Parisians say that Montmartre is "un vrai village", a genuine village, and it truly is. If you avoid the tourist scene at Sacre Coeur, you are living just like a Parisian of old with all the neighborhood merchants and the same neighbors that you see each day as you go about your errands on the cobblestoned streets. Everyone who has ever stayed in our place has been enchanted with the "quartier", a very vibrant place.
We are close to music and theater venues, and there is a thriving local nightlife for young people or the young at heart as well as great shopping for food, art, clothing, antiques, you name it. There is even an excellent French language school within walking distance.
Montmartre was outside the walls of old Paris and has a fascinating history. It was the home of many of the artists of the late 19th and early 20th century. Toulouse Lautrec, Matisse, Picasso, Van Gogh are just a few who lived and worked here. The area is still home to many artists and there are small galleries on every street.
The apartment is open and full of light with floor to ceiling windows in both rooms, a queen size bed, a full sized dresser and closet in the bedroom as well as a queen size convertible bed with an excellent mattress in the salle de sejour. There is a second small closet in the salle de sejour so that 4 people can stay comfortably.
We love to cook so the kitchen is completely functional, and we give you recommendations for local shopping and restaurants. In addition, we have a bilingual woman who will meet you and be available by telephone during your stay if a problem arises. She is like a concierge but does not live in the building.
We are in an 18th century building that was once a hotel where we are told Jacques Brel lived when he first came to Paris as a young man. Our apartment is on the 4th floor (5th US) on the back of the building, which is quieter. Yes, there is an elevator as well as two security doors at the entrance.
Both Metro Abbesses and Metro Anvers are close, and the bus stops at the corner, so you can be anywhere in Paris within 15-20 minutes. Gare du Nord, where you catch Eurostar or the RER to the airport, is a 15 minute walk.
This is our second home and very special to us, so we only share with special people who appreciate Paris as we do. We hope you will be one of them.
