Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, South America (Marica, in the Costa Do Sol, is 1 Hour's Drive East of Rio)
Accommodations: Oceanfront House, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths (Sleeps 6-8)
Our beachfront home is located in the Marica area, the gateway to the Costa do Sol, in the Region of the Lakes. Marica is a safe, bustling small city of approximately 70,000 people, with about 125,000 people residing in the Marica region. A few miles from the centre of Marica, the beach stretches for 20 miles, and you will only see a few locals playing soccer in the sand, or walking along the beach, or out with their families enjoying a picnic on the beach on a Sunday afternoon, or perhaps fishing from the beach. If you go to Cordeirinho (only a mile from the house), you will find the local children playing in tidal pools.
Only an hour's drive from Rio, Marica is centrally located to see many of the area's sights: to the west, Rio's famous Sugar Loaf Mountain, the Statue of Christ on Corcovado Mountain, Copacabana, Leblon and Ipanema beaches, the Rio Zoo, Rio Water Planet, Terra Encantada (amusement park), the shopping district of Barra de Tijuca, and of course the enchanting Jardim Botanico located in the centre of Rio. East of Marica, you will find Brazil's surfing capital, Saquarema, Cabo Frio with its lovely white powdery sand dunes, and Buzios.
Marica has much to enjoy as well, such as the view from the top of Ponta Negra with its lighthouse, swimming or fishing in the lagoons which are inter-connected by canals, waterfalls in Marica, buying local produce (especially pineapples and oranges) at the roadside, taking in soccer games, or simply enjoying the many restaurants serving delicious buffets at very reasonable prices. The locals are very friendly, and the few who speak English will probably give you their phone number and offer their help should you need anything! The house is a two minute walk to a bakery, and fresh buns are available every morning. It is between two beach kiosks serving beer, wine, and fresh fish, camaroes (shrimp), fries, rice, and salad. One of the kiosks has a children's playground as well. There are other outdoor restaurants and pizzerias within walking distance as well, serving delicious food. There is an internet LAN house within a ten minute walk. Several buses a day travel the main road between Marica and Ponta Negra - a two minute walk from the house. There is a main bus terminal in Marica where you can catch frequent buses into Rio.
The house itself is lovely and newly furnished. The living and dining areas have custom-made black granite tables and comfortable seating areas. The master bedroom faces the ocean, and you can drink your morning coffee while leaning against the padded headboard watching the waves come in, or in the evening you can enjoy sitting at the white marble table with a glass of wine with your loved one, watching the sunset. The middle bedroom, also with its own bathroom, has two single trundle beds and is decorated for children (but could easily be altered to have the beds pushed together for two adults, doing away with the children's pillows), and the third bedroom faces the barbecue area at the back of the house and has a double bed and a marble table.
The pool area is fenced for safety, and the whole property is walled and gated. There is an alarm installed on the doors and windows.
Our caretaker and trusted friend, Vinicius, will pick you up from the airport in our car (maximum 4 passengers) and bring you on tours of the area should you so desire. He speaks excellent English and has a wonderful sense of humor. $75 US/day will get you Vinicius, the car and anywhere you wish to go within the general Rio area.
Should you wish meals to be provided, Vinicius' mother is a wonderful cook and would be happy to prepare delicious Brazilian fare (to be organized with Vinicius upon reasonable advance notice).

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2007
We were looking for about a year online for somewhere in the world where we could take our children for a warm winter vacation; somewhere safe yet near an exciting city, somewhere reasonably priced yet without frequent issues to deal with such as hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanic activity, etc, and somewhere where the government is strong and democratic. We discovered the Marica area and fell in love online! Our plans when we went to Marica were to purchase a beachfront house, and there it was: exactly what we needed. A 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom house with a private pool, shady barbecue area, garden, on an amazing sandy beach, with an ocean view and sunsets that have not yet been compared in our experience. We consider ourselves extremely lucky to have found our friend, Vinicius, and his family. We would probably not be in a position to rent our Brazil house out without their help. One month/year in Brazil is not enough - we never want to leave!
