great beach, home and property poorly managed

Guest: looking for a good place to return (long valley, nj)
Date of Stay: 07/23/11 Review Submitted: 08/14/11

i wished there were reviews prior to booking so here is mine planned our vacation late in season, house was only one available in july for "5" bedrms. it has 4bdrms(not 5),3bths. 2baths have small stand-up showers that need to be updated on 1st fl, upstairs bath has clawft tub. 5th bedrm is curtained off in the side porch but the bathroom vents to it just fyi. most of the windows don't work properly. some of the windows were framed w nails so if you try to close it, it slams down, and some of the storm windows do not close/open. we didn't appreciate being told on arrival that we had to clean it ourselves and it was obvious there wasn't a cleaning service prior to our arrival. on arrival we were also told trees had fallen on the roof in MARCH and repairs were being done...thought i was minor but should notify(ceiling installation w nails/big gaping hole in hallway) we were a party of 6 adults, 1 child, 2 toddlers. we called the owner with a few issues, walkway deck has a lot of loose screws and planks, one of the kids fell through it, water dripping down in the living room during a storm, yard and home were not well maintained (we racked the yard found screws n broken glass n our friend fixed the wooden deck walkway, there are 2 firepits (1 had garbage in it like roofing shingles) other had a pile of construction planks w nails piled on the ground for burning. (we tried to burn most of the nailed wood cus we didn't want our kids to fall/play with it) i was surprised & disappointed i was told it was kid friendly, but the home has a lot of nic nacs/antiques and lots of chairs we had to spend some time adjusting everything, grills falling apart. (we left property cleaner then received) pros: beach is great for toddlers.it's very shallow, property facing beach is big good for camping ... washer and dryer, nice hammock, nice neighbors, near erie canal so there's some boat traffic mostly on weekends, areas is great for bicycling, pizza king! 1st fl bdrm queen, side porch 1twin, 2nd fl: 1bd 2 twin, 2bd 2full, 3bd 1full *i would rent again 4 much lower rate knowing situation: it could be an ok rental w/just some attention to detail n reg cleaning service and lower price/rate p.s.rewrite: when i first wrote my review, i received an inappropriate email from the owner, which i thought was very childish. i responded w some suggestions n hope he'll make some improvements to better his business. i revised my review to include mostly facts . we had ants too just not as mu

Owner response:As the owner and resident of this property let me respond to these two reviews. First, let me say that I have been renting this location out since 2000 and have not received any negative reviews-till now! As far as the condition of this property is concerned let me remind you it is a CAMP! Yes the showers are old, the house is 100plus. They are not small and are clean and have great water pressure. The claw foot tub is very charming and most people with small children love it at bath time! NO ONE IS EVER ASKED TO CLEAN ON ARRIVAL,nor do they have to.THAT IS AN OUTRIGHT LIE! I take great pains to make sure that my house is spic and span and it was for this group. I explained that there were several repairs that the contractor did not have time to finish i.e. hole in the ceiling etc. and actually gave these renters a discount which they were happy to take. By the way, the water dripped in the living room because they apparently did not bother to close the upstairs lake front window. (which by the way is BRAND NEW) This renter arrived with tremendous attitude and was hyper-critical from the start and I told her that perhaps she should consider not renting a camp in the future-a hotel with maid service would be a better fit for them. There are numerous people that have rented with me and loved it (The family after this party loved it so much they want it for 2 weeks next year!) So, for any one who takes the time to read these reviews please be aware that an old, cozy and a bit rumpled lakeside camp is always going to have the kind of character that some people will not appreciate. But, we do ! (By the way a fire pit is just that-a pit. children should not be playing around it. And, we burn old wood and do not remove the nails-you do not have to either!)

Review of property #220688

Guest: duffy (Florida)
Date of Stay: 06/25/11 Review Submitted: 07/16/11

A week and two days before arrival at the camp, the owner notified me that two trees had fallen on the roof making two bedrooms upstairs unusable. He allowed us the use of the camp directly behind his at no extra charge. Since I planned to leave my home in the next two days, there really was no time to opt out and find another place on such short notice, so I accepted the offer. Upon arrival, I did not think I had the right place as shown on website. Place had not seen a coat of paint in recent history. The Lawn from house to lake was mostly weeds and had not been mown. I might add that homes on either side both had neatly mown, well-kept lawns. When we went to use the microwave oven, it was teeming with ants. There were ants coming out from around socket in the kitchen. We cleaned microwave and bought ant cups. The first night we went to use the other house, it was infested with spiders. We set off bug bombs, sprayed inside and outside of house, cleaned and wiped down ceilings, walls, washed curtains and windows, aired out cushions, and vacuumed thoroughly before using the house. When I used the oven, it smoked for 15 minutes before finally dissipating. Clearly it had not been cleaned or inspected before our arrival. On the plus side, the place was quaintly charming and ideally located in proximity to Sylvan Beach. If you aren't familiar with Oneida Lake, I would suggest you might want to do some research before renting since it is not, in my opinion, patuicularly noted for its scenic beauty. I was familiar with the area, so knew what to expect. Also, and nothing that anyone has any control over, but periodiocally beaches may be closed down due to illness-causing algae, so one might want to request information about water condition before engaging in swimming or other water sports.

Owner response:I did have a very destructive event happen at the house when the remnants of the tornado that was so deadly in the south in April hit my home head on! Two large old trees were sent crashing into the roof and nearly destroyed my home! When I informed the renter that there may not be enough time to complete the work she seemed very upset and so I offered the cottage next door that we do not usually rent out to make up for the loss of two bedrooms in the main house. She eagerly agreed. To say that the house has not seen a paintbrush in years is a complete fabrication! The house has been periodically painted but due to the harsh conditions at the lakefront there is always something that needs to be touched up. That is a very unfair statement and does not reflect the true condition of this camp. There were MINIMAL ants and spiders which, by the way is nearly impossible to eradicate at the beach front location that this house sits on. The reality is we share our wonderful house with "critters" that, unless you want to fill your house with poison every other day, you have to learn to deal with. This is a CAMP in a heavily wooded natural habitat area. If you do not like nature, this is not the place for you. The ovens have all been used and inspected. Perhaps this renter did not have great culinary skills and wants to blame my stove! And, she stated Oneida Lake not noted for its scenic beauty! Thats the statement I take the greatest offense to! The lake is GORGEOUS the sunsets spectacular! A 100 year old lighthouse sits 80 yards from the front door and the great ships that use the Erie Canal pass by every day. It looks and feels like the Cape or Martha's Vineyard! All in all, not a group that I would want to rent to again or that I feel should rent this type of location.
