This home is an unique brick building , built by the US army in 1905, as part of Fort Leavitt, and served as the Jail. It was converted into a home in 1970, and some of the original "cells" retained. It now has over 4000 square feet of living space, soaring ceilings covered by the original embossed tin ceilings and in part, the original wood floors.
The kitchen was added on, and is very large, having 2 dishwashers, 2 ovens , 2 refrigerators and 2 sinks, as well as dining for 8. The dining room table also seats 8-10. Upstairs has an additional kitchenette, as well as an additional living room.
Cushings Island is approximately 2 miles X 1 mile, has no cars, no shops , 45 private homes, 5 tennis courts and 3 beaches. One owner has a swimming pool, which is usually available for use by renters. The ocean side is a nature preserve, but includes towers and old fort buildings to explore. There are 2 docks and and many private moorings.
A private ferry makes 3-4 trips to Portland a day, taking 10 -15 minutes. This house is great for family reunions.
