La Manzanilla house description
When we built this unique house, we envisioned a tree house to complement the beautiful forest from which it rose. This house is perfect for those who are adventurous and appreciate excellent modern Mexican design, as well as an intriguing mix of luxury and rustic elegance.
The house is built from cement, stone, bamboo, and wood in a primal curl which embraces a large terraced patio in back and forms large flowing planters with cascading vegetation which maximizes ocean, mountain, and village views from every floor. This is a very unique and dramatic home, though not well suited for very young children due to open style, winding staircases, and heights.
Three stories high with a rooftop deck it rests on a hill, towering over the homes below. It is open on all sides to capture views of both the Bay of Tenacatita and the jungle forests that surround the village.
Just up from the elementary school and a short walk to the beach and town center it is conveniently located, yet nestled in a hillside.
Both bedrooms have folding glass doors to close for air conditioned comfort, although this is rarely needed due to ocean breezes. The bedroom on the top floor is calculated to give you views of the ocean and surrounding countryside from both the bed and the tub for that awe factor we all crave on vacation.Bedroom on first floor has large bathroom, walk-in closet, and private shower looking out to garden.
Main living space (living, dining, kitchen, half bath) on second floor has a palapa roof and a 'tree house' feel as it has open walls to the front and back, allowing the breezes to flow through and a strong connection with the jungle.

- Off the beaten path this laid back fishing village is surrounded by jungle and offers warm Mexican charm with dirt streets and wide vacant beaches. The beaches right in town are so clear that you can see schools of large tuna and sea horses swimming within walking distance to the shore. Town abutts a mangrove reserve with huge crocodiles that tend to congregate at the river's edge. Hills are verdant forests of vegetation which surround the village. Great for a horseback riding tour with a local ranch hand. (No tour packages here.) The presence of a sprinkling of European and North American nationals makes for great dining options in town. This town is not for the condo/all inclusive crowd. However it is nestled between two exclusive high end resorts within boating and walking distance, for easy access to luxury accommodations and activities. A testament to it's great location....moreless

Casa Bambu is an incredibly unique home with amazing views of the surrounding town, ocean, and mountains. It makes you feel at once a part of the vibrant town of La Manzanilla while also being secluded and tucked away on the hillside. We are avid birders so sitting on the roof as the sun rose while watching what seemed like thousands of birds go about their morning business was pretty spectacular. We also went on a crocodile/birding expedition in town which was incredibly interesting. The local guides were knowledgeable and proud protectors of the environment and all it has to offer in this little coastal gem by the sea. We would walk the 5 miles of beach every day and take in spectacular sunsets on the roof. Owning a rental property ourselves, it's great when you arrive and the house has everything you have at home. We looked into a lot of housing options and we're so glad we decided on this one. (And it's a steal!) We would definitely come back and recommend this property to anyone wanting to get away from it all while still being in an authentic Mexican town - one that lacks that Americanized feeling of the larger cities. This town has character and charm, great restaurants, and very friendly people.

We just returned from our stay at Casa Bambu. The house had everything we needed and was clean and comfortable. We enjoyed the open air aspect of the house and the many plants, both inside and out. However, that same open air made it a bit noisy with all the village activity. I would recommend ear plugs for a good night's sleep. The beds and bedding were the most comfortable I have experienced in my 20 years of Mexico vacationing. There were plenty of towels and beach towels. The washer & dryer allowed us to pack lighter, We enjoyed being able to plug our iPhones into the stereo system for music as we sat around the nice dining table playing cards in the evening. We loved that we had the use of the bicycles and used them everyday to go to the beach. We found that the best place to spend the day at the beach was at the Fiesta Mexicana, which is the last beach restaurant heading heading north. It was very clean and had a shower to rinse off the salt water after a swim. All in all, a very enjoyable stay.

A true paradise
A true paradise
My husband and I stayed in Casa Bambu and it was perhaps the best holiday we have ever had. The home is a truly organic design and is nestled among the trees, where in the mornings we enjoyed observing the native birds flying around us. From our bedroom we could observe the cranes and other birds fly across the mountain and over the ocean and it was just magical. I was able to stay in contact with the rest of the world if I pleased via excellent internet connection and boast of the most heavenly setting where I was sitting. The best part was that we were able to leave our car and walk or bike to the beach or market or to the many nice local eateries. I would recommend Casa Bambu to anyone who is looking for a true shangrila. We will return. .

Perfect Place to Relax
Perfect Place to Relax
I had the opportunity to spend a week at Casa Bambu with a group of friends and enjoyed every minute of it. The owner's description is accurate; the house was clean, the furnishings and appliances were in great condition, and the structure itself is beautiful and unique. A highlight of our time there was cooking fresh fish that we bought directly from a fisherman in town. The large, open kitchen area makes it easy to prepare meals while still interacting with everyone else as they enjoy cocktails in the dining area while watching the sunset over the bay. And, because the house is located on the side of a hill, the evening breeze kept us cool while ensuring that the mosquitos were never a problem. I also must mention that the town of La Manzanilla is also wonderful. There are several nice restaurants within walking distance and the nearby beaches are clean and beautiful.

About the owner: I am a professor in the US who does research in Mexico. I built this house with two close friends, and one if them is a renown architect. We designed a unique house for those that love the outdoors and rustic elegance. We do not get to spend enough time here, so we enjoy sharing the house with renters.
Why the Owner Chose La Manzanilla:
The house has a beautiful view of town and the surrounding mountains and ocean. It is close to everything so you can feel like you are part of the town, but it is also a nice retreat and good place to relax and write.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The small town of La Manzanilla is very special. It sits on a beautiful, protected bay, backed by jungle, with a long sandy beach planted with coconut trees. There is a large lagoon with crocodiles and superb birding. The local residents are very friendly and there is an abundance of fresh seafood and produce. There is also a strong art and ecological tradition, and a growing international community. Amazingly, this town is still not on most maps, but those that find this place will be charmed.
