The Town - Discover one of the relatively undiscovered beach getaway towns on the Jersey Shore, 60 miles outside of New York City. Remember the Jim Carrey movie, The Truman Show, where he lives in the perfect classic Victorian town. Well that's Ocean Grove. It's charming, family friendly, with a real Main Street going down the middle of town full of ice cream shops, casual and fine dining, antique stores, book stores, art galleries and bakeries (and real estate offices in case you fall in love with the place). You will feel like you've stepped back in time. To add to that effect, Ocean Grove is a "dry town" where you can drink at home and BYO to restaurants but you won't find the party atmosphere of some Jersey Shore towns.

The Apartment - On the first floor of a four story Victorian house which is located one block from the beach. It includes exclusive use of the porch and front yard with views of the ocean. You will have access to a gas BBQ grill and a key to the local tennis court which is three blocks away (I believe there is a small fee if you want to make a court reservation but we just go and it has always been available).

We've furnished it to our taste which can generally be described as contemporary and zen. No chintz or flowery prints. Furnishings are mainly from Crate & Barrel and West Elm. The apartment has 2 bedrooms (both with queen-sized beds) and 1 full bathroom. The kitchen is very large and has a eat-in area as well as a washer and dryer. One of the two couches in the living room is a queen-sized sleeper sofa. The apartment has cable TV. If you need a crib, we have a portable one which you can use for no extra charge.

The apartment is not wheelchair accessible. There are three steps to get up to the front porch. For someone who doesn't want to climb many steps, it's an ideal unit.

Things to Do - In the area there are bicycle rentals, boating rentals, fishing at the pier (if you're a beginner - Learn To Fish! Tuesdays, from 7:00am to 10:00am in July and August. Poles and bait provided). In the summer the town puts on a monthly family movie night which takes place literally on the beach. There are weekly concerts, some for free and some for a charge. In town and the area are some terrific restaurants - our favorite is Bistro Ole in Asbury Park. Close by are several large Malls and a brand new Jersey Shore Premium Outlet Mall. Depending on where you're from, you may also want to do a day trip up to Manhattan. NJ Transit trains leave frequently from Asbury Park which is the next town over. Academy buses leave for New York City from in town on Main Street. You're an hour's drive from Atlantic City and close to the Monmouth Park Raceway. And of course there's the beach...

DON'T BE DECEIVED!

This is part of a four unit house that was up for sale last season and never disclosed when I rented it for a month. Weekend showings, not my idea of a vacation. The other three units are year round tenant's, one had an aggressive boxer. I brought along two little dogs and was NOT told about this until I arrived and was confronted by the dog's owner. Nice way to start a vacation. The apartment itself was very nice, but we usually rent a house to enjoy the outside as well as the inside atmosphere. The yard was an overgrown mess, and the porch roof drained right over the front and back entrance when it rained or the upstairs tenant had her air conditioner on. Christian the owner was not quick to respond, and when he did made up excuses. Their handyman eventually came but he let me know yard care was not part of the arrangement. The garbage cans didn't even have lids, and with four units it reeked by garbage day. I eventually rigged lids and used lots of lysol. I can't blame the hurricane evacuation on the owner, but let's just say it was a fitting ending. This was the first time we rented in Ocean Grove and there are a few things you should consider. Most of the houses are multi-storied which adds to the congestion of people and makes parking that much more difficult. There are also a number of what I believe are half way houses and group homes. On this street vans were constantly coming and going picking people up. Guys hanging out on the porch smoking all day was a bit uncomfortable for my daughter when she was walking the dogs and they were saying things to her. Prior to this we had always rented in Bradley Beach and will return there this summer. I usually have a house no later then Feb., but family circumstances delayed us last year and it was slim pickings.

Owner response:Let me clarify some items Marianne (our monthly tenant from last August) has misstated, and also react to some feedback clearly borne from her personal perception. Most importantly, I cannot accept the word 'deceit' as our listing clearly states that we're renting out the first floor apartment of a four floor house. I also do not accept being slow to respond to issues, as I pride myself to being a very good landlord, which four years of summer tenants and year-round tenants will be able to attest to. I was on numerous phone calls with Marianne, addressing all her concerns. My handyman brought our front yard up to Marianne's standards (even though there was really nothing wrong with it), and my realtor engaged in peace negotiations between Marianne's dogs and our second floor tenant's dog (since then, our second floor tenant has moved away). Marianne's issues with cleanliness and safety in Ocean Grove are simply her perceptions which she has every right to. We pride ourselves in having a great house, rent to good people, in a great town. There are absolutely no safety issues in Ocean Grove (google 'Ocean Grove Crime Statistics' to confirm). Most houses being Victorian with front-porches only adds to the charm of this town.
