_________

* Obuda (Old Buda) is the oldest part of Budapest situated in Buda. District 3 lies on the ruins of the huge, ancient military camp of Roman legionaries called Acquincum, the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire in continental Europe. Consequently, several amphitheatres and artifacts have been unearthed here.

Medieval Obuda used to be a suburb filled with silk refineries and boat factories, forming part of Budapest by the time of its unification in 1873. Obuda was inhabited mostly by German-speaking Swabian farmers, and, because of its village-like atmosphere, was a favorite place of the petite bourgeoisie of Pest for outings.

A
Lukacs Thermal Bath

15-minute walk or direct access with tramway #17. In the 12th century, knights of the order of Saint John engaging in curing the sick settled in the area of today's Lukacs Bath, followed by the orders of Rhodos and Malta, who built their monasteries baths as well. The bath operated through the time of the Turks but the energy of the springs were used primarily to produce gunpowder and for grinding wheat. After the reoccupation of Buda, the bath became the property of the Treasury...

B
Parliament

Budapest Parliament is the third largest parliament in the world. Today it seems too big for such a small country, but at the time of its construction Hungary formed part of the Habsburg Empire, that stretched from the Tatra Mountains to the Adriatic. Budapest Parliament represents one of the city’s many architectural masterpieces. The architect, Imre Steindl mixed medieval features with national and his own style. The result is an eclectic classic. The Parliament has 691 rooms, it is 268 m long and 123 m wide accross the centre, it occupies 18.000 square metres on the surface. The decorations needed about 40 kg 22-23 karat gold.

C
Entrance of Sziget Festival

Direct access with HEV. Sziget festival ranks among the Top Ten cream of European major festivals according to the first European Festival Awards contest held by the union of international festivals.

D

Direct access with HEV. Aquincum lies north along the Danube only a short distance from downtown. Its real history began in 106 A.D., when Emperor Trajan declared this frontier military base the capital of Rome’s Pannonia Inferior territory and some 40,000 soldiers and civilians settled here, creating a sophisticated archaic metropolis, but together with Rome - the inevitable decline of Aquincum came, as well. Only more hundred years later were discovered the ruins. Today at Aquincum visitors can see statues, paintings, coins, and a lot of very interesting ancient things within the walls where these artifacts were new sometime.

F
Kiraly Thermal Bath

Direct access with bus #86, #160, #260. The construction of this Bath was begun by Arslan, the Pasha of Buda in 1565 and was completed by his successor, Sokoli Mustafa. The Kiraly Thermal Bath had no direct hot water base, nor has it any today. The Turks built the Bath far from the springs to ensure the opportunity for bathing even in the case of an eventual siege, within the walls of the castle. Its water was supplied at that time, and is being supplied now, from the surroundings of the current Lukacs Bath. Following the reoccupation of Buda, the Bath was acquired in 1796 by the Konig family. They rebuilt it to its current form, combining the old with the new, and preserving its monumental character.

G
Rudas Turkish Bath

Direct access with bus #86. The centerpiece of the bath today, the Turkish bath, was built during the 16th century in the period of the Turkish occupation. Below the 10 m diameter dome, sustained by 8 pillars, there is an octagonal pool. The thermal bath has been visited from 1936 exclusively by men. The swimming pool, operating as a therapeutic swimming facility and with a sauna, was built in 1896.

H
Gellert Thermal Bath

Direct access with bus #86. The Gellert Thermal Bath and Hotel, known world-wide and highly favoured by foreigners, built in a secession style, opened its gates in 1918 and was expanded in 1927 by the wave-bath and in 1934 by the effervescent bath.

20-minute walk. The Music Fountain and the Water Tower are protected UNESCO sites. The island houses various sports establishments, like the Palatinus water park (the largest open-air swimming complex in Budapest), the Alfred Hajos sports pool (where the European LC Championships 1958, 2006 and 2010 took place), a tennis stadium and an athletics centre.

The main entrance and some of the pavilions are fi ne examples of Art Nouveau design. The city took over the place at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries and started an impressive development. You can find more than 2000 animals from the African savannah to the arctic area. All animals live within conditions similar to their original habitats. Extensive green patches, leafy groves, remarkable plants and fl owers make the place a refreshing asylum within a bustling city.

M
The Szechenyi Thermal Bath

The Szechenyi Bath is one of the largest spa complexes in Europe. It’s also the first thermal bath of Pest. It was built in 1913. The Bath was expanded in 1927 with a public bathing department for gentlemen and ladies and a beach site. The reconstruction of the pools of the swimming section, their equipment with water filtering and circulation devices was completed in 1999. The so-called fancy bath includes a whirling corridor, underwater effervescence production, neck shower, water beam back massage installed in the sitting banks and many other services.

St. Stephen's Basilica, Budapest

Construction on the Bazilika was completed in 1905 after over 50 years of construction. The dome collapsed in 1868, requiring the builders to start over from the ground up. Three leading architects, two of whom died before work was finished, directed the design. After its completion, St. Stephen's was considered so sturdy that important documents and artworks were stored in it during World War II bombings.
