Santa Catarina Palopo house description
Terraza Choi, 10 minutes by Tuk Tuk from Panajachel, is a lovely home perched 40 meters above the lakefront of Lake Atitlan. Spacious and open, fireplace in the living room, with a large front terrace and views of the lake and volcanoes.
Three bedrooms, one with a king size bed and two with queens, two baths (the upstairs bedrooms share a bath) with a cushioned private sun terrace with shade umbrella for the upstairs bedrooms and both bedrooms have fireplaces. The main floor bedroom has a private bath.
Main terrace with hammock, sound system and fridge for beverages. The terrace is well appointed and comfortable. Bar-b-cue on the main terrace as well as on the beachfront.
Manicured terraced gardens leading down from the house to the beachfront. Pathway lighting is provided for night-time access to the beachfront.
We have three Ocean Kayaks; two singles and one double together with lifejackets. There is no better way to get to know the lake than by kayaking to different villages, the hot springs and to view the lakefront homes.
The waterfront also has a sun deck with deck chairs together with umbrellas and a bar-b-cue.
Terraza Choi was operated for a number of year as a B&B but discontinued at the beginning of 2011 and returned to the status of a private home.
A Guestbook was maintained during that time and herefollow some of our guest coments taken directly from the Guestbook:
"Thank you for a wonderful time in Paradise! We really enjoyed our stay with you." Esther and Manuel - Switzerland..., 2006
"We can say that we discovered the paradise at your home." Willy and Josephine - Belgium..., 2007
"The day unfolds in pleasant anticipation of another loosely planned journey at Lago Atitlan. This could only be achieved because of the oasis "Terraza Choi." This vacation, which was like a dream, was one of our best adventures. " Kent, Kara, Alexi, Iam & Anya - Colorado..., 2007
"Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in this unique place! We were looking for a quiet, cozy place and found this GORGEOUS B&B that has surpassed all our expectations." Marisa and Alex - Buenos Aires..., 2008
"We have enjoyed our stay without words to express. Thank you both for making Guatemala and Atitlan even more magical that it already is." Keith and Melissa - Kansas..., 2009
"We thank you so much for the lovely time here. You are so friendly and hospitable with us. We will not forget it till the end of our life." Waltrand - Germany..., 2010.
"How can we qualify a period like we have lived here for 3 days? Heaven? Paradise? 5 Star Hotel? Or simply a real friendship daily and ... eveningly. This is really the best dreamed place we have seen in Guatemala. In brief, the only default we have met is that it has an end!
Marie and Didier - Belgium..., 2010 ..... and end of comments.

Perfect! Mystical memories, feasts for kings, safe, secure Lovely Atitlan Lakefront Home
I cannot fully explain how perfect and marvelous this home is for a vacation week in Guatemala. Nestled into a steep hilside, hidden among hundreds of trees and well developed flora and fauna, Terraza Choi welcomes you into complete calm and luxury... Artwork, fireplaces, incredible views, fluffy towels, swaying hammock, we felt like kings. Maria and Martina welcomed us and quickly introduced us to the Guatemalen culture of care and goodness. The feasts they prepared were wonderful, the grace they shared with us constant. This experience was something we could not have anticipated. It was something that will always be 'what we compare things to'. My children will forever say, "Remember that house in Atitalan? " The photos don't really show how incredible this home is! The strongest memory I have is of the 7 of us doing tai chi on the upper balcony in early evening hour as the sun's rays jumped off the volcano and seemed to transform into a huge wind hug - holding all of us as one. The kayaks were awesome! Along the lighted pathway that zig zags down to the waterfront oasis there is a shrine for St. Francis. It dawned on me, after returning to the states, that perhaps he is there to remind everyone to stop along the path at one of the several inviting resting places and take in all the peacefulness that surrounds. I can imagine the lake now as I think about those resting places! It is so beautiful, you don't really want to go siteseeing. But, if you do, in an instant you are in the national park, walking in the Botanical Gardens or strolling about the market places. In two hours you can be across the lake to climb San Pedro,or visiting Shella or in Antiqua! The owners made everything work for us. I think Jim has a license for making dreams come true. He worked with us on everything, thinking ahead about everything we might need. Jim arranged for Ishmael to meet us at the airport. He was pleasant and charming. He took very good care to make us feel safe and sound. He was completely kind and trustworthy - not to mention an awesome driver. Anselmo is the gardener and Champion the guard dog - there was never a moment when we didn't feel 100% safe in knowing they were taking care of things. We voted Anselmo the happiest man in Guatemala, he never stopped smiling! Our plan was to locate at Terraza Choi and from there experience Guatemala - it turned out the other way around - we visited Guatemala, but we experienced Terraz Choi. Thanks, thanks, thanks.

Owner response: We are happy that our guests enjoyed their rental of our home at Lake Atitlan. However, we wish to point out that Terraza Choi is strictly a rental home. We do not offer food and beverages nor provide a transportation service. Our renters contracted the services of the cook, Maria, and the driver, Ismael, privately and we were pleased to be helpful in that regard.
Terraza Choi = Pure R&R
Terraza Choi = Pure R&R
A beautiful and charming home with amazing views and breezes provided by Lake Atitlan, one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Terraza Choi is located down a winding bougainvillea lit driveway that's a quick 10 minute walk to catch a tuk-tuk or taxi off the main road. A well maintained home with housekeeper, Martina - (who is one of the kindest and talented ladies I have ever met), a full kitchen and amenities for if you desire do it yourself cooking. But... who would want to? A short ride by tuk tuk takes you to Panajachel /Pana where there's not a shortage of AMAZING eateries. We were told may not wise to walk into town after dark; One of necessary cautions to traveling anywhere in the world, but we had NO issues what so ever - Terraza Choi is a great place to relax, rest and unwind. Jim and Tania, the lucky owners of this piece of paradise are fabulous - and are super stars with making you feel welcome and acclimating you to the ins and outs of this gem of a place!

Owner response: Our guests from Richmond, Virginia, were exemplary in every sense. They are our new-found friends and we are very hopeful that they will choose to visit with us again in the future. Should they choose to do so, we will certainly welcome them with "open arms."
A Beautiful Piece of Earth!
A Beautiful Piece of Earth!
My friend and I stopped at Terraza Choi in December of 2011. Jim and Tania were so accommodating. We explored Lago Atitlan during the day and came home to wonderful dinners with excellent company. After a short tuk tuk ride from Pana, we arrived at the breathtaking Terraza Choi. The views are stunning, probably the best on the lake as you have views of all the volcanoes. The house is incredible. Every nook and cranny carefully designed and maintained. The view from the upstairs balcony is stunning. Grab a book and lay out to your heart's content. Martina keeps the place immaculate and also sells some incredible handmade local art and handicrafts at very reasonable prices. Be sure to take a dip in the lake and read a book in the palapa in the water. Terraza Choi is meant for relaxation. Though not too far from anything, it's secluded enough to ensure peace and serenity. I can't recommend it enough. I still keep in touch with Jim and Tania and I hope to visit again soon. If you are considering staying here, I highly recommend it!

Owner response: Corinne and her friend Shannon were our personal guests during their stay at Teraza Choi. We are very pleased they enjoyed their stay. However, it is important to mention that Terraza Choi no longer operates as a B&B. We do not offer meals but you may contract the services of a cook if you so wish.
We were invited to be the houseguests of Terraza Choi by the owner. Her idea is to promote the rental of her home in Europe and especially in Switzerland. Her belief is that Terraza Choi is suitable for the meticulous standards for which Europe is known and we were not disappointed. The house is exquisite and the detail of construction, layout and the level of maintenance is incomparable. We were very impressed. The house is warm and inviting and we felt at home the moment we arrived. There is a nice self-contained ambiance inside the house but when we walked out onto their enormous terrace and saw the view, it was breath-taking. The combination is stunning. We felt that we were on an island unto ourselves. The layout is practical and very conducive to living. High ceilings, cross ventilation, enormous Kommerling doors and windows that hermetically seal when closed - the temperature inside the house is comfortable day and night. Most of the waterfront homes in Atitlan have shorts roof lines which is the result of wanting a view of the lake from every point in the house. Sadly, this feature tends to leave the front wall exposed and they warm up in the afternoon sun which is intensified by reflecting off the lake. Terraza Choi's roof lines are high and long. They afford the view but also shelter the interior of the house from the heat of the sun. As a result, we were able to enjoy the warmth of the fireplace whenever we felt like it. We were also pleased to see that the owner is highly conscious of the need to avoid contaminating the lake. All septic is channeled to a biodigestor and grey water is dispersed into several very large "french drains" of the owner's design. The combination provides for no discharge of contamination into the lake or the underlying water table whatsoever. The gardens have a natural but manicured look to them and the walk down to the beachfront is punctuated by nooks and alcoves where cushioned seats have been strategically placed; each with a different view and all very comfortable for curling up to read a good book. We spent a great deal of time sunning ourselves both on the cushioned private sun terrace on the top floor but also down at the beach on the deck over the boathouse where a food preparation area an ample brick bar-b-cue are located. We believe that Terraza Choi is a very suitable option for the European market and it carries our highest endorsement and we are very pleased to write this review of Terraza Choi.

Year Purchased: 2000
About the owner: I am a Chemical Engineer by training, a teacher by profession and have resided in Guatemala for many years.
Why the Owner Chose Santa Catarina Palopo:
My husband built Terraza Choi in 2000 and, upon getting married in 2004, we moved here. We have made it a very nice home over these past years and I am especially interested in the "cordon bleu" school of food preparation - hence our well appointed kitchen.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Our home has quite a unique welcome to it. Inviting and comfortable, with a great deal of "curb appeal." We are told by guests that they feel comfortable and at home from the moment they walk in the door. "It simply has a good feeling to it." We are outside the hustle and bustle of Panajachel and Santa Catarina Palopo here on the waterfront between the two villages. There is a wonderful peace and tranquility that we enjoy here. The lake changes colour with the position of the sun and we look at the views of the volcanoes tirelessly.
