Hi Everyone ~ Tried to put this in the guestbook but couldn't so..
My name is Nancy and my husband and I just recently purchased this wonderful house on the pond which we call the Dollar House. There is a unique story about it that I would like to share with you.
The house was built in the 1970's for the Kerry family on a piece of property directly on Cape Cod Bay in Eastham. They had done some renovating here and there to keep the house updated but after awhile the Kerry family wanted to demolish the house to make room for a grand house on the water.
Along came Connie who was a long time friend of the Kerry's. She wanted to buy that building. In 2003 the Kerry family told her she could have it for $1.00 BUT she had to move the house off the property. Connie jumped at the chance as she owned much property in Eastham and could find a place for it.
The house was cut into 3 pieces and transported to the spot where it sits now on a brand new foundation just 100 feet from Moll's Pond. The cost of the move I was told was $35,000 (so much for the $1.00). Connie's husband John who is in construction and has been a friend of mine for more than 10 years, worked on the house doing a little of this and a little of that in his spare time. Sadly Connie passed away in 2004 and so John stopped working on the house ~He will tell you it was her baby~
As I said Connie and John owned more property and a friend of mine moved into one of the houses up behind the pond near the road. When I went to visit her I looked out her window and admired the house down on the pond. Really wished I had it and I didn't know it belonged to John until then. That was 4 years ago.
Well times are really tough for everyone. One day this past summer I recognized the house in one of the real estate books and immediately asked John if it was his house on the pond. We struck a deal! My husband and I took all our funds out of our IRAs to purchase it and had the closing the end of October.
(Funny thing is that my husband, who is a mason contractor, remembered that he worked on the foundation of the house when it was on the original site)
Now there was work to be done. We've put in all new floors, sheetrock, insulation, heating, water, wiring, plumbing, doors, new shingles and trim, replaced windows, new kitchen, new bath, fixtures, etc. The large deck, foundation, and roof are original (from after the move). All interior furnishings and appliances are new.
Yeah ~ We call it the dollar house!!!! Maybe some day I'll figure out how many dollars it really took and change the name.
The Kerry family, John, and others who were involved with the house come to see the progress and are very pleased with the life we have returned to a house that provided so many people with fond memories of times gone by.
We hope that the $House provides you, your family, and friends with fond memories of a wonderful vacation.

The house was connected by a breezeway with another similar home in wooded setting away from the roadway. The setting was quiet and the neighbors were rarely seen. Our kids(and I) had a wonderful time fishing and exploring the pond every day. We were disappointed that was a restriction due to the presence of blue-green algae with swimming discouraged though we did wading and jump in the last day (we were there during a very dry period and may have effected the water quality). The house was conveniently located a bit over a mile from the National Park Visitor Center at Salt Pond and was close to the Cape Cod Bike Trail (convenient for jogging with nice views) as well was close to many of the attractions. The house was clean but given the location by the pond and sand in the area, we were constantly sweeping up the sand off the floors despite washing off in the outside shower. It was a bit difficult negiotating the narrow spiral stairs to the downstairs master bedroom from the main floor. The view of the pond was beautful from the living room and deck. The house did not have air conditioning; I guess normally its not needed but we had a couple of hot and humid days in the end of July. The house in general is at a great location and would reccommend it for a family of 3-5 people for a Cape Cod vacation.

My husband and I recently stayed at this beautiful and homey rental on Cape Cod. We found it so easily with directions given,it was super clean,it had all the ammenitiesand just a gteat place to just relax......The pond was so relaxing to just sit by it until my daughter, her husband and my four grandchildren came for the day..They had so much fun..The owners were right there if I had a question or a problem. They even came by and met my family. They are great people...The bike trail was right there, restaurants, yard sales, art gallerys everything you could think of. I recomend this place to anyone who just wants to get away from it allllll...It was a home away from home but no stress at all....I'm already planning next year................

We stayed in the $house for a few weeks this year to try to get some art work done and basically rest after a long busy period. We wanted to have a Cape Cod stay and had looked at several places, deciding this house had the best outlook and interior convenience for our purposes. We found the place so delightful that we have already made arrangements to come again next year around the same time. The views are inspirational and the whole ambiance of the surroundings have been a great resource for our art work. The owners were particularly considerate and helpful, taking time to check we were managing to find everything and suggesting different places and activities in the local district to help with our creative work. I cannot recommend the house more highly to anyone looking for a great escape from the rat race with everything on hand to have an enjoyable and comfortable stay. As the owner says above, the house is spacious, airy and very amenable. Everything one would need to have a safe, comfortable and restful holiday has been taken care of - and might I say, very tastefully. As an artist I tend to focus on interior spatial arrangement and wall decoration. The owner obviously has a good eye for tasteful design because all the spaces have been arranged with close attention to creating an accessible, homely atmosphere. I can't say that we've had a single negative experience. Who would think that having to be inside in bad weather could be so good? We felt so at home here that it has been very hard to leave. I cannot recommend this charming little house more highly - it has been sheer magic for us, in every way.

Returning Cape Visitor!
Returning Cape Visitor!
I just came back to this site to set up my rental for this coming July and noticed there has been some negative feedback on this lovely vacation home. I feel somewhat inclined to leave a note about my experience there since it seems to have been quite different from this other visitors experience. My family and I have spent two consecutive summers staying for a week in June at the "Dollar House." We absolutely love it there! A coworker of mine recommended this place after staying at Nancy and Chet's other rental property in Wellfleet a few years ago and said their vacation was nothing short of spectacular. We loved the thoughtful touches added everywhere around the home, such as a bottle of wine on ice and nice music upon arrival. They were so thoughtful to think of all the details to make our vacation exceptionally comfortable. The house was spotless each time we were there, which is extremely important to my family because my son has severe mold and dust allergies and it can be very difficult for us to find a place suitable for him to stay. Nancy and her husband, Chet, were absolutely gracious when we called them on our second day staying there last year. We were having problems firing up the grill for an afternoon bar-b-q we had planned, so we called them to help us out. Chet came right over with a new propane tank and fixed whatever the problem was. Like I said before, my family and I absolutely love this place! I would proudly recommend it to anyone that is looking for a cozy, clean, and kid-friendly summer rental for their family. And on a side-note, I will say that yes, the dock was a bit squishy this past year as compared to the previous year, but my kids were jumping up and down on it like a trampoline with no problems. Can't wait to start our 2011 summer vacation at Nancy and Chet's "Dollar House" again! -The Barron Family

The place was beautiful, however there were several things that were very upseting to me. To begin with we had a BIG problem with ants. Everything we put on the counter was covered with the tiny little creatures with in minutes,so when we were preparing our meals we had to be very careful. The dock that is pictured is a little nicer then the one at the house, you couldn't even walk out on it for fear that you would crash right through it! I was told that I would recieve my deposit after 45 days. It has been 2 months and still have not recieved it,I have emailed and yet to get a response. All in all these were not the most upsetting to me. The biggest problem I had with this rental was that we had some relatives over for dinner after the beach one day. While preping for dinner and I recieved a message from the owner of the property,it was very rude, accusing and abrupt! She accused me of having 10 ppl when we only had 8 and told me that if I didn't bring it back down to the lease amount of 6 that she would have to have me removed!! I was appalled! I was under the impression that when the lease said that no more then 6ppl can occupy the house it meant for sleeping not for dinner. The owner lives right next door which was no problem because it was a family vacation.I did not try to hide the fact that we had family over for dinner. When I got the message I returned the phone call right away she was not to nice and was very stern with me. I assured her that there were only 8ppl at the house and invited her to walk over and see for herself, however she refused. I was told that my guest could stay for dinner and that they were not welcome after that evening. So long story shot we would NEVER rent this place again and I would advise that you check to make sure that you are allowed to have guest over for a movie or dinner before you rent!!!!!

Owner response: 2011 ~ Living and owning rentals in a sandy environment is a wonderful experience but it has it's challenges. One challenge is insects. To meet this challenge we have and will continue to have contracts with a well-known professional exterminating company for all of our properties, including our own home in Wellfleet (6 miles away), since the day each home was purchased. These contract provide quarterly and on demand service. At any time they are just a phone call away. New this year is a pressure treated dock. The previous non-pressure treated dock was replaced as the water level in the pond last spring was at the highest level recorded and the dock spent the spring completely submerged. We really strive to make the home as beautiful, comfortable, and as functional as possible for ALL our guests so we ask that people adhere to the lease guidelines which, among other things, limits the number of people occupying the premises to 6 and no pets. This ensures that the property and it's contents will be in excellent condition for our next guests. Regards, Nancy
