Home of the University of Kansas, Lawrence is a 50 minute drive from the Kansas City airport (MCI). It is a vibrant community of about 80,000 situated along the banks of the Kansas River. The city features the University's lovely campus, many shops (both funky and upscale), a top-notch regional music scene, many small art galleries, biking trails, the state's only hydro-electric plant, two top-rated University Museums, and a variety of fine restaurants (including the Free-State Brewery, known for its brews). Forty miles to the east is Kansas City, nationally known for its Nelson Gallery of Art and its World War I Museum.
The penthouse apartment is located on a property established by one of Lawrence's original settlers. The historic and beautiful property has been occupied by one family for a century. The pool, originally the basement of the first farmhouse, is heated and open from May through September(weather permitting). The outdoor spa is available from September through May.
We enjoy sharing our special place with visitors to Lawrence and appreciate knowing what brings you here.

My family & I had a wonderful time during our recent stay in Lawrence, KS. We loved "The House the Hills Built" & marveled at the property in the middle of Lawrence, close to campus & the wonderful downtown Massachusetts Ave shopping, restaurants, etc. We felt as if we were at home & were truly comfortable. We made good use of the outdoor pool & met some very friendly extended family members. I would highly recommend a stay in this historical home.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car.

We stayed here for a month in Feb/March 2012 while I worked at KU. The location is perfect - an easy bus ride or walk onto campus or to downtown, stores just around the corner and wonderful views. We managed without a car for the majority of our stay. It was perfect for our two year old son too - he loved the huge yard, sand box, wendy house, play area, etc etc! Would definitely recommend it to a friend. It is a period property, and generally clean and well maintained. The owners were very helpful. The only disadvantage was that it was a third floor apartment, with an outdoor spiral staircase leading up to it, but there is an elevator too. Not for those with mobility problems though. We loved downtown Lawrence - lots of lovely stores and restaurants, and a really individual feel to it. People are so friendly!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, tourists without a car.

We stayed for almost two weeks with our adopted infant daughter while waiting for ICPC clearance to be allowed to leave the state. The owners were friendly, helpful and incredibly accommodating. The property was lovely and well maintained and had everything we could need. A great value. Thank you!Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with young children, tourists without a car.

My husband and I stayed here for a weekend. We came up to watch KU basketball and wanted to try something different. Two days before we were supposed to arrive, Lawrence got about 8 inches of snow. Our host was quick to inform us we may not be able to stay there because it would be almost impossible to get to the property. As soon as she knew it would be possible for us to stay, she informed us. The apartment was simply enchanting. If you love historical homes, this is the place to stay. Even though it was 10 degrees outside, the apartment was cozy and warm. Original steam radiators, hard-wood floors, the woodwork was beautiful. The view from the spiral stairs was spectacular. It was a home away from home! We would definitely stay there again. I would love to see it in the spring! Thank you so much for sharing your home with us!Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

My family and I stayed at this property twice for Ironman Kansas. The hosts are terrific - making reservations was easy and they were on-site for our arrival to make sure we were comfortable. The property is amazing - multiple acres of lawns and use of the pool. Be prepared to climb the spiral staircase! This penthouse apartment has all the amenities of home! You will be very comfortable!Recommended for: Families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

This property was wonderful! The owner was so easy to work with, excellent communication. The property has lovely grounds, and is so private. There was a playground set and swimming pool. This was excellent for our family, with young children. The kitchen had everything we needed, and there was a rocking chair in the main bedroom, perfect for traveling with our newborn. There is a spiral staircase to enter the apartment, so be prepared for some stairs. The housekeeper was also friendly and easy to work with. Thanks! We enjoyed our stay.Recommended for: Families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

Our family stayed here for 4 nights and were very comfortable in the apartment. The apartment matched the description in the website, and the property on which the house sits is an oasis within the city. We had a fabulous view and plenty of space (and use of a pool) for our son to get outside and move around. The owners were warm and welcoming. Everything we needed to cook and relax were available, and we were very close to downtown and the university. Visitors should be prepared to climb the spiral staircase up to the third floor, but this was not a problem for us.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
