Location: Antigua, Guatemala, Central America (6 Walking Blocks from Central Park, 5 Minutes Walk to Market)
Accommodations: House, 4 Bedrooms + Sunroom, 3 Baths (Sleeps 7-8)
Our house is located in the colonial neighborhood of Espiritu Santo, six blocks from the central park of La Antigua and five minutes walk of the colorful bounty of the town’s produce and artisan market. It is a gracious, corner house on a tranquil cul-de-sac, with views of the surrounding volcanoes and the private retreat of flowering gardens and birdsongs. More photos are available at our house website. Please see link below.
Sunny, open, spacious, the four-bedroom, family-style house is a relaxed blend of Spanish and American styles, with modern conveniences, a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces, accommodating quiet study or work, with ample space for children, guests, and enjoyment of friends and colleagues. The house is a recent purchase for us and we have enjoyed some stunning renovations and adding photographs and local color. The house sleeps 6 people in conventional beds (with two additional pull-out beds).
First floor: A welcoming entrance hall opens into a large living room with glassed doors to outdoor veranda, formal dining room seating eight, and fully equipped modern kitchen, and bathroom with shower. From the kitchen, access to laundry and dryer, outdoor traditional “pila” or washing room, and outside kitchen garden. Gracious shaded veranda with relaxing chairs and hammock leads into the gardens with lion’s-head fountain.
Second floor: Off an upstairs landing are the master bedroom with king-sized bed and private bath (tub and shower), a second bedroom with twin beds, and a third bedroom with double bed; the latter share a bathroom with shower. A fourth bedroom/optional family room has a comfortable twin bed as well as extra pull-out twin mattress. An all-weather, glassed sunroom leads off the fourth bedroom and contains a pull out couch with comfortable mattress. Both the master bedroom and fourth bedroom/family room open onto the outdoor upstairs patio for morning coffee, sunning, and evening cocktails. All rooms are all spacious and sunny, with high ceilings and tiled floors.
Gardens/outdoor spaces: Within the walled compound are easy spaces for reading in the hammock, sculpting or painting in the garden, hanging laundry in the sun, a game of basketball or croquet, as well as ample space for 2 cars to enter and park through the automatic car park door. The house veranda leads directly onto a formal garden with fountain (lit at night) and a small kitchen garden near the back/kitchen door to the house. Through a lovely garden gate are a large car park (opens with electric door - room for 2 cars), basketball court, and a second garden, where we are nurturing fruit trees, more flowers and birds.
Other Conveniences: Wireless Internet, fully equipped kitchen, gas stove, washer and dryer, DVD player, house phone. The house has its own water cistern and filter. Part-time services of talented housekeeper for general cleaning and enthusiastic gardener are included. Our house manager is fastidious about welcoming and orienting guests and taking care of guests questions or needs as they arise. We couldn't be luckier to have such a great team.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2008
I have been dreaming about spending more time in Guatemala for 20 years, since first visiting in connection with a love of traditional textiles. I traveled here with my growing children and friends for vacations and summer adventures and volunteer engagements. In 2005, I joined the Board of Safe Passage/Camino Seguro, providing educational opportunities and life-skills support for children and families in the community of the Guatemala City garbage dump, and found myself coming to Guatemala 2-3 times a year. At the same time, I embarked on project to write a cultural guide to the Ixil Region of northern El Quiche Department. Deepening my interest and involvement in Guatemala all led up to my buying this lovely property in a quiet section of Antigua and putting down excited roots in this city and country. In my other life, I live in the Boston area and help service-oriented non-profit organizations with strategic planning and monitoring & evaluation.
The Unique Benefits of this House
This is a fabulously quiet area of town enables us to hear and enjoy the birds and not the buses. The neighbors know and care about each other and work together to keep the ambiance clean and safe. From here, there are easy backstreets to the Antigua market for fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers , and steaming neighborhood tortillas. It really feels like home and not just a vacation.
