This cute and spacious Cape Cod cottage sits on more than two wooded acres and has had a complete remodeling with added amenities! Enjoy the privacy and tranquility in the hot tub (no one under age 12 may use the hot tub) - open year round - on the large screened in porch, while gazing out over the field and woods where the white tail deer graze and play. Great for a romantic getaway or a family vacation! Additional common uses are for family gatherings, "girls getaway weekends" - we have even had honeymooners and bachelorette weekends!! Hear the whispering wails of train whistles, wafting through the woods from afar. Located on marked bike trails, this is a terrific location for bicyclists as well as for those who enjoy walking/hiking. The property is near Warren Woods State Park with its quiet hiking trail complete with a bridge that overlooks the rustic Galien River; also great for bird watching and ecological studies. Deer, wild turkey, fox, wood chuck and other animal friends are common sights. Explore Southwest Michigan's quaint lakeside towns; just five miles to New Buffalo with its harbor, beach and restaurants. The towns of Lakeside, Harbert, Sawyer, Bridgman, Buchanan and Berrien Springs are close by with their shabby chic shops, delightful diners, and wonderful wineries. The artsy town of Three Oaks is five-miles away with shops and live theater. Other well-known shopping/tourist towns are also close by: Holland (75 miles), Saugatuck (67 miles) and St. Joe/Benton Harbor (24 miles). There are township beach privileges on beautiful Lake Michigan less than 2 miles away. Boat launches and kayaking on the Galien River (that flows into Lake Michigan) are close too. For golfers, there are plenty of courses just a short "drive" away! "Four Winds" casino is only 5 miles away.
The floor plan is ideal for two separate/private quarters with common porch, decks and living/eating areas. Two large bedrooms and two modern baths are on the first floor each having access to the large screened in porch with its hot tub and each with a queen size bed. Also on the main floor, the living room features a queen-size sofabed. The upper level carpeted bedroom has a two single beds, a queen size air mattress with bedding available and/or floor space for sleeping bags. The master bath has an oversized steam/shower and large soaking tub. The family room features a gas starter wood-burning fireplace, available in the cold weather months only. Warm up in the morning on the enclosed sun porch with a cup of coffee and the newspaper.
All this gives the aura of an old-time Michigan cottage, yet with modern comforts. This cottage is intimate, cozy and private. There is a large grassed yard surrounded by huge everygreen trees with "bag-toss", bocce ball, croquet and horseshoes available.
This location is excellent for University of Notre Dame football weekends and the "Apple Cider Century" bicycle ride in the fall. THIS IS "PURE MICHIGAN" in Harbor Country!

Map & Owner's Profile

Why the Owner Chose Union Pier
Carol and Buzz Patterson are originally from Oakland County, Michigan near Detroit. After finishing his MBA at Michigan State, they moved to Chicago for career. Back and forth many times over the years on I-94, they began to explore the B&B's of "Harbor Country" focusing on Union Pier. Close to home in Chicago, yet on the way to visit relatives in SE Michigan as well as to visit a daughter at Michigan State in her college years. Union Pier is a terrific stopping off point from either direction and is also near Northern Indiana where Buzz attended and graduated from Culver.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage
Privacy, privacy, privacy! Beautiful forest, quiet and nature all around yet with easy and close access to I-94.
Owner's Map of Union Pier
Starting in 2005, architect Chris Brooks of Stevensville and his colleague Andrea Hutchins began helping us to dream about modifications/expansions to the property we had purchased. In 2006, general contractor Jack O'Toole ("Dreambuilders of Michigan", also of Stevensville) took over. Cute Cottage is the collective result of their combined talents and it was finished as you see it now in 2007. Great job by great professionals!

A beautiful way to experience the first snow of the season! We very much enjoyed the fireplace and the comfortable lodging. With one of your fine restaurant suggestions, we discovered the Heston Supper Club....a new treat!!

We had a terrific Thanksgiving weekend here - a welcome break from our Chicago lives of hectic busyness. We enjoyed several walks - to the beach and to Warren Woods - and with pleasurable couch time. The spa is fantastic, and the yard is just beautiful. Thank you for the hospitality and warmth!

Buzz& Carol - We had a wonderful weekend at Cute Cottage! Our family has come to think of Union Pier as our favorite vacation destination & your home made this trip extra special! Our kids loved having their own space to play with the LEGOs, and we had a family game of bag toss one night before roasting s'mores on the outdoor fireplace. Thank you for the amazing hospitality!

Buzz & Carol - Another wonderful week. You have a great location for a family reunion. Our daughter flew in from Boston and took the train over to New Buffalo. Our niece came from Chicago and Jef's sister drove over from Cleveland. This year we saw wild turkey twice and we enjoyed watching the lovely bluebirds. Thanks again! Jef and Dale (returning guests)

Thank you Buzz and Carol - We found just what we were looking for in Cute Cottage. We so appreciated your responsiveness before our arrival and, once here, your many thoughtful touches in this well-appointed cottage. Our boys felt right at home- they loved discovering some Legos upstairs and had a great time in the yard (butterfly catching also yielded two little toads - a treat!) and also at Cherry Beach. Such a functional kitchen and living area made things so easy on us - it's nice to actually relax a little while traveling with the little ones! Many thanks......

Thank you so much for letting us stay at the Cute Cottage. We had a grand time. Your shower is AWESOME! Our favorite part was most definitely the hot tub. We also enjoyed your stash of DVDs. We watched 5 movies! Cooking was great too as we made ribs, fajitas and pastas. Your yard is just beautiful with gorgeous flowers. We are looking forward to a return visit someday. We had a spectacular time at the Cure Cottage - aptly named - this past weekend. You are a class act....the lovely classical music playing upon our arrival was a very welcoming touch. The hot tub was terrific. Everything worked - your directions, everything in the cottage, the kitchen, the directions and descriptions of local restaurants, the beds were clean and the linens smelled freash. It was all great and we will be back!
