Pick out your own Christmas tree in Watauga or Ashe County, go shopping in Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk or West Jefferson, and snuggle by a fire when you're done. Deer Crossing is 15-20 minutes from ASU. Enter into the back roads of the High Country of North Carolina. Travel to the end of a dirt road onto a private drive to a location visited by Cherokee Indians long ago-over a hundred authentic arrowheads have been found, and is history to many Watauga County natives.
This mountain home offers peace and tranquility from the busy stress filled lives of its visitors. You enter into the house into an open area with living room centered by towering rock fireplace, dining room and a fully stocked kitchen (minus the food), with a sunroom accommodating a breakfast table, and master bedroom suite on the same level as well as a half bath at the foot of the staircase. Exit onto a covered deck from the living room or sunroom. Upstairs houses 2 bedrooms each with queen size beds which are connected by a Jack & Jill bathroom. Also on the upper level is a bonus room with 2 double beds but guests using that room must access one of the other bathrooms in the house. The lower level has a TV viewing area with pullout Sofa, double bed, full bath and small kitchen area, which exits onto a small patio.
The property also has multiple acres of common area surrounded by dirt roads, paths, pastures and the Blue Ridge Mountains, great for hiking or mountain biking. Travel about a mile to the New River on Ridge Road and go tubing or bike to Todd and listen to Blue Grass music or listen to a story at Todd General Store, Wahoos Canoes, and Green Valley Park with soccer fields, picnic facilities and playground. You may even find tubes with air pump to take with you. West Jefferson is about 25 minutes away and you can visit its Christmas Tree farms (home of 2008 White House Christmas Tree), cheese factory, art galleries, Glendale Springs (home of Ben Long’s frescoes), and Mount Jefferson Park. If you want to travel the other direction 15 minutes away, travel into downtown Boone and visit Mast Store, Appalachian State University (home of the little mountain football team that won 3 consecutive championships in a row and beat the University of Michigan football opener), Appalachian Summer Festival, Turchin Center, and Jones House to mention a few landmarks. From Boone, travel to Blowing Rock, Valle Crucis, Banner Elk and Linville. While there don’t forget to go shopping, dine at wonderful restaurants and take in a play or show with the Blowing Rock Stage Company at the Hayes Performing Arts Center(their website has a schedule of performances), visit Grandfather Mountain and if wintertime, put on a pair of skis or go snowboarding at Appalachian Ski Mtn. in Blowing Rock or Sugar or Beech Mtn. in Banner Elk.
If traveling in the winter, weather can limit accessibility without 4-wheel drive.
