French countryside at La Prairie. The Byre has wide glass doors spilling sunshine into a kitchen with a farmhouse table taking center stage for extended meals and conversation and a great working space to prepare meals. The gingham, red-checked curtains frame a view of climbing roses, the hillside with wildflowers and valley beyond. I have a picture of this window at my desk at work. and it brings so many good memories of warm baguettes, creamy butter, sweet strawberries and more mouth-watering food shared in the kitchen. A step down into the living room is a comfy sofa, colorful artwork, wood-burning stove and the television with plenty of movies for entertainment. Upstairs, after climbing past decorating touches that make me feel right at home, a French home that is, I discover a king-size bed to rest my tired body after walking many steps in French castles. Large windows on each side of the bedroom have dreamy views and bring the sunlight or moonlight to this special room with perfect decoration. We bunked our suitcases in the other bedroom since we had no little ones with us, but it would add lots of happiness with youngsters in the bunk beds. Did I mention the pool? It’s a few steps away or you can be lazy like we were and just recline on the loungers with a nice cool drink listening to the birds.
Recommended for:Romantic getaway, sightseeing, families with young children.

The pictures we had seen of La Prairie were appealing, and what we had read and heard about La Dordogne was certainly enticing, but nothing really prepared us for how enchanting, delightful, and peaceful both the area and the farm would be. Our week at La Prairie was from the 22nd to the 29th of May 2010. We stayed at The Byre, and it was perfect for the two of us - - a fully equipped kitchen, a pleasant and attractive sitting room, and a master bedroom with a very comfortable bed. An unexpected bonus (though mentioned, I later discovered) were the upstairs bedroom windows which provided lovely views of the surrounding countryside. We particularly liked looking out toward Le Peyruzel and the hillside towns beyond in the evening. We also enjoyed sitting outside on the patio sipping Bergerac wine and tasting a variety of good French cheese. The surrounding countryside, of course, is wonderful, both calming and spectacular, depending on where you happen to be at any given time. The cliffside towns by the Dordogne River, such as Beynac-et-Cazenac and La Rogue-Gageac, are amazing and unforgettable, but the little country villages away from the river, such as Daglan, have an appeal of their own as well. I became curious about all the walnut groves, but I formed a special attachment to the local Limousin cattle. They are such a pretty color! Louise and David were helpful, friendly, and interesting hosts. We enjoyed as well meeting many of the children. We also would strongly endorse Louise's recommendation of Le Petit Paris restaurant in nearby Daglan. All in all, our stay at La Prairie was both exceptional and tranquil.
Recommended for:Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, age 55+, sightseeing, people with disabilities, families with young children.
